McCain’s Mansions: The Houses That Greed Built

Most working families today do not have homes that have anywhere near 10 rooms. John McCain has 10 houses. Many working people in America have to work two and three jobs to provide for their families and pay their car loans. John McCain hops on a private jet. Is it any wonder why McCain champions a George Bush agenda of cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy, helping oil companies turn record profits, and leaving working families to fend for themselves? McCain's velvet world leaves him utterly unprepared to make the tough choices we need to restore the middle class and ensure that everyone in America has quality, affordable health insurance.

-Andy Stern, President, Service Employees International Union (SEIU)

John McCain is soaring to new heights of hypocrisy on his wife's personal jet. He flies around the country bent on duping the public into believing he's "one of them," a regular guy who can empathize with Americans facing an overwhelming economic crush. What's more, he disparages those who oppose his ridiculous policy proposals as "elitist." But who's the real elitist?

The REAL McCain is a multimillionaire who owns ten luxurious homes. The REAL McCain backs President Bush's tax cuts for big corporations. The REAL McCain empathizes only with the interests of our nation's wealthy minority, not its money-strapped majority. But far too many are buying into McCain's deceit because the corporate press won't present the whole picture, so we created this video to educate the public about the REAL McCain.

Together, you have been a force in making sure The REAL McCain videos have been seen by nearly 6.5 million people. But as Frank Rich noted in his NY Times column yesterday, 40% of Americans hear too little about McCain from the mainstream media, meaning "the public doesn't know who on earth John McCain is." That's why it's crucial you ensure this video is seen by as many as possible, and that we use each and every tool at our disposal to get the word out. Send this on to five friends and family members, and tell them to send it to five people they know. Get it to your local news outlets and blogs and networking sites like Digg. Raise hell about McCain's economic duplicity!

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney summed it up best when he said McCain "simply doesn't understand the challenges America's working families are facing because he isn't remotely affected by them." It's up to us to tell people who McCain really is, a jet-setting elitist more concerned with corporate lobbyists than hard-working Americans.

John McCain is a wealthy first-class jerk, but so is the Communist Joo Andy Stern and the Communist Mic John Sweeney. They are all evil therefore THROW THE BUMS OUT COMPLETELY, let's go back to the CONSTITUTION, ABOLISH THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM, and GO BACK TO REAL MONEY, GOLD AND SILVER COINS!

Honestly Robert, cut out the sensationalist garbage. BEING RICH IS NOT A CRIME. What are you trying to do here? If you ask me, you just want recognition and as many video views as possible. Nice profile pic - looking real sharp pal, no wonder you've got followers. Your title shouldn't be "Director/Producer/Activist" - it should be "Communist".

mccain did nothing wrong,75% of the people that lost there home had no business being in the home to begin with. owning a home is a big investment, more than likely, they did not do there homework,by asking questions on how the repayments work, yes the banker is at fault by about 30%.but deep down that person knows if they can afford it or not.i know when i bought my first house back in the early 80's interest rates were 16% and i was making 5.25 p/hr.I also had a new 4by4 truck.i was 18yrs.old. from my inexperience and excitement to own a house,i almost lost everything, but thank God the paper mill that i work at had a lot of overtime and i lived in that mill for the first few yeas 12 and 16 hours day.thinking back at it now i had no business owning a home basing my payments on overtime.
  • kathy
"75% of the people that lost there home had no business being in the home to begin with" -- why 75%, pull that number out of your behind???

"yes the banker is at fault by about 30%"---why 30%, another reach around???

"i almost lost everything, but thank God the paper mill that i work at had a lot of overtime"--- I wonder if that paper mill is still in business?

whatever...glad the voters decided to send the old man and the wacko from wasilla back home last November!

XTV--who cares what the daytime "enablers" are paid? What on earth does that have to do with John McCain? Wake up, John McCain did not accumulate his wealth, homes and plane because he was a POW, he MARRIED into it. The least he could do is to try to understand the problems of the majority of Americans who either don't own a home or only own one home. Suggesting that we take fewer vacations or take on an additional job is awfully convenient for him. My vacation is one trip a year to visit my elderly parents--is McCain suggesting I should give that up? Oh, and where do we find the second jobs when unemployment is as high as it is? John McCain is so full of it--calling Barack Obama elitist and shying away from defining "wealthy,"--he is the elitist and has no real understanding of the challenges facing most Americans. The POW bit is tired. He's an old sick man who failed in his first test, his choice of a VP. The choice is clear for thinking people--Obama is the best candidate for president.

