We will find out in about 1 month who the nominees will be. For the democrats it will be Hillary. The republicans are still wide open. I don't believe McCain or Huckabee have a chance and it will probably come down to Romney or Giuliani.

That's more than reasonable provided we factor in the realities of what a President can realistically be expected to achieve, the makeup of Congress, etc. I am very progressive personally, borderline Socialist in many respects. However I am also a political pragmatist by necessity due to the fact we have a two-party system and because of the volatile times we live in.

Accordingly, to me, it comes down to the choice between a right-wing, neo-con, Ayn Rand Conservative which all the GOP candidates are . . . . or a reasonably Liberal Democrat. It's choice, the environment, immigration, gay rights, foreign policy, education, corporate welfare, etc.

To me the choice is clear.

OK John, I will concede that I cannot say for certain what will happen. For now, as it seems likely that one of them will get into the White House let's wait and see.

Perhaps we could make a list along the lines of what you have already listed by which we can judge whether their first term has been a success or failure. Then, at the end of that first term, we shall see who will be eating who's words.

I agreee with you that Edwards is much more progressive than the other two; but for whatever reason he isn't going to get the nomination it appears.

You speculate and make assumptions about what Hillary or Obama would do as president, but you don't know that. I believe that both would be pro-environment, gay rights, a woman's right to choose, appoint much different Supreme Court justices, support alternative energy development, etc. The list goes on.

I beg to differ with you TAH.Recent history has proven that an incoming President can have a huge influence on change.We need to look no further than the shape of our country before the Bush era to where we stand now.Even after loosing the majority of both houses he still managed to pretty much have everything his way.There is no reason to believe that cannot happen again-I am also hopeful.

It would have been cheaper to educate them and pay for them to live in one community their entire life. Prison also satisfied the needs of cowards to commit some sort of violent act as a group if nothing else(democrats).

By not doing what was right and long term beneficial, New Yorkers added to their tax burden not subtracted from it. And increased the need for more lazy, corrupt cops.

John, I hope you are not challenging my intellect. I think my history of posts to this site on the whole suggest otherwise (apart from the occasional blunder).

The Democrats don't have a strong ticket. They only look good by comparison (kinda like which turd smells the least). The two leading candidates will barely change a thing. Clinton will be too determined to show that a woman can do a man's job she will not change the US foreign policy for fear of upsetting all the big bad boys in the two houses. Obama will be eaten alive by the attack dogs on the republican side and will be blocked in anything he tries to do (assuming he tries to do anything). On the main domestic issues (healthcare, immigration) they will not change a thing because they've either been bought off or are afraid of political recriminations.

The only candidate with a chance who might actually change things is Edwards, if some of his previous actions are anything to judge by. While I am hopeful, I do not rate his chances of being selected very highly.

The Democrats have a very strong ticket. Unfortunately a great majority of the American public wouldn't know a good candidate, intellect or a book for that matter if it slapped them in the face. Clinton, Obama, Edwards et al would help to change this countries direction drastically and start to salvage what little reputation we have left in the world not to mention domestically.

The GOP candidates are corrupt, evangelical, war-loving corporate bigots who would fall all over themseleves trying to follow Bush's neo-con policies, eviscerate the Constitution and divide the American people even more than they already are.

Secondly there is no war on terror. It's just a buzz-word designed to rally support for the masses. Like so many European nations before them throughout history, let's distract the masses by declaring war on somebody. The US cannot win a war against a real state, so we declare war on a word instead.

Lastly, you are safe from universal health care regardless of who gets into the White House. The insurance companies have taken care of that by putting the two leading democrat candidates highest on their contributions pay roll.

After living in NY most of my life and knowing the type of person Giuliani is he has my vote. He cut wefare by over 400,000 , he cut taxes , he turned Times Square around from drug pushers and prostitutes to a family atmosphere. At a time when tourist were down in record numbers and murders were over 2,000 a year he turned it around. When he refused to take a 12 million dollar check from a Saudi Prince after 9/11 shows integrity. His personal life is what it is. My second choice is Mitt Romney.

And Raz: Yes you'll need experience to operate. But that example doesn't really go up on this one. So far we've had al sorts of older, more experienced canditdates yes. But these are also people who have a vile hatred for the other party. A vile hatred that is very unnecessary. But not one of the candidates with the exception of obama has tried to cool down on this part.

And yes, his lack of experience can get in the way. But you could say the same thing about Kennedy. Sadly, his leadership was way too short to really determine if he could've changed Washington. But personally(and really, this is just me) i believe that if Kennedy wasn't shot he could've ended the cold war by at least a decade.

We need someone like Obama. We've had the same people in power for over 60 years. 60 years in which a new enemy has arisen. Namely that of Islamo-facsist regime's and these have people have as much of understanding of our culture as we have of theirs. NONE! Bush was very consirvative in his foreign policy and thanks to that Al-Qaida has had a huge boost in morale. Because of the conservative policy's of the Reps. candidate's that's only likely to grow. We need someone who can change Washington's Perspective and we need it now. And sometimes you need someone younger for that. Someone who do to inexperience has some fresh ideas. Yes also naiëve but hey, all president's make mistakes. Personally i see a lot of these qualities represented the best in Obama.
