John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Alexandria, VA 04/01/08
TRANSCRIPT:
HISTORY TEACHER: "Well you might want to see him in the campaign. It worked well in 2000.
...Is there a likelihood of a higher level or tone to the campaign of 2008 than we have seen recently with 2 Senators in it?..."
JOHN MCCAIN: "I think the American people want it very badly.... [Governor in prison joke] Anyway, Americans want respectful campaigns. They want more respect in the political arena. They want us to work together. In case you missed it, the approval ratings of Congress are near an all-time low. Because Americans have determined, I think accurately, that we don't really work for them anymore. But we are, we are divided so much by partisanship that we are not addressing many of the challenges that face them and their families and their future. I have pledged a respectful campaign with Senator Obama or Senator Clinton. And I respect them both."