Your site has many errors. 1) McCain has released 1,500 pages of health records. It's Obama who has not released all of his. 2) Secret Service personnel who were at the McCain Palin rallies did not hear "kill him" etc. The error started by a Pennsylvania paper's account. 3)Obama's middle name is not being emphasized by Republicans. Obama's wishes to not have it mentioned are for the most part being respected. 4) McCain is not to blame for the woman's foreclosure. 5) At least the building you show in Phoenix is not totally owned by McCain. He just owns an apartment there. People in this country are allowed to own more than one house. If that is the worst thing you have against John McCain, you need to check out BarackObamaTest.com where you can see if you really agree with the ideas of Obama.

on my god, I've never seen so much smoke as there is in this election. All he's done is pull the wool over our eyes and does nothing for us. The smooth way he talks, the way he can make us feel like alll warm and cozy. Like nothing is going to harm us, and with him in office alls oing to be right with the world. I pray daily that we the american people can see through all this smoke and the bulls**t ahd get to the truth in this election, and i pray that you all will wake-up and vote for the right man and that is "JOHN McCAIN"
  • lol
obama is going to win and he is the better one out of u two and he has got my vote

Boris, you don't seem to know too much about capitalism.

In Capitalism, the power goes to those who own the most. Period. Creating jobs? Are you serious? Construction has always been a marginal job, and the only reason its been lucrative lately was because of teh housing bubble. But its all over now, and there are 10s of thousands of workers out of work because of it.

The amount McCain pays in taxes and the number of jobs they temporarily created PALE in comparison to the power he has personally obtained by OWNING those homes. Were he to liquidate them and create a not for profit business, then maybe I would think that he knew something about job creation.

And by the way, high income bracket people pay far less in taxes than we do, on a percentage basis. Warren Buffet fulfills his social security obligation in a few seconds after midnight. He has a challenge out.. he will pay a million dollars to ANY CEO of a midsized or larger company that shows him he pays more in taxes on a percentage basis than hie personal secretary. Noone has been able to claim that prize.

Look at the big picture, mate. We're getting fleeced, and have been since 1980.
  • tsss i'm not rich but i don't care how many houses Mccain own. Did you ever wonder how much he pays in taxes on those homes?? or how many jobs he's created to maintain these homes? or the number of construction workers he employed by buying these homes??
  • Gwen
I lived in Arizona for 25 years. I used to vote "the man" rather than the party, but since Republicans have become so interested in the rich getting richer and the heck with the common man, I am vote a strictly Democratic ticket these days. No wonder McCain is spreading lies about Obama. He's one of the rich that doesn't want to be taxed at ONLY a 3% raise. What has happened to the humanity of caring for the poor gone from the Republican party?
  • Ryan M.
John McCain blows. If he didn't marry a rich girl he'd be singing another tune. He surely wouldn't of had the funds to buy all his houses and parking lots, but then again with all the kick backs from the lobbyists he might have. He'll sh@t on all of us in the middle if we let him. Damn the greedy republican party.
  • Grant
Honestly, I agree that it is irresponsible. When you buy a house, the mortgage is set, and you know how much you have to pay, and after a few years it's increased, and it keeps increasing. If you know you don't make enough money to pay basic mortgage after 4 years, then I find that incredibly irresponsible. Most people expected to buy houses they couldn't afford, then sell it when the market went up, but the market went down, and they got fucked. Sorry, your problem.
  • Laura Shaver
John McCain is an pathetic human being. Incredible hypocracy. We do not want this man in charge of our country. I think his wife would love to spend some more of the tax payers money.
  • DD
Mccain i think ur a bitch u an bush are just the same, smile in peoples faces then fuck them from the back, you just need to retire an go fuck a blow up doll, i hate racsit people like u, i wouldnt trust u with a dollar u fat fucker u lie about iraq sayin u could walk around without wearing anything as in guns a bullet proof vest ur fat ass had on one my friend, so wash your mouth out with buck shot!!!

And you all what this man to run our country and he have all these homes and people are killing their whole family and themself because they are losing job and home. Vote Obama don't want no drama

    Good Evening Dear Friend,

I didn't know where to go with this and I thought of you...you who always has a vantage point I like. I don't know how to even say this but I will as you stopped by and spoke about my book and about Bonnie...Yes, I am the Voice of Bonnie, however, politically connected as you are, I wanted to honor the spirit of someone that I love and adore. Perhaps I would not be coming out of the closet but I always seem, as I am much older, to come from, at least I try to, a good place.

I would like to honor, as I approach my 50th Centenary College Reunion this weekend, my DEAR SORIORITY SISTER: CAROL HELEN SHEPP, THE FIRST MRS. JOHN MCCAIN.

WITH ALL THIS TALK ABOUT SIX PACKS, YOUR AVERAGE JOE AND ALL THE PLOYS REGARDING PALIN PRIDE, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THAT, ONCE UPON A TIME A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, A YEAR OLDER THAN I, WAS APART OF MY LIFE FOR ONE YEAR AND I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU I AM A BETTER WOMAN FOR KNOWING THE LIKES OF "SHEPPY."

