The REAL McCain: Big Oil Fuels the Straight Talk Express

Gas prices are hitting all-time highs.  Our country is in the midst of a recession thanks in part to our crippling dependence on oil, so what's John McCain's plan?  Will he hold the corporate leaders of the energy industry accountable when he addresses them today in Houston?  Probably not, considering they are some of his biggest fund-raisers.

The Center for Responsive Politics finds that McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industry.  Many of McCain's top advisers have lobbied for big oil, which is why he now acts in their best interests, opposing environmental legislation and alternative energy plans.  And that's exactly why we want everyone to know The REAL McCain.

McCain is desperate to distance himself from President Bush.  But according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund, McCain has received millions in donations from the same oil, coal, nuclear, chemical, utility, and auto companies that helped the Bush administration create its energy plan—a plan that has raised gasoline to $4 a gallon.

Here's what you can do: Send this e-mail to ten of your friends, family members, and colleagues.  Tell them to send it on to ten people they know.  And don't forget to Digg it!  Spread the word that McCain is taking major contributions from wealthy oil executives like Bob Mosbacher, just one of the special interest leaders he'll be addressing in Houston.

Make sure everyone gets to know The REAL McCain, subscribe to Brave New Films today

Read the full transcript of the debate shown in the video here.

It's not just that McCain has taken the oil industry's money to push their agenda. We are already used to this from Bush 43 and Cheney.

Pandering to the polls regarding offshore drilling is not only foolish, it is very dangerous. Does he not remember hurricanes Katrina and Rita? (Katrina was the one that happened while celbrating his birthday with Bush 43.) According to the Houston Chronicle which "examined all oil spills reported to the National Response Center...in the week after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita", "the two storms caused at least 595 spills". "Some have even compared the total amount of oil released--estimated at 9 million gallons--to the tragedy of the Exxon Valdez". The Department of Homeland Security's estimate of spilled oil pretty much matches the 9,000,000 gallons that the Chronicle noted.

From a report done 1/22/07 for the Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service, it is reported that 542 oil pipelines were damaged by Katrina and Rita.

And from another Minerals Management Services report in 2006, 113 oil platforms that were destroyed just by Katrina are listed.

I'm not listing damages to refineries, because while the politicians are all pro-drilling, nobody has mentioned being pro-building of refineries to process the oil into gasoline. Who wants a refinery in their district? Offshore drilling is somewhat invisible. Refineries are not. In the meantime, here in Charlotte we have long gas lines 2 weeks after Ike hit.

Senator McCain surely has access to this information. Instead of pandering to the public, why not take the high road and explain the facts to voters. People obviously like the idea of a quick fix to reduce our price for gasoline. But (a) this is not a quick fix as it will take some 7 years or more before any new offshore rigs are in production, (b) even with offshore rigs bringing oil up from underground, where is it going to be refined into gasoline--we have no refineries in NC and where would you propose building them, and (c) is it really worth the potential damage to our coastline and our environment, complete with the costs of cleaning up after the potential oil spills?

The damages from Gustaw and Ike are not yet quantified. But you could not help but notice the black lines of oil on the beaches of Galveston.

I am not an environmental activist. But I am concerned about energy and want to see the development of alternative sources--air, sun, water, algae--moved forward with all due haste. Coal gasification, if it can be done cleanly, would be great for a county with huge coal reserves. Nuclear is fine when its waste is stored at Yucca Mountain, as long as the transportation of the waste does not go through Arizona.

Our automotive industry just received huge federal loans. This should go toward to rapid development of the technologies needed for hydrogen powered vehicles and bio-diesel fueld vehicles. Electric is only a short term solution because it requires increased generation of electricity, mush of which comes from firing coal.

The oil companies need to take the initiative to save their businesses. Replacement batteries, battery charges, oil from algae sales. If the oil companies don't do this, they will lose out to venture capitalists from Silicon Valley.

Senator mcCain should try to revive his campaign by taking this lead on the energy crisis. For that matter, why hasn't Senator Obama taken this lead. It's really not that difficult. We have the scientists and technologies that just have to be moved from small scale scale to full scale production.

All of you are nuts! You vote on party affiliation. You keep electing the same old people time after time. The best thing you can do is VOTE EVERYONE OUT OF OFFICE and get new blood out there that sides with the people and not with big corporations.

There is nothing that can be done about the two presidential candidates because as usual, voters nominated the wrong ones.

