The depravity of these people should be enough to have high media coverage -- except that the victim is a young, black woman. What is wrong with America that there is no public display of outrage? What about all of those "law and order" folks we hear about? It seems every time a young, white woman is missing, they get more coverage. Cable outlets like FOX (I don't consider them a news station) use these tragedies to further their own agendas; that is just as disgusting.

I pray this young lady gets all the help she needs to heal from this horrendous torture -- she was treated like a prisoner or war in her hometown! Based on reports thus far, I hope these perpetrators are tried in Federal Court for hate crimes in addition to all the other charges they face! Thank God she survived -- not everyone could survive something like this. Just seeing her eyes in the news report on MSNBC was haunting; how can people of common decency not respond?

I understand your feelings. It's a disturbing country that still harbors a very strong racist undercurrent that as this case shows is sometimes silent but still very deadly. I would hope (maybe they are I don't know) that Jesse Jackson and Sharpton and the NAACP will be protesting loudly on every street corner. That prosecuters decided not to charge these bastards with a hate crime, when the evidence shows that they raped and tortured her while screaming racial epithets is beyond the pale.

Don't get me wrong - What Vick did was awful and I am by no means a supporter of his. I just can't believe the amount of coverage he got for his abuse of dogs when this woman was fighting for her life in a trailer in West Virginia.

Marti, I couldn't agree with you more that there is tremendous racism underlying almost every aspect of our judicial system. The actions of those racist, ignorant, despicable rednecks in West Virginia is beyond comprehension and no decent person could ever imagine what that young woman went through.

It's also obscene beyond belief that just every horrific story about a missing, abused, or murdered child is about a pretty white girl and the Great Van Sustern's of the world do nothing but exploit them. There are sexist aspects to this too, when was the last boy you heard about in this context?

I might take some exception to the Michael Vick comparison. I truly believe that the condemnation of Vick had zero to do with him being African-American. I think if a white NFL quarterback had tortured, electrocuted and hung defenseless dogs, the outcry would have been just as loud and the punishment just as severe. I actually found some of those "kinda" defending Vick like Whoopy Goldberg, Jamie Foxx and Stephan Marbury disturbing on a number of levels but maybe that's a longer conversation and I understand there are many complexities involved.