I QUOTE TO YOU FROM THE HACK: 1957

"THERE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE SUCH A COMBINATION OF WHOLESOME FUN AND SOPHISTICATION AS WE FIND IN CAROL. WHETHER SHE'S AT A BRIDGE GAME OR SWIMMING, HER CONSTANT SMILE, LOVELY HAIR, AND TWINKLING EYES, ALONG WITH HER UNCEASING "HAPPY TALK," MAKE "SHEPPY" A GAY COMPANION."

"I WARMED BOTH HANDS BEFORE THE FIRE OF LIFE."

    SHAME ON YOU JOHN MCCAIN.

    GRANGE "LADY HAIG" RUTAN
  • Bonnie
Although McCain has worked hard, he could not afford his life style were it not for divorcing his first, disabled wife and marrying wealth. No one needs or should even covet 10 homes ... regardless of their wealth or how it was achieved. There is no way such people can understand the middle class, much less the poor. Nobless oblige is not the same as understanding.
  • careerdaytrader
You Democrats are SO DUMB! This financial mess happened because millions of Americans bought HOUSES they could NOT AFFORD and then walked away stiffing the banks.

Liberal policies are what FORCED banks to lend to people with NO DOWN PAYMENTS, and people were greedy and picked houses bigger than they could afford and got ARMs which once adjusted they no longer could afford the payments.

Americans are to BLAME for the mess we are in. Those who were greedy and irresponsible.

Mc Cain tried to fix freddie and fannie mae but his bill was defeated by the Democrats.

Obama received the second highest bribes, opps I mean campaign contributions from Freddie and Fannie, over $100,000!!!!

Obama is SOOO CORRUPT! He's friends are terrorists and felons!
  • DanteLabon
Damn, after reading some of these comments, it's clear there are some greedy, hatful people in this country nowadays. Not everybody's financial situation is within their control. Thanks to Bush policies, people are losing their jobs left and right...kinda hard to pay a mortgage without a job. People do get sick ya know, and thanks to..well, you know...most people can't afford to pay out of control medical bills AND a mortgage. I know that most of you repugs like to think that everyone who has financial problems is a lazy, welfare bum trying to get their hands on you're precious money...sorry, not so for most of the people you look down you're nose on. We weren't all born with a trust fund.
  • John Taylor
GET OUT THERE AND VOTE OBAMA! McCain must be STOPPED!
  • andrew
This film fails to illustrate HOW people went into foreclosure.... Things like having your rate drastically changed for missing a payment etc...

I dont think you should begrudge McCain his wealth either. I know you're trying to draw the conclusion he's unable to empathise with non-wealthy people... but it comes off poorly when you say things like "the houses that greed built"... McCain married well... I dont think he got his wealth by being 'greedy' ;)
  • Verita'
I can't believe all the right-wing drivel I'm seeing in the comments! To you apologists for the super-wealthy -- the American "dream" is not to own multiple residences and amass a fortune on the backs of others. The American dream is that everyone is equal, and so economic extremes seem to be unAmerican. Nowhere in our constitution does it say that we absolutely must be a corportate-capitalist, greed-driven society. The U.S. Constitution established a democracy, not a capitalist state, where corporations call all the shots. It's not working, as can be seen from the recent collapse of several major investment banks. And by the way, China is also capitalist, so telling a person to move there because he or she rightly criticizes our out-of-whack system is a pat answer from people who don't value debate, discussion, and critcal thinking -- all hallmarks of a truly democratic society. And, speaking of DEBATE -- why aren't the presidential and vice-presidential candidates debating on at least a weekly basis if not more frequently? That's the only way we are really going to be able to size them up. All we hear is from the media -- read Paul Krugman's NYTimes column of Sept.15, 2008 for an excellent analysis of the issue of 'media reporting' on the candidates. I think all U.S. citizens should push for more debates, and soon, because the election is only a few weeks away.
  • Don Davis
Sen. John McCain, we want you to resign your candidacy for president of the United States.

Being the president isn’t something you get because you deserve it, whether or not you qualify for the job. Yes, you are a patriot of America and the American people will always respect you for your valor as a former American POW. Unfortunately, in nearly every other way, you do not qualify to be the president of the United States. This is not something to be ashamed of; I don’t qualify either.

However, I do have the integrity to know that it’s wrong to cheat myself into a job so important, only to harm those I would serve because of my lack of qualifications.

Sen. McCain, be an American Patriot again, and resign your candidacy for president of the United States.