It won't matter who takes office. One way or the other, we all loose.
  • realitychex
I've noticed an interesting correlation between liberal commentary on these things and those on the hard right. The liberals tend to (most often) be literate, knowledgeable & able to use a spell checker. They bring up issues and details. The right tend to repeat the same old lame crap over & over as if the rest of us haven't been paying attention when it has been pointed out as an outright distorted lie repeatedly and they attack individuals and resort to juvenile name-calling. I think they infiltrate these blogs with a talking points list they must download from somewhere: Stupid Lies to Fool the Masses. Illegals are NOT getting Social Security. It's the stupid war that has helped wreck our economy and not allowed a recovery from 9-11 and the tech slowdown that resulted from the massive push in the 90s to deal with the Y2K issues and an idiot president that keeps vetoing every change the Democratic Congress, in their brief time in control, has tried to pass to change things for the better. So that's a NO CHANGE - same old thing issue.
Obama is NOT taking funds from big oil or ANY of the Washington lobbies! He is not and never has been Muslim. He is not going to raise taxes on anyone making less than a quarter million dollars a year! If you are on the top of that line, most of us have no sympathy for you. And it would take a military coup to bring in a true socialist state in this country so I don't care how many nightmares that might cause, it won't happen! Capitalism is too firmly entrenched in the core fiber of what this country is. The nightmares that the rest of us have dealt with for so long under the Bush regime will end - but not soon enough. It is going to take Obama & Biden some time to fix some of what the Neo-cons, the Military Industrial Complex and the religious extremists have done to this country over the past 40 years. Bush has just been the last straw & it is time for "a little revolution" that Thomas Jefferson said would be necessary to get this Democratic Republic back on track.

I see the polls and I wonder how many people keep buying the BS. Then I see so many great sites trying to get the truth out about the distortions and I'm hopeful again. My final hope on this is that perhaps the progressives among us just aren’t answering the phones when the pollsters are calling. We’ll give them the real answer in Nov.
  • sandra
Hey Matt, you better open your eyes and see the Nazi elephant (GOP) standing in the room. "socialism" is one of scare tactics these facists put out there to divert your attention away from their misdeeds and secrecy. They wrap it in an American flag and add a "cross" to make it look "good".....just like Hilter, just like the Ku Klux Klan. Same old thing, same old tactics but unfortunately people may not wake up in time, this time, to put a stop to it.
  • lovall
hightower or whatever your name is u r so quick to pint out the democrates of the past but what about our dumb ass president now? start naming his flaws. u people r so adamant on complaining about a aprticular party, name individuals as a whole. george bush, whose name doesnt deserve to be capatized properly is an idiot and u voted for them so flock dumb bird!
  • loveall
this is about mccain's two sided uneducated ideas.
  • pooka
Interesting video, but it would've been more useful if it'd included how much Obama's received from Big Oil and whether any of his advisors are former oil lobbyists.
  • Matt Judkin
Matt Judkin commented less than a minute ago:
    Obama will win!!!

    He is a liberals liberal!!

Obama has received "100" ratings from Americans for Democratic Action, Planned Parenthood, the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Government Workers, Citizens for Tax Justice (i.e., for raising taxes on the "rich"), Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, the National Education Association, and the National Organization for Women. He has received "F" grades from the National Taxpayers Union, the National Rifle Association, and U.S. English, a 13 rating from Citizens Against Government Waste, 7 ratings from the Club for Growth, the American Conservative Union, and the Eagle Forum, and zero ratings from the Family Research Council, the National Right to Life Committee, and Americans for Tax Reform.

When will the Democrats wake up and stop trying lie about being socialist liberals to their execution, like Obama!! not to mention Gore, Kerry, McGovern, Dukakis, etc, etc..

Keep being a liberal socialist that what America wants!!

    Obama 2008!!
  • hiselman67
yes, democrats were elected to congress and appointed in 2007. Some idiots seem to think they went in in 2006. The housing crisis was from the relaxation of mortgage rules that were set under the Republican Congress and President. The oil crisis was in effect prior to the Democratic Congress. Hmm....I was in the same tax bracket under Clinton as I am under Bush (sad all these years later), but I pay more now....I had more deductions back then woth my kids and the inyeresy on my home, so I guess we can use that as the excuse. It cracks me up that anybody can bend the tax numbers anyway you want them, but you want people to believe they are paying less today than they will be under Obama. Only if you make over 200K-single, 250k married, how hard is that to understand. It is a fact that our country is worse off today than it was 8 years ago, no one can refute that. It is amazing that during that time McCain did not stand up to the leadership, nor has he during his 22 years in the senate. He says he has, but his voting record says he supports Bush (over 95% of the time) but hey whatever, idiots will be idiots........
  • josh
wow. some of these people making comments have a more twisted view of reality than mccain.

first off, we have people like phil gramm to thank for the housing crisis, as well as the enron loophole. so before you go and point out how evil obama is, take a good look in the mirror at what the conservative christian right wing freaks have done to this country. they are the root of most of the problems in this country. they hide behind the bible, the flag, and their un-ending sea of lies.

