I recently came across this video called, "Oye Hillary." As the title implies, this video is clearly targeting the Latino vote. With all the fuss about this new-fangled thing we're calling the *Latino vote,* some of us are sitting here wondering, "huh...how did she pull it off? How did she get more Latino votes than Obama? Is it a race thing? Or is it a female thing?" So now I sit here wondering, does Hillary have the Latina vote in the bag? And if she does, does that mean she's got the Latino (male) vote as well? Unless the Obama campaign steps it up, perhaps so.
One of the most common phrases I heard as a child was, "Valla pues." The colloquial translation is, "alright then." It was this phrase that ignited my feminist tendencies, as I would sit there and watch my mother "valla pues" my father till she was blue in the face. I never understood it and for many, many years, thought she was being taken advantage of and swore that would not be me. "Ay, mija," my mother would say. "Dejalo." - Leave it alone. No. The *American* in me refused to sit still and let things happen. I must act. I must speak up. I must show my capabilities as a woman... Oh oh...Super Tuesday results...my mother...a Latina's influence on her man...oh oh...wait, wait...hear me out. At the risk of causing a genderized-stir, let me share what I'm thinking. I remember part of my frustration with my mother being, this insistence on pretending it was my father who came up with all the great ideas. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. As far back as I can remember, my mother ran the household but always let my father believe he was the one making the decisions and she was going along with all his great ideas. Growing up, I saw this all around me. All my Tia's did it, and all the women at church did it also. My evidence is unfortunately limited to my experience only which is primarily Latino. All the women did this. They seemed content in acting like the men ran the household when everyone (including the men) knew this wasn't true. But when it came down to it, their influence on the big decisions could not and WOULD NOT be overlooked. For all the "valla pues'es" I heard as a child, I also remember knowing with 100% certainty that if my mother ever put her foot down on a topic, that was all it took to get my father to cave. She could get him to pack up the household and move if she really wanted. Cleverly, she picked her battles. So, when I saw the "Oye Hillary" video and how it's repetitive "we're gonna vote for you" targets Latinas, I wondered if that's going to insure she gets the male vote as well. While Obama supporters are coming up with more sexualized videos, or videos playing up the exoticized Latino hot-but-mindless-stereotype, Hillary's team is instead using a more feminist approach by using female intellect and influence to attract votes. Based on the Super Tuesday results of Latino votes, she might be on to something.