    Don Davis
  • lee smith
Why only one person commentating if so many are being foreclosed?
Not a very good film, what junior high group filmed it? I'm not a Mccain fanatic but I find this site everything that is distasteful about politics. If Barry is the man he says he is, he wouldn't like it either.
  • Luke
Not much question what drives main stream media and it is certainly not a search for the truth, social responsibility or accurate reporting. This unfortunately leaves the internet which is cool in a way. But remember anyone can post anything and that doesn't make it true. I guess it is about as reliable as the main stream but is biased in all sorts of unfathomable ways. One thing I am certain of is that McCain is scary and if the GOP gets the presidency again we (the non-elite) are BIG trouble!!!
  • John
I do not resent John McCain's success. I do wonder how he can relate to someone who lives on a fixed income when he says you must make 5 million a year to be rich.

Why aren't they talking about his $550 shoes? They talked about Edwards getting a $400 haircut!

How does the evangelistic community feel about the primary income for the McCains comes from distributing alcoholic beverages? Hummmmmm.

Will he remember you after the election, or will he be like our president? I can't stand more of what we have faced for eight years!!
  • Tara
NO WAY in hell a mansion in La Jolla, CA is valued at $1M.
  • Julia
I knew McSame was wealthy but dear lord! And people think that they can relate to him and he will help the normal average working citizen? Seriously??

Look at the economy, the housing crisis and the record unemployment rate people when you are voting people and then think Bush = McCain 90% (also same tax agenda to benefit the wealthy).

    WAKE UP!!
  • Socorro Maria Pelayo
McKain is totally out of touch with normal and hard working Americans. If this election is lost again to the Repulsicans, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Gov. Palin is a distraction that the Repulsicans are using to manipulate the election in their favor. She is pro war and eager to fight the Russians and Iran. If their ticket wins this election, all you young people better get ready to be drafted. We don't have the military that can carry on all these wars without a draft.

Americans: do not be fooled into thinking that this Governor is any different from George W. Bush. Haven't we had enough wars? All the money that is going to Afghanistan and Iraq could be used for Americans in education, improving the economy, creating jobs at home.
  • antoinette
in a world of pure imagination.

    McCain+Palin=PANIC!!!
  • pajoab
He is not even real, he looks like he is deadman with two dead arms.He can't even turn his head, he has to turn his whole body. All he does is the thumbs up sign. We'll he might be ok for pushing the neucler button whith them dead arms and thumbs. He is to selfish and to old to know anything. He is too old to be a president. He can't relate to me or any one that works hard for what they want. He married that dried up, prescription drug crackhead for her money. They both need to go somewhere and get help, he needs physical therapy and she needs a weave or a better one. Two dried up rich B- - - - - -s.
  • Lorena
I think the real point here is not that Mcain is sucessful, but he tries to pass himself off as a common person. I don't think he forgot for a minute how many houses he or his wife owns. He just did't want to answer. I think that the main goal of the goverenment should be to protect Americans all Americans not just the well off and the smart ones from big business and big corporations. a lot of the people that are in foreclosure were taken advantage of and tricked into adjustable rates by mortgage brokers that promised them that their rate wouldn't go up for a long time, all they wanted was their next commission. Long gone is the time when you could look across the table at the person you are doing business with, look them in the eye and know where you stand. Too many Americans still think thats the way it is. beware to those of you who show no compassion for you fellow citizens for it is only a matter of time before you too put to much faith in the big company that you work for, invest your money with or pay your insurance premiums to.
  • Hmmm?
Only in america can you think it is ok to blame someone for making good business decisions, then expect the same people you blamed to pick up your healthcare tab. By the way, Obama is no slouch when it comes to assets.
  • Matthew Thurston
Don't take out an adjustable rate mortgage if you cant pay if the rates go up. And who cares if McCain has condos all over. He is rich and old, that is what rich old people do. And if you are in politics marrying into money is common and a good way to go. i.e. John Kerry.
  • goon

this is another awesome Mccain parody... check it out. Its hilarious...(actually it would be hilarious if the whole Mccain situation wouldn't be that sad)
  • cruiseat60
A comment posted earlier "John worked very had to get what he has" After coming back from the war, McCain cheated on his wife who had been in a very serious accident (who's medical bills were paid by Ross Perot.) When McCain met Cindy, a wealthy heiress, on a trip to Hawaii, he filed for divorce and married her and her father's money. He would not be able to afford those $500 shoes on his Senate salary or pension from the service. He is anxious to win the election so that he can continue the tax cuts to the wealthy. My husband worked hard for 38 years but because of the economy and situations, he retired with less than $900 from three pensions. His company pension had been frozen and taken over by the PBFG.Yet the heads of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac walked away from their positions (after creating a big financial mess for the government to rescue) with millions of dollars in benefits. Yes the rich sure do work hard for their money.
  • mike
And their are still people wanting to vote for this guy. he's just as bad as bush/cheney
  • It's so easy for the wealthy to say, just be responsible and work harder. The facts are, sometimes this just isn't possible.
  • George
watching the whole comedy from outside the US, I would just imidatly leave the country. both candidates spent millions on dollars just for their initial speak as official candidate. both candidates spent billions for beeing elected.

both candidates have no solutions.. just opinions, spending million of dollars for beeing elected and just play with the problems of US-people.