Watching these short films and reading some comments being post amazes and amuzes me both. I will admit there is alot of material to go through. As far as the illegal alien comments go that is the simplist fix. The key word is "illegal"!!! No financial help paid by federal or state programs except deportation!! Really simple way to fix this is deport them and fine every employer $10,000 for every illegal worker for every day of employment!! That means no jobs for them and no reason to be here. Also to ensure that employers don't take the gamble of using them mandatory jail time for all C.E.O. and C.F.O. of those companies using them a saecond time.Money saved will be in the Billions annually. And unemployment will go down,so that just seems right to me. By the way the billions are from our tax dollars right? As far as McCain for president..........Well we(the majority of voters) really didn't elect Bush anyhow!! I always thought this great country should be governed by somebody looking out for the average guy not just looking out for the mega rich and filthy rich. Anyone who doesn't know how many homes he ownes, thinks middle income is around 5 million a year, doesn't see a problem with oil company 14 billoin dollar quarters and thinks they need tax breaks, and follows Bush's insanity 95% of the time is not representing me by a long
shot. I Think anyone that follows a idiot that averaged a C in college and has embarressed this great country so many times while pushing it into a recession isn't representing me!! I think anyone who sides with big oil while it rapes this country repeatedly stealing our hard earned money and now trying to destroy our coast lines while sit on thousands of unused oil leases isn't representing me!!!!
  • Greg
Great video.I am glad McCain will not require busineesses to seek alternatives. Obama has no issues he will stand on. Obama has no plan for any thing.
  • inez walsh
Who is lobbying on behalf of those of us in the northeast who use #2 oil to heat our homes....latest from my oil supplier FOUR DOLLARS AND FIFTY NINE CENTs if I prepurchas the number of gallons I estimate to keep my home warm andmy pipes from freezing???>>>Maybe 800 or so gallons.
Retired on a fixed income..$479.00 for health insurance, &7,000.00 in property taxes, .... The oil barons are getting rich on th middle class.....

John McCain is scarily narrow minded. Obama is very open-minded and that is what the US has historically been and needs to continue to be for it defines of dramatically as a nation. Vote Obama for the American way to be preserved. No more coal or oil lets go green!

    ========================================================================================================================================================================================
  • Obama is no better when it comes to taking big oil money. McCain & Obama are both financed by Big Oil, Wall Street & the Military, Medical and Pharma Industrial complexes. Either one of them will be just more of the same for America. Less Liberty, More taxes, More war, poorer healthcare, more Bank bailouts with our tax dollars. What a disgrace.
  • We Need To Win

Shame on all of you for lying to discredit a great man, a war hero, and the next Preident of the United States. Obama has no record, no experience, and no backbone or courage to run this country. Obama has not served in the military but took full advantaged of the freedom that was created with true Americans blood. He is a socialist not an American. Please, for the sake of our country and our children's future, vote for a real man....VOTE JOHN MCCAIN!!!

You don't require oil companies to invest in alternative energy because they are not your companies. When you own an oil company, please tell it to spend all you wish on doing something other than searching, drilling, refining and delivering oil. It won't take long for you to lose your company that way, but that way it will be YOUR company and therefore, yours to lose.

Why waste the money of the American people on a war that will benefit the few? Regardless whether you believe in socialist ideas, wouldn't you rather see our money being spent in our own country and benefiting our own people. This claim of terrorism is bologna! Taxing Big Oil - means taxing the everyday person... it is only passed on to the customer... Big Oil makes an 8% profit margin... lower than virtually every other industry.. drilling off the coasts now will bridge us to other alternatives... and have an immediate effect on prices since speculation in the market has driven up prices... speculation caused by stupid websites like this one!

The point is not to ruin the environment like China and Cuba.....The point is that we should let much more responsible and regulated American companies do this work rather than watching as a country with the worst human, social and environmental policies/record detroys the environment in our back yard. Congress needs to get a clue!

McCain has a meager 24% lifetime approval rating from the League of Conservation Voters (Obama's rating is 86%). McCain has missed several key votes in the Senate that would have supported renewable energy. Yet he claims to be a friend of the environment.

We need a President who is really committed to renewable energy if we are to modernize our energy policy.
John McCain is stuck in the past and is not the answer for our future.

No wonder there are so many republican trolls on this blog.
    The truth hurts them.

