The reasons that American citizens are having a hard time trying to feed their families is factually a result of you and your partied abysmal economic policies. The need to fully implement our immigration laws is paramount to living in a civil law abiding society.
Any hardships suffered by the illegal aliens are hardships they have brought on themselves.

The operators of this plant deserve more than the slap on the wrist that they are probably going to get. They willingly enticed undocumented workers because they knew that they could exploit them. That is disgusting.

However, it also highlights the problems with illegal aliens -- most have been convicted of using fraudulent documents. The people who had their identities stolen did not deserve this, and the federal govt failed them by turning a blind eye to this for so many years.

The high # of stolen identity cases makes a lie out of the fact that these illegals are not "criminals". Using false IDs is a criminal act and they knowingly did it -- without any empathy for their victims. I have no sympathy for them and the penalty they are paying isn't high enough.

A reasonable person would empathize with their plight, but that is a very different position from agreeing to throw open the doors and allow anyone who improperly enters the country to stay.

The widening gap between the haves and havenots will only be solved when people stop fleeing and actually stay to work towards demanding free elections, equitable distribution of resources, universal education and economic opportunities. Mexico is a good example of a country that is rich in resources and has more than enough to support its peoples. It is also horrendously corrupt with a highly illiterate population. Solving the illegal migration problem means applying pressure on the Mexican government as well as supporting those who are advocating for change, which includes NOT allowing the US to be an economic safety valve for the corrupt elite of Mexico.

None taken. It's a worldwide problem caused by an ever widening gap between the have's and the have nots. When people in 3rd world countries are hungry, have no jobs, or are in despair, they flee wherever they can.

Any intelligent, reasonable person should be able to empathize with their plight. It's also beneficial to understand the angst of the people and societies on the receiving end of the flow as well.

Millions of people cross national borders illegally all over the world for all sorts of reasons, namely I would think,to escape economic hardship. This (sometimes, not always) puts immense strains on financial resources, a country's social fabric, the environment, health care and education, national security and crime.

Human nature dictates that people feel comfortable on a gut level with their own. Culture, language, etc. This exists everywhere and can be tied to the human species not just Americans. Call it evolution or what you will.

If I remember my history correctly, there've been a few conflicts over the years between the Scots, English, Irish, and Welsh. Britain struggles today with migration issues and nativism just as we do. And WNTW makes a good point--more about that here.

thats not a universal human trait. There are lots of forieners here in Edinburgh due to tourism and forien exchange students, indeed all over europe. Trust me it is welcomed over here. It seems to me more an American trait - I have traveled all over Europe as far as Isreal and have been struck by how welcoming people are. My uncle is just back from New York with not a lot good to say about the locals, guess I'll find out for myself as I am going over in July.

I don't hear much uproar against study abroad programs or post-college trips to Europe or the States. I am sensing a double standard for rich and poor migrants. People don't like outsiders--that's a universal human trait. But it seems there are only laws preventing poor outsiders from traveling outside their home countries, while the rich ones are often actively courted. I guess I'll take your position more seriously if you commit to never traveling or working abroad.

Regarding your stance on migration, I feel compelled to ask: did you, your parents, or grandparents ever migrate from their country of origin? I feel like my life has been thoroughly enriched by my ability to migrate from Utah to NYC, spending time in London, Costa Rica, Rome, and Buenos Aires along the way.

This is the result of a failed immigration policy. You end up treating an already insecure folk, like dirt. As in the U.K., the European Union has allowed 'cheap' labour to influx and cause the usual problems, undercutting of wages, resentment of the indigenous population and the only ones who don't care are government and business types. The one makes 'tax' albeit through so-called illegal sources and the other makes an even greater profit. Meanwhile the white or colloured settled peoples, who have their mortgages and huge bills to pay begin to feel threatened.
I am not in favour of mass migrations of peoples for economic reasons. It is the wrong reason to go anywhere and totally undermines society, culture, stability, family and the list is endless. Hence the inevitable breakdown of western civilization. BUT - and this is a huge BUT: this is NO WAY to treat any member of humanity. Once the 'problem' exists or has been allowed to exist, humane ways ought to be found to solve it. This is a small island and an artificially-produced intake of people cannot be accommodated just like that without creating housing, welfare, transport, and social problems, and the nature of the deception is as great here as it is in the USA, but unfortunately nothing is being done to really address the growing problems of displaced peoples encouraged by governments to leave their own countries, like the Doctors from Nigeria who are working in the U.K. to the great detriment of the Nigerian's own Health system. Now we are poaching people, enticing people, away from their natural habitats and instead of alowing them to slowly build up their own worlds, we destroy ours. The undermining of the middle and working classes is what this is all about. How is the U.K. and the U.S. going to control it's educated population if not economically (with growing indebtedness to credit card companies, Bank loans, mortgages etc., fragile job situations).
Is there a solution. Of course there is. There is always a solution, but certainly not the 'gestapo' tactics of Postville!