I don't think there will be change in the next 4 years, wheter mccain or obama is elected. you have to change the whole whitehouse, change the election-system and then you can try again to bring freedom and peace to the world.

thanx for the film, I believe that you shouldnt vote for a right-wing conservative guy who lives 20 years in the past but it doesn't matter how many houses he owns.

    cheers
    G.
  • Mark
did the same people that are counting McCain's houses ask the same of John Kerry's mansions? Kerry also married into wealth and is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, where Mccain is worth tens of millions of dollars. In either case, they are both rich. However, it is not honest to point this out of mccain if you were not pointing it out of Kerry.

In terms of Obama, he may not own seven homes, but as a millionaire living in a multi million dollar hyde park mansion, he is far from poor.

additionally, his wife owns the home, not John, so they are on the other side of the prenup. some were bought for family members, some for friends, so they do not have seven homes for the specific use of john and cindy. they are for the benefit of their friends and family. I wish that most americans were as generous as mccain.
  • ajg
These people should of read the fine print in there loan application. Give me a break we need some accountability in this country. Lets always blame the wealthy for our problems and for the fact that we are lazy and want something for nothing in this country. Be responsible for you self and stop counting on someone bailing out. You people that are in forclosure are not babys you are grown adults. Grow UP AND BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS INSTEAD OF BLAMING OTHERS FOR YOUR BAD CHOICES. I HOPE THAT WHEN I AM MCCAINS AGE I WILL OWN 11 HOUSES WOTH 10 MIL. THAT IS THE AMERICAN DREAM. TO STRIVE FOR WEALTH AND PROSPERITY. IF YOU DONT BELIEVE THIS THEN GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY AND GO LIVE IN CHINA.
  • Jamie
mmmmm....who cares how many houses he has. He worked for them. Everyone wants a hand out instead of getting out there and being responsible to earn the money that buys you what you want. Go to school and get a degree if you don't make enough money to get your dream home. (First you have to finish high school) Clean up your credit, I could go on and on. This man hasn't done anything wrong. The rich aren't rich because they are irresponsible spenders...
  • Richie
WOW...I'm dumbfounded that finacial success is an immediate disqualifier of good character and portent of immorality and corruption. Why do you think this way? You sound like a child whinning about what your friends have verses what you have. You've been tought by someone that must not have been able to achieve financial success, and therefore it's an offence to obtain it. Or maybe it's how you've justified it perversely in your own mind because of your own sortcomings. Here, you can own 10 times a 100 properties. This is America, remember? It's not a crime or sin to be financially prosperous. If you're going to disqualify a candidate, base it on their platform. I can only imagine your arguements in that realm to be just as inane as your last arguement.

Thank You for allowing me to respond
    Richie

Gosh, she never told us how her interest rate went up??? So, unless she failed on the terms of her fixed rate mortgage (which she claims to have not missed a payment) then she is one of the many American's who were completely irresponsible in purchasing and financing a home which they could not afford. Why make a many hundred thousand dollar gamble people!? You are as much the reason why we are in this mess! Just admit you made a mistake and quit blaming the politicians! Sheesh!
  • Debbie Piazza-Stevens
I really appreciate the fact that Brave New Films and Mr. Greenwald have been putting forth their videos in an effort to at least TRY to educate people as to what the TRUTH is. I pass these videos along, email them AND often post URL links for the videos when I blog. I am looking forward to seeing the next videos, and am sincerely hoping they involve two subjects at least: 1. Sara Palin (are you kidding me??!!! This appointment is just BS!!) and 2. Carol Shep McCain. Please consider a film about John McCain's handicapped first wife who was crippled in a car accident but faithfully waited for John's return from Vietnam. Only to get cheated on by her adulterer husband and then unceremoniously dumped when he found out that one of his many mistresses was an heiress, who was younger, taller, and RICH. John McCain is a vile person who has made every attempt to pull the wool over people's eyes. And the really scary part is, almost half of the country (low information voters) is actually BUYING his line of bull!!! Help, Mr. Greenwald.... we need your help!!! Thank you

At least get the stories straight.

Experienced politicians will be the demise of this country. Too many white people in this country keep picking Bush and McCain types as their leader. Everytime, they just use us to get richer while we get poorer. It's time for us to roll up our sleeves and do what's necessary for the majority of Americans, not a few rich elite. If things continue, we should march on the White House and literally take it back from the evil Big Brother.
  • Viper
And some of his own GOP colleagues say he is too hot tempered and impulsive to be Commander in Chief.
  • Viper
McCain has flip flopped more than any other candidate, I don't see how we know what he stands for. And he admitted in his own book that he wants to President because it's his ambition, nothing more. Who the F cares about flag pins? I want a sensible leader, not the one who's good at stirring blind nationalism.
  • A
I'm actually a democrat, but I'll be voting Mccain in this upcoming election. Some of the reasons can be seen on the clip below. Also, are we attacking Mccain just because he has money? At least we know what he stands for. A predictable leader who's sole interest is self-interest is much better than a leader w/o a track record, refuses to wear the American flag pin, and put his hand on his heart for the national anthem, and it's sad to know that he'll probably win.