You guys think Obama is not in the back pocket of anyone? Why in the world would he forego the federal election funding if he didn't think he'd get more money from his own liberal special interest groups? At least McCain will protect our Constitution and country from the Marxist ideals of Obama and his extremist followers. McCain is not a very good candidate (from this conservative's perspective), but he is not even close to being as dangerous to this country as Obama. You people better do your homework!
  • Joe
I didn't think I would ever say this but McCain is so damn stupid he makes Bush look intelligent!
  • Ingrid
I can't believe people can still support McCain after this. He and his lobbyists are idiots and the people who are supporting him need a big dose of intelligence.
  • jonathan
Nunya - exactly! He's in everyone's pocket! That's why Obama is better - because he's not in debt to the corporations.
  • Nunya Biznez
really, a million dollars. So he gets over twenty million from banks, only slightly less from internet and cell phones. He gets money from pretty much every business in existence, and your pissed about a million dollars from oil companies. If that says hes in their pocket, then he is in everyones pocket. Get real.
  • This is a prime example of manufacturing consent...

Bush is saying today that he is asking Congress to allow drilling in Alaska. The timing for Bush's request is perfect--millions of Americans are having to forgo family vacations and are in financial peril because of inflated gas prices.

The financial burden Americans are feeling is real and tangible so everyone wants gas prices to fall, but the problem is a manufactured one that Republicans can run on in the election, i.e. if you vote for Democrats you'll get higher taxes and higher gas prices because it's their fault we're in an energy crisis because they are preventing oil companies from drilling.

Read Chomsky--this is another prime example of "manufacturing consent." As Kieth Obermann addressed in his special report last night, the Enron Loophole enables speculators to operate unregulated and drive up energy prices, and few weeks ago the Senate received testimonies saying that the price of oil would drop 25-50% almost overnight if the loophole was closed.

Phil Graham, a Republican Senator from my State of Texas, created this loophole. The last big manufacturing of consent concerned WMDs and led to the Iraq war. The overarching theme here is oil, and oilmen are in office
  • JFD
I imagine taking money from almost any source should not surprise anyone. I am surprised at objections to drilling off the coast or in some otherwise worthless tundra areas. We love our lifestyle, let's do what we can to continue it rather than give in to folks that fit into little cars or want to ride public transit.
  • Anon
it should be, "how can we trust any politician?"
Let's look at all of Obama's good friends, google them: Wright, Ayers, Pfleger, Rezko, Dhorn

It doesn’t work like that when a politician wants to sell his superior judgment as a key reason to elect him. So far, Obama wants us to trust his judgment despite the fact that he supposedly was ignorant of his preacher’s hate-filled sermons, directed taxpayer money to a Catholic priest who thinks America is the “greatest sin against God”, thinks William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn and their “overthrow capitalism” rhetoric is “mainstream”, and now is shocked, shocked! to find out that his fundraiser and real-estate partner was a corrupt fraud.
That shows extremely poor judgment in selecting associates. Why should we want to see that kind of judgment applied as President?

"socialism DOESN'T work, that the Free Market DOES work"

You know, if that wasn't such a pointlessly pathetic parroting of moronic propaganda, I would be forced to inform you that not only is a socialist country stomping our economy into the dirt with the willing assistance of the wealthiest American citizens and corporations, but there is no such thing as a free market in oil - and there never has been.

This fossil fool has got to go - it's time to put an end to the neo-CONs (Coal, Oil, Nuclear) to revive our country and heal our planet!
  • Bwahahaha! "ask oil companies to pursue alternative fuels." Do you realize how ridiculous this sounds? Let's try substituting some words...

"ask automobile companies to pursue mass transit"

"ask fast food industries to encourage people to cook more at home"

"ask evangelicals to invest in abortion clinics"

What makes you, or Congress for that matter, think it is in the best interest for oil companies to drop their cash crop - the foundation of their industry - to pursue an entirely different product?
  • Mrs. Big Dan
Not having regulations only works when people have integrity and care about what is best for others; best for our country. Our top corporate leaders care only about the bottom line-MONEY. They have substituted integrity for greed and our country is suffering for it. Think about it when you are filling up at the gas tank and shopping for food. The corporations who used to be the backbone and support of our country now have turned around and have become our destruction for all the world to see. It's embarressing how greedy our corporate leaders have become.
  • Caleb
Why should any private company be "required" to use its profits in any manner. To fight their hold on the american public, don't drive gas guzzling cars and switch to other types of transportation. Government intervention is never the solution, only the cause of future problems.

