Bloomberg sponsored Immigrant Heritage Week in NYC last week. There were cultural events all over the city. I saw a musical called "Liberty" that is a must see for anyone who really wants to think about the issue of immigration. It's the story of America's most famous immigrant. Take a look:

Mark - I respect your feelings on this topic, but unfortunately they're wrong and fear based. Mayor Bloomberg is absolutely correct about trade. NAFTA has created a very big mess in other countries.

"The most respected recent studies show that most Americans would notice little difference in their paychecks if illegal immigrants suddenly disappeared from the United States. That's because most Americans don't directly compete with illegal immigrants for jobs...On average, there is close to no net impact on the unemployment rate." - NPR

Any fantasies about Bloomberg being a new voice were detroyed by this interview. In a few short moments, he repeated the Chamber of Commerce, corp line on immigration.
Lie one: America is desperate for the talent of foreign workers. What America is desperate for is funding for public education that equals that of 30 years ago. Ronald Reagon started gutting such funding in the 80's and the supply siders (Democrats and Republicans alike) have continued the erosion ever since. College is simply out of the reach of too many Americans today. India, China and so many third worlders coming here today for advanced jobs give heavy subsidies for advanced education.
Lie two: They come here to fill jobs Americans are not willing to do. There are no jobs we are not willing to do...just pay us. The zenith of the middle class...the 50's and 60's... was a function of strong labor unions. Back then unions set the prevailing wage nation wide. Today Wal Mart does.
Lie three: We have, some suggest, an illegal alian problem. What we have are employers who skirt the law and hire foreign workers because they'll work for less, work in unsafe conditions, and won't flirt with unioniztion. A campaign contribution here and there and this employer is safe from prosecution.
Michael Bloomberg did not get where he is today by giving a damn about America or those who toil for a living.