Yes yh you are correct. Americans first. We don't need more Bush, he's been one of, if not the, worst Presidents in American history. The amount of people online who say Bush has been good and Congress approved everything he did (Not strictly true) and that means he's good is mind boggling. As is the amount of people who think McCain is a maverick.

#1 No the evil corporations do not employ me! I am a small business owner that makes well under $150K that's looking to get a bigger tax cut under Obama's economic plan. #2 I could give a flying flip if other nations come to OUR country. I'm more interested in Americans getting small business tax incentives. This is our country. We can build and invest in our own damn country. F*** China! We are going to beat the H*** out of China. My bet is in America and the American people! No Way, No How, No McCain!

The problem is the corporation have already got nice big tax breaks from Bush, and McCain wants to give them billions more, and none for the middle class.
  • Patrick
A lot of you have suggested to tax the evil corporations more. I would like to remind you that #1: the evil corporations employ you, so they can't be THAT evil, #2: a major job of the president is to make America appealing to business owners. why would a business owner come to America/stay in America, if we are going to take the hell out of them? Trust me, when you lose your job to China you will understand the need for tax breaks.
  • Viper
I think the point of the video is to show McCain is a elitist who doesn't understand the problems of regular Americans. And successful, yeah, he dumped his wife for the filthy rich one. I think the fact McCain doesn't even know how nay houses he has is more indicative of his lack of awareness of the problems that face regular Americans than that video though. It should have showed more people.
  • pucman
Hmmmmmm I don't think this video says too much bad about John McCain. Ok so he has a lot real estate, shows me he is successful and knows how to handle money. Why should that be a bad thing Sounds great to me
The woman in the video sounds like she borrowed more than she could afford and doesn't know how to handle money.
I am a Canadian so I am indifferent on who becomes President

It's a tragedy. I saw young guys at Target in what I call 'Hanoi John' Pro McCain T-Shirts. How can anybody love this man? I live in Denver, and I hope that the convention and the Obama campaign convinces the 'fence sitters' who aren't sure who to vote for! Also, I hate seeing 'Lou Snobbs', the bum! If we get McCain as our next Prez, we are so screwed. The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. Same old story, different rich Republican,... : (

And the Republicans aren't pushing their agenda?
I am soooo sick of the greed, talk about income redistribution. Who the fuck do you think did the actual WORK to produce the products and services that create wealth for these people and companies getting the huge tax breaks.

It's really cute how some ignorant people can trash this site for given true and honest facts and information about McBush, but that e-mail that their sister's boyfriend's boss's cousin's wife sent them that said that Obama is a muslim/antichrist/terrorist/anti-american blahblah-- that HAS to be the truth, right?
    F'in tards.
  • lillithmaximus
Why do they point out that McBush owns seven houses? Probably because he has no idea what "working middle class" means. I work, my husband works, and we pay taxes out the ass for a war that we want no part of. As a VA nurse, I spend every day cleaning up the after effects; ie broken young men and women who don't know what they are fighting for anymore.

    Something has to change.

People who call Obama a baby killer just love to ignore his two daughters don't they?
  • Viper
Peace is letting a woman choose for herself? I have no problem with abortions in the first 3 months, when the baby is still just a parasite, not sentient. I was pleased to see Biden had the exact same stance, he voted for banning late term abortions. And criminalizing it won't achieve anything.
  • Ann
    Peace is pro-life.
  • Viper
Let's ignore McCain's plan is to put the burden of taxes on the Middle Class and poor shall we? We should definitely give big companies Billions MORE (They've already received the benefit of Bush's tax cuts) in tax cuts, but not give the middle class and poor any. Great example of logic.
  • Patrick
THE HOUSING CRISIS IS SAD AND UNFORTUNATE, BUT MCCAIN IS CORRECT. THE OWNERS OF THOSE HOMES BIT OFF MORE THAN THEY COULD CHEW... IT'S THAT SIMPLE. WHEN YOU PURCHASE A HOME AT A VARIABLE RATE... THIS IS THE RISK YOU TAKE. YOU PORTRAY MCCAIN AS AN EVIL PERSON THAT HAS MANY HOMES. WHAT DO HIS HOMES HAVE TO DO WITH THE PROBLEMS OF OTHERS!?!? THIS IS THE CLASSIC LIBERAL ATTITUDE... SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ARE EVIL. REMEMBER, SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ALSO OWN THE BUSINESSES THAT EMPLOY YOU, AND CREATE THE CHARITIES MANY OF US BENEFIT FROM.