To all you want to defend Big Oil and McCain, you have done enough damage to this country already. If you don't want to tell corporations how to behave, then YOU pay back the money they've stolen from the American people so they get off scott free with rape like you want them to. That's not commie talk, that is American talk and yours is national socialist talk. You need to go to a country like China or Saudi Arabia where no dissent is allowed. Why don't you take a detour to Iraq and go fight for the oil your conservative leaders want to steal from Iraq for our oil companies whom you want to protect and not tell what to do. You pay for the harm being done to our people and economy by your tolerance for corporate crime foisted almost tax-free on the American people while we can't even buy gas or food. Whose side are you on anyway?

I am an Obama Supporter. That said, this is a terrible piece of video. It takes a half-second response and cuts off the rest of what McCain says.. what did he say? I have no idea.

Also, why are you advocating for forcing a company to do anything? Don't specify that the oil companies must research alternative energy- do you really want them to be running the show still in 20-30 years? Instead, give tax incentives, loans, and grants to anyone as awards for written proposals and solutions to alternative energy problems. If big oil wants in then they can snap those up. If not, that's their problem.
  • John McCain's lack of expertise and lack of inclination to lead to find solutions to the real problems that America will face -- economy, energy crisis, environment, food crisis -- prove that he is unworthy of the position of President ...

He shouldn't "require" Big Oil to do anything. That kind of commie talk thinking belongs in another country. I hate Big Oil as much as the next person, but it's not the government's place to tell companies how to spend their money.
  • Scott
This video is a joke. Anyone who thinks that applying wind-fall taxes and capital gains taxes on the oil companies will help our economic situation is delusional. A) We are oil dependent and cannot change that within a few years of massive taxing. B) The taxes imposed on corporations will be passed down to the consumer making already high oil prices higher. C) The oil companies are not taking any more profits from each gallon of gasoline than they were a decade ago. It is simple economics - the demand of oil in the world has sky rocketed. D) The government will NEVER come up with a cost friendly, environmentally friendly energy solution - EVER. The only that can happen will be the free market. We need to let oil companies reinvest their profits into exploring new energy supply options. We need to drill now (which wouldn't affect the environment at all with the technology available), build nuclear energy plants, and let the free market use its genius to find solutions that work. Congress is blocking this from happening right now.

Also, while you guys cry about how this is an injustice to the average American you forget one thing - there are MILLIONS of stockholders of the oil companies who are average Americans. A lot of these people rely on their stocks to do well. So next time you cry "Tax!", just remember everyone who is involved.
  • Chris
Anyone who's against having oil companies fund other fuel alternatives are proof that they are big oil supporters. Also it's a testament to American corporate greed. Big Oil has soo much money that the profits would rid the national deficit now.

Big oil are friends with the current GOP. we need to drill off our shores to stave off the huge oil prices.
  • travis
He shouldn't REQUIRE them to. It's not in the President's scope of power to do so. Tell me where in the Constitution (aka the Supreme Law Of The Land) it says that the President has the power to intervene in the workings of a company.

This is bad propaganda. I don't like McCain more than anyone else. I'm voting for Obama in November. But the big moment in this video is where he says, "no I would not require them to" as if that is some great evil. Big oil is screwing us all but this is still a capitalistic society and FORCING any corporation to use their profits for a specific venture is wrong. Freedom means freedom for everyone, even the assholes who are taking our money. This video stoops to a low level to make McCain look evil and that's wrong. He's got plenty of double-speak and backpedalling videos to prove he's dirty.
  • Josh Mofley
Mccain is slimey. That said, this argument is not honest.
We have a real supply-demand problem. It's a lack of foresight, and a lack of energy independence.
Drilling, making our own oil is a good solution.

Politically, I look at Obama Vs. McCain as Coke Vs. Pepsi. Both are bad for you, want to do things that will change the nation, but not for the long-term benefit. The answer is not more government interference.
The answer is smaller government! That's why I'm pro Ron Paul.
  • Justin
I would like to see proof that McCain and other Republicans are "taking money" from big oil. All i hear is talk and he said/she said that republicans are the devil and tied to oil. Wheres the proof in the pudding? So what if they have ties to big oil anyways? Everyone is out to make money. It cost more money to be president than you get being president. Gotta get the money somewhere. Whats a million dollars compared to a billion? By the way - Taxing or charge big oil more will only make our price at the pump higher. You thinks its gonna come out of their pockets?
  • b weber
what is imperative is that we get off oil. It wont last forever. We would already have an alternative except for oil company. Why do you think GE crushed up all there electric cars.
We do not have an energy shortage. This is the secret Republican energy policy at work.

