QUESTIONER: . . . obviously the economy's not in very good shape right now, one of the main things is our energy dependence on foreign oil. Would you consider opening up the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge to drilling? [applause] And what can be done to incent the oil companies to invest more in refineries to help in that capacity?
JOHN MCCAIN: . . . I still, I understand the attractiveness of it but I would also say to you, I would not drill in the Grand Canyon, I wouldn't drill in the Everglades and I believe that this area should be kept in pristine preservation. [applause] But! let me say also, I respect the rights of states to control what goes on off the shores of those states, along their coasts. But I think that we ought to tell the state of California and tell the state of Florida that we will drastically increase the amount of revenue that they, those states will receive if they will allow exploration out along their coasts. [applause]. I don't know if they would agree to it or not but I'd like to offer more incentives for exploitation of natural gas and oil off of our coast. And I think we could, because of the different environment we're in now, because of this incredibly pain, incredible pain that people are experiencing at the gas pump, that maybe we can work with the states and have a, a greater access to what we know are reserves of natural gas and oil . . .
