Denver, CO - Caleb Howe and I were headed to PUMAPAC headquarters earlier today, when we spotted several members of Westboro Baptist Church, otherwise known as the Phelps Clan. The group's motto is "God Hates Fags," and they are infamous for demonstrating at the funerals of fallen soldiers.

The group has gotten a lot of attention from the funerals. They demonstrated at Corretta Scott King's funeral, as well, and my brother, Jesse, was a counter-protester there. A key feature of their demonstrations is to assure the aggreived that the deceased have gone to hell.

Caleb and I interviewed several of the members, including Jacob Phelps, the grandson of church leader Fred Phelps. For a group that relies solely on provocation to thrive, they certainly have an aversion to it themselves.

As we were about to leave, a group of about 20 or 30 young counter-protesters descended on the scene and formed a human shield between the Phelps' and the road. A heavy police presence was soon forming a perimeter around the area. Here is the story, through my eyes, and Caleb's.