If we start now, we can develop a cheap plentiful power source that will be an economic boon
the key is we need to be first. Screw the oil companies this is a national security issue

Every election cycle one hears the same old tired language about "tax and spend liberals". Unfortunately, this has probably helped turn well-meaning voters the wrong way at the voting booth. Please think about the tax and BORROW "conservatives" this year when you vote. Wouldn't it be nice to take some of those windfall profits from the oil companies and put them on the 9 trillion dollar debt our nation currently owes?
  • Steven Bromley
Maybe instead of requiring oil companies to put their profit towards alternative resources someone should create the industry themselves. We have no right to restrict the oil companies just because we don't like their prices. If you don't like it do something, and doing something doesn't mean bitch about. It means research and hard work, but no one seems to understand that.

  • Made in the USA
First of all, China is Slant Drilling our offshore reserves from international waters right now. (Billions of barrels worth!)

Getting to that oil is imperitive for the U.S. That's our resource and the only reason we haven't tapped it yet is for environmental purposes. (Thanks to the very foolish environmentalists) China couldn't care less about the environment and are incapable of dealing with a disaster like an Oil Spill. So the environmental reasoning is no longer valid.

Get that oil, get it now or it will soon be gone and we wont have even gotten paid for it.

Secondly, it would be against everything we stand for to force oil companies to spend their profits on a competing market. I can't even believe we're having this discussion. This isn't China or North Korea.
  • Gen
Grampa McShame is a total nightmare on this and every other issue. I refuse to believe that this nation would be stupid enough to elect this corrupt and clueless old bastard. If that occurs, it will be proof positive that the greedy neo-cons' effort to "dumb down America so we can stay in power" will have worked.
  • Personally I don't see why it's right to force private companies to use their profit for something specific. Forcing the oil companies to use their money to specific purposes is quite frankly very bad meddling by the government.

I wouldn't object if the government put a specific _Tax_ on oil companies, and then that the government used that tax-money to fund research - but let's be honest. It'a tax.
  • Steve
two words: weak sauce. Would McCain make a bad president - most likely. Will forcing oil companies to invest in alternative energy sources picked out by politicians in washington make gas cheaper, or produce a viable source of alternative energy - absolutely not.

First of all, I am quite tired of hearing people complain about windfall profits by the oil companies. This is almost entirely due to a deliberate debasement of the US Dollar by the Federal Reserve, encouraged by the Bush and Clinton (Yes, clinton) and most of the administrations preceding it. This is not a partisan issue, and both parties are equally guilty. They both take money from big oil, and even more from the banking sector. The eroding dollar (which in almost all cases must be used to purchase oil) is falling in value because we're overspending in every concievable area. When the dollars worth less, oil costs more dollars. So oil companies make more dollars in profit. They sell a commodity traded in dollars, and its price just went up. Stop blaming them. If you want to learn more, read this article, which is short and explains it quite nicely: mises.org

2nd, seriously, you think that forcing oil companies to invest in alternative energy would be anything less then an unmitigated disaster? Look no further then ethanol for some "great ideas" in alternative energy from our government. Government intervention isn't going to solve squat here, and I just can't wait to here the next retarded idea from Washington about what else we can try to turn into gas for our cars. Get government out of this and let the free market work. That means no more tax breaks for oil companies, that means no more foreign wars to protect oil supplies. Oil is hugely subsidized by sweetheart deals guaranteeing the Saudi Government (and others) security. Keeping troops over there and the bases humming costs a lot of money. Don't even get me started on Iraq. We've spent 600 billion or so to insure delivery of oil from iraq to the US. So enjoy paying higher taxes in exchange for cheaper gas. Big time net loss.

Bottom line - change our foreign policy and bring the vast majority of troops home overseas, then cut taxes...drastically.

Would you really care of gas cost $7 bucks a gallon if you your taxes were reduced by 80%? Stop blaming the symptoms of inflation (high commodity prices, like oil, grain, gold, etc) and focus on the real problems - federal reserve inflation and massive overspending.

I value objective truth no matter where it comes from.
to be open to openly exploring even extreme views can lead one to a more balanced and intelligent opinion. not leaning to one side or the other, but a balanced and intelligent out look on whatever subject as a whole.

    extremism,
    anger,

    greed,
    addiction....
these are all some of the things that can lead us off of a balanced view. but to not at least look at these things objectively may be even worse. kind of adds perspective to it all.

    Matt,
This is a political hit piece. It has no business going out to our Aqua Tutus member list. The hit piece uses a sound bite that is used out of context and not complete.

The oil companies are the among largest sponsors of alternate energy research right now. To ask the dumb question that they should be required to support this is pure political theater. They all started major funding of this last year. They have long led the research into solar, wind, hydrogen, biofuels and geothermal energy (started more than 30 years ago). Some people have claimed this should not be allowed because they will maintain their control of energy. Most of the oil companies are supporting major university research to the tune of many BILLIONS of dollars. No company can just throw money at problems. They have to answer to the share holders. Also for your information, The University of California is the largest individual shareholder of Chevron stock.