McCain is not war hero, he is a war criminal. A million reactinary, right-wing Republicans saying he is hero . . . doesn't make him on.

John McCain was shot down by people defending their homeland for bombing and killing women and children by the thousands in an immoral and illegal war. The fact that he was imprisoned and that his captors were angry at what he had done is not at all surprising.

I wonder how we would treat people who attacked us. Oh that's right . . . we torture them too. John McCain is a war criminal.
  • Fellow Chicagoan
Do you ever wonder why they never let McCain speak in the primaries? I know why...He's not all that intelligent. His statements are very contradictory. Yeah I said it! Millions of people were fooled to think that we were getting a candidate that was actually about something but instead they wound up with a puppet for the presidencial nomination. Why do you think that many Republicans frowned upon Him? Because to be bluntly honest, Hukabee would have brought a greater challenge to Obama. They know that if push came to shove, if we ever got attacked, we would have to wait for McCain's viagra rush to wear off or for him to grab his walker to meet death at the door. And he calls himself a war hero because he's been encamped. wow. encampment is nothing like being on that front line serving and dying for our country. Think he bartered for his life???

If you want 4 more years of war in Iraq, nothing being done about rising violence in Afghanistan, a even more highly provocative stance on Russia and Iran, corruption in Washington, tax breaks for the rich and big companies and none for the middle class and poor, no attempt at developing alternate energy and continued oil dependence, illegals being treated better than veterans, immoral spying and freedom of speech and press being restricted, vote McCain. If you want change, vote Obama.

"Better a man who came by his homes honestly than Obama who arranged a lone from an indicted felon. Wake up!!"

So if you get a home loan from someone whom is to be indicted of a crime years down the road, and not even convicted yet, you've done something wrong? May I also remind that the home loan was for Sen. Obamas ONE home. Barack's net worth is only 1.3 million, by McCains standards Sen. Obama isnt even rich.
  • Al Jones
You do your cause an injustice. You would be much better received if you got your facts straight and noted that the homes are in Cindy McCain's trust. Senator McCain does not own them! By the way, it is 8 homes - not 10. McCain has done nothing wrong here - no more than JohnKerry. Did you complain about his homes or his wealth which is many time greater than the McCains. A home war is not too smart bu you dumb-o-crats. Better a man who came by his homes honestly than Obama who arranged a lone from an indicted felon. Wake up!!

Can't we just make a film about McCain that does not have the manipulative music in the background? I am a liberal, progressive, democrat, but honestly, we look no better than Fox News when we use the same manipulative techniques. And honestly, those McCain quotes stand on their own. Don't we want to convert conservatives and Republicans to our cause? I think that if somebody points out the fact that we are trying to use music to manipulate, most republicans would disregard anything further that comes off this website. I think it is time for a change.

How we can save the government MILLIONS

A president's pension currently is $191,300 per year.
Assuming the next president lives to age 80.

Sen. McCain would receive ZERO pensions as he would reach 80 at the end of two terms as president.

Sen. Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would receive $4,973,800 in pension.

Therefore it would certainly make economic sense to elect McCain in November.

How's that for non partisan thinking???

I watched the "McCain's Mansions" video. So, this lady couldn't do some simple math to figure out what her payment would be when her ARM adjusted up and then have the common sense to realize she didn't have the income to cover it. And this is McCain's fault? Maybe we should just have the government give everybody a house. Obama would do that, but he's already committed those tax dollars to a massive reparations program.

I'm not against McCain owning all of those mansions. What bothers me is his characterization of Obama as an "elitist." Sure, Obama is worth about 4 million or so dollars himself, but he's not out there trying to assassinate McCain's character. Republican McCain does not have anything to run on (although he sounds and acts a lot like Bush), so he's trying to "swiftboat" Obama just as Kerry was "swiftboated." Listen people, "Be careful what you wish for or vote for." If Gore had been elected in 2000 and Bush had lost, we probably wouldn't be paying out 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq and borrowing money from Mexico, China, and Japan to pay for it. WAKE UP PEOPLE AND VOTE FOR OBAMA! HE'S THE BEST CHOICE!

Those who vote for McCain are voting for another term of Bush, the worst President in our history. Him being elected President will lead to a even weaker economy, even MORE corruption in the White House, and war with Iran. The Iraq War has little to nothing to do with global terrorism. Afghanistan does. Barack Obama recognizes that.

My father served in WW II, my brother in vietnam, my daughter in Desert Storm, my son in law two tours in Iraq. McCain is not alone in his service. That service does not automatically entitle him to be president. • Steve
You know it's a shame that people are afraid of the truth. McCain is correct when he blamed the lenders and the individuals that bought outside their income level. Are you really that jealous that a well educated military man has made something of himself. As far as the female that said she didn't do anything wrong she paid her bills on time. YES, you did do something wrong you didn't research your loan before signing it. Think again, quit blaming the government and somebody else for your problems. You made the mistake now face up to it.

