As if that weren't enough, the "clean coal" movement sees Abundant American Coal as the basis of a cheap and cheerful ersatz gasoline.
Which, it turns out, is quite common in South Africa, and has been for some 50 years. Still, though, you have to wonder if these coal-based ersatz gasolines pose a serious air-pollution risk in the major South African connurbations of Cape Town, Durban and Die Rand (Pretoria/Johannesburg), not to mention the inevitable odour pecuilar to coal-derived fuels.