This is no different than telling you to pay more tax dollars to provide welfare to all of the people in under developed countries to raise thier standard of living. How would you answer that question?

    Dear matt,

Gas prices are hitting all-time highs. Our country is in the midst of a recession thanks in part to our crippling dependence on oil, so what's John McCain's plan? Will he hold </http:><http:>the corporate leaders of the energy industry accountable when he addresses them today in Houston? Probably not, considering they are some of his biggest fund-raisers.

The Center for Responsive Politics finds that </http:><http:>McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industry. Many of McCain's top advisers have lobbied for big oil, which is why he now acts in their best interests, </http:><http:>opposing environmental legislation and alternative energy plans. McCain is desperate to distance himself from President Bush. But according to the </http:><http:>Center for American Progress Action Fund, McCain has received millions in donations from the same oil, coal, nuclear, chemical, utility, and auto companies that helped the Bush administration create its energy plan-a plan that has raised gasoline to $4 a gallon.

The current occupant has acknowledged that we are ADDICTED to oil. But he fails to admit that he and Cheney are the DRUG PUSHERS who reap massive profits from it. We the sheeple have nearly poisoned ourselves and our progeny since the Oiligarchy first closed down public transit and the electric auto early in the century. We can expect no change from McBush. High gas prices are the greatest blessing we can hope for. Postponed since 1973, the adjustment will be strong medicine. But it may save us from suffocating ourselves.
  • Every day McCain has a new attack for Obama. When you don't have a platform that the public will vote for all you can do is fabricate things to attack your opponent for.
  • JN
Well, it's not too hard to figure out the truth about McCain if you have a brain. He's making money off of Bush's decision to grant legal protection to these very oil companies if they destroy wildlife while drilling in ANWR. McCain has his hand in the cookie jar. Get it??
  • youngharry
One of the things that seems to be overlooked about the manipulated price of oil, is that the Oil Companies want to drill off-shore and in Alaska. They think by artificially keeping gas prices high, it will make the American people allow them to do what has been refused them in the past.

It is well past time to demand nationalization of the Oil Companies.
  • Glen Whitney
Not clear to me this is a good place to go, given that Obama also raised $273K from Big Oil this year. Are voters really going to see a big distinction between a half and a quarter million? We should be looking for clearer distinctions, and I think there are many.
  • eriKKa
    Phillip, Mark -

I understand your frustration, but people will read what they want to read and hear what they want to hear. McCain's answer the the question during the debate was a classic example spin. He answered the question so briefly and cut right to a more broad issue our dependency on foreign oil and global warming. Most likely because of his big oil ties. We're in an energy crisis and big oil is profiting from that crisis. They should be required to look for alternative energy methods.

The entire point of the video is to expose McCain's ties to Big Oil. It does not seem the issue should be what McCain went on to say in the set up clip. If the viewer believes the clip was used inappropriately, then by all means check it out and see for yourself. It was a justified clip in a justified video. I see no problem other than McCain here. Please unite and we'll trounce this man!
  • Once again, McCain was NOT cut off!

If there is a site admin around, please edit the text above to include a link to the debate transcript so that these lazy people will stop repeating the same baseless complaint.
  • d2
yeah, but she had to point it out cuz bnv didn't finish the thought everyone had. i dislike McCain immensely but was wondering how he finished the sentence, as were others. all they had to do was voice over...and then he changed the subject ... or something so people aren't wondering what he said after that they cut him off in mid breath and mid blink.
  • phillip
All that was cut off in this video is McCain changing the subject as Erikka pointed out below. If the video had allowed McCain to continue, we'd all be asleep and confused 30 seconds in.
  • d2
yep. it was too obvious that you cut the remainder of the comment and makes the video suspect. i am an edwards turned obama supporter and this just looks bad. don't even get started on Stephonopoulos, i won't watch ABCNews anymore because he is so weak.
  • Thomas Jones
I think McCain would be a disaster, however, I agree with Charles, you have to let people finish their sentences. Also that Stephonopoulos video is so weak its embarrassing.
  • eriKKa
    No Charles, what Sen. McCain went on to do was change the subject;
    From the debate:
MR. HARWOOD: You would not require the oil industry to use its profits to help pursue alternative energy?

