Last night, Keith Olbermann and Paul Reickhoff, executive director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, joined the effort to expose Bill O’Reilly over his claim that there aren’t homeless veterans or if there are, there aren’t enough to matter. Rieckhoff revealed that it costs about $15,000 to get one homeless veteran off the streets for one year. If you take the conservative estimate that there are approximately 200,000 homeless vets in the US right now, that would add up to three billion dollars.
Three billion dollars to get our homeless veterans off the streets for one year, a year they could spend in a safe place where they can develop job skills, receive treatment for PTSD or other afflictions caused by the war, and re-integrate into a society that is ignoring them. We are spending over three billion dollars a week in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is creating hundreds of thousands of new veterans who will need assistance. OUR assistance.
Sign our letter to Bill O’Reilly asking him to apologize to the homeless veterans for his damaging, dishonest remarks. Reickhoff’s IAVA has an open letter here. To learn more about or donate to US Vets, the organization where I met the vets in FOX ATTACKS! “Non-Existent” Veterans, go here.
