Town Hall Meeting
Portsmouth, OH 07/09/08
TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "[...] Mrs. McCain mentioned earlier how you are trying to inspire college students, young people. [...] The college Republicans has shrunk in the last couple of years because of they're not entirely confident in the changes that are going on in the Republican party. How can you creatively yet realistically address those concerns of college students my age?"
JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] A number of members of the Republican party have become dispirited. And a lot of it is directly related to the spending getting out of control [...] First thing that I need to do is to go to the venues where young people are [...] We have children aging from different between 23 and 16—Cindy and I do—so I go to them first for advice and counseling. [...] And the other thing to do, of course, to try to attract their attention, is to go on Jon Stewart, and go on Leno and Letterman and those. Not many young people [...] gets up early on Sunday morning and watch the talk shows.
"[...] We've got a lot of work to do. And that is, to use the Internet [...] effectively, which is the major way that [...] a lot of young Americans, particularly those that are considering voting, that's a venue they go to get their information, their opinions, etc. and we've got a lot of work to do. And we need young people like you, [...] we've gotta have you out there active. There's nothing that convinces young people like other young people.
"[...] I understand that this election is really all about people of your generation. That's what this election is really all about. And I believe that I can convince them [...] that [...] I can serve better their interests than my opponent."