SEN. MCCAIN: I would not require them to. But I think that public pressure and a lot of other things, including a national security requirement that we reduce and eliminate our dependence on foreign oil -- and we stop the contamination of our atmosphere, which is -- and climate change, which is real and is taking place.
  • philip
no one is drilling off the coast of cuba, george
  • Lou
The VP's office backed away from China's drilling in the Gulf. What about the existing oil leases available for drilling offshore? McCain likes it both ways, especially the blowing of smoke to create another non-issue.
  • eriKKa
    tombro -

The oil companies are in the energy industry. They should be involved in a way to resolve the energy crisis we're in and not just be profiting from it.
  • eriKKa
    Michael -

You're right! Oil will eventually run out. Should we wait until that happens, until we're in a dire situation to respond, or should we respond now while we know what's ahead? The time to put our resources toward finding alternative solutions is now. That's not something McCain is interested in doing.
  • Michael
It'll take some time, but oil will eventually run out. Considering how fast chinas demand for oil (not to mention the rest of the world) is increasing, it'll run out fairly quick.
So what good could come from ending our dependance on oil? (apart from future generations being able to drive a car)
    1. More money for Americans. (looks like we're gonna need it)
    2. Fast growing economies like China stop buying oil from "bad countries", for example Iran.
    3. Environmentally friendly

What have we got to loose?
  • tombro
One of the main premises of this spot is that McCain wouldn't require big oil to invest in alt energy. Do we want big oil to eventually control the strings of alternative energy too?
Look what happened when the car companies got control of mass transit in Los Angeles.
    Just my 2 cents.
  • gary kaposta
Petrochemical fuels will be obsolete. With populations in China and India becoming more auto dependent, increased drilling is but a short term fix.Altrnative energy will take the world to a better , more efficient place.Environmentalist are simply being responsible about the stewardship of oue natral resources. One would wonder why that aggravates people so much and yet when trillions are spent illegally invading a foreign Country in order to control their oil, the same people don't mind wasting that money.12 billion dollars (343tons of $100 bills) has vanished in Iraq.Cheney, Halliburton, Bush,Guillotine!
  • William Merigan
I have been critical in the past about some Brave New Film clips on McCain. However, I think this one is good. Concise, one theme, nothing nasty. I also found the editing bothersome, but given the explanation that McCain himself truncated his answer, I think it is fine.

Where's the Manhattan project for alternative fuels? We don't want our beaches and atmosphere despoiled by more fossil fuels. Instead of a 10 year contract for 100 billion dollars to KBR, let's set up a Gov't bureau of Energy independence and have something valuable in 10 years.
  • Jay B.
I agree, instead of looking for more oil, let's use less and turn to wind, solar, geothermal alternatives. Along with many other promising developments, we can just can the oil. Nuclear? Sure if you want to enrich the boiler industries like we've done for oil. Not only the most costly way to go, but we'd be creating another generatin of toxic waste that has no where to go. Let's be sensible here, all I hear is politics ... are you that beholden to your party pants that you can't see the light?
  • Irene
I love the ad for its clarity, precision, and insistence on facts and not hearsay--great! But your site header contains a typo--it's FEWER jobs, not LESS jobs (less refers to uncountable things, like liquids: "less oil." You are usually so right-on, which should mean no needless errors!
  • peurbach
As an Obama supporter, I have to say that I am very disappointed with this clip. The amounts of money you list as from "Big Oil" are puny in the larger scheme of a Presidential campaign, and the way you cut off McCain's only remarks after the word "...to ..." clearly suggests malicious editing. I think you guys can do a lot better.
  • eriKKa
    Mr. Lennon and Mr. Helfreht,

Unfortunately you're speaking before you have full knowledge of the statement. Not only was Sen. McCain NOT cut off, he then took the opportunity to change the direction of the question from alternate fuel and requiring oil companies to find alternatives to more broad environmental issues. We aren't Fox News. We're going to bring you the facts...without fancy editing.

  • Trish Hooper...

If we are becoming a modern day Sodom and Ghommhorea, it is the fault of the present administration. More drilling will NOT free us from our dependence on foreign oil, or more importantly our dependence on OIL period.

McCain's connection to Big Oil will only produce a policy that benefits the oil producers from the regions of the world that are minting new terrorists daily. Get a grip!

    John McCain - NOPE
  • Walter Helfreht
I echo Mr. Michael Lennon's sentiments.

Sound-bite-itis is something that saps our national discourse on important topics. That Brave New Films would use this methodology to promote their point I find very disingenuous.
  • Trish Hooper

  • Michael Lennon
I'm a huge supporter of Moveon.org and Barack Obama however, I don't like watching a video where the director or editor cuts McCain's answer off. "I would not require them to....". What? I want to hear the answer, not a biased edit of the answer. Lets not resort to conservative/Republican tactics. We're bigger than that.