I typically agree with this website on most of McCain's nonsense but he does have a point even if it is slightly weak. On another note. One lesson is economics is that you never get an adjustable rate mortgage. Why, because you have no idea if you'll be able to make payments on it as the rate goes up and down over the next 30 YEARS! It's just dumb. When you take out an adjustable rate mortgage you should know that you're living on borrowed time/money and you only have so long before the bank hikes the price beyond your limit.
  • Kudos to Brave New Films for single-handedly causing this flap and exposing yet another in a long line of comments out of the insane geezer that proves how utterly unfit for command he is. But on to more important matters: Howzabout attacking McWarmonger on something more important --- like THE DRAFT he needs to supply the sacrificial Young Americans he needs for his "there will be other [blood-for-oil] wars" ?
  • Godslave
What shows me more than anythingj is how McFart changes with the weather. Most notably: Saying during primary season that he would not take the low road in the general election. Yet what does he do when he gets behind? He panics and starts going negative with anything he thinks might stick. He's an evil son of a bitch. I don't give a shit about his war record; my brother was there too. Another Republican I know was his cellmate in Vietnam and said earlier this year he wouldn't vote for McCain.

    McCain is an asshole.
  • kmj
What does it matter whether he has 10, 20 or 100 mansions. It's all bogus anyway.
Your real enemies in America now, and for us in Europe, are the globalist fraternity who come in various guises. Right now, 'they' realise that they cannot steal yet another American election, they realise that civil war is close, so they have set up "Rumpelstilzkin v. Black Kennedy..." and you're all falling for it! That's what I call truly sad. The English meaning here should be applied; it actually means 'pathetic'! And what is more 'sad' is that in the higher echelons of power they are mostly cowards. Realise this and it will explain a lot of 'behaviour'. They will do anything to stop you all focusing on 'them' and focusing instead on irrelevancies, like McCain & Obama!
They are well and truly pulling your chains, and you mostly seem to be falling for it. Do you all actually believe that your elections are still free and fair? And if not, what are you going to do about it? Or is that too scary-a-thought?!
Ghandi had it right and he mananged to kick the British where it hurt: in their pockets and on the International stage. Kick your power-brokers where it hurts. First find out who they are and then organise against them by being very-Pro someone else who is NOT corrupt, NOT a liar, NOT stinking wealthy rich (nothing wrong with that except in politics!) and someone with a sense of honour, like a Dennis Kucinich or a Ron Paul.
Think about this: David Rockefeller admires the Chinese social system! What does this mean to freedom-loving Americans? Is it not obvious?
They are working towards an 'Us & Them' situation on a grand scale; back to Feudalism.
If anyone out there is into hours of checking around for 'the truth', have a look at the inscriptions on THE GEORGIA STONES,(erected by the Freemasons of America, long since hijacked,) and you'll know what this is really all about...
Meanwhile check out 'blackboxvoting.org', the late-Aaron Russo's film 'America: From Freedom To Fascism', and 'kaijansen.com/PageOne.html'

Tracy...you seem to be missing the point. It's not that McCain is rich, good for him. It's that he trys to pretend that he understands the hardships of hard working American families, not to mention he's completely out of touch.Say it...BIG GAFFE! He doesn't know me(why he calls me his friend, I have no idea..I wouldn't hang out with him even if I could)He's an old, out of touch, chauvanist, creep of a man.
  • Darryl
I will also be writing in Ron Paul or if unable to write in I'll voting 3rd party as I cannot in good conscience vote for McShame or Hussain Obama.
  • Vicki
Alex, please don't throw your vote away. Vote for someone who is actually in the running (preferably Obama), and not Ron Paul just to make a statement. If you care about the future make sure your vote is in it. It really does matters -- Bush won by such a small margin against Gore. What a travesty.
  • DawnP
It should be considered an outright conflict of interest for elected officials to move into lobbying positions or allow lobbyists run for office. Too much inside information and compromising of the public's money and trust.
With the lobbyists out of the building the legislative branch might get some real work done.
Stepping out of the private sector and serving the public sector was developed by our founding fathers. The plan was to return to the private sector, not create a lifetime political seat for
    themselves...always campaigning.
  • Alex
    Hey Will,
A lot of loan officers were telling people that their homes would appreciate and they'd be able to refinance with a fixed rate when the rates changed because they'd have equity. When prices dropped, everyone went upsidedown and couldn't refinance. They tried to sell me on this mortgage too. I told them I didn't care how low my payments would be with the adjustable. I remember when my parents almost lost their home to when rates shot up in the early 90's.
  • Alex
This is one big reason I'm writing in Ron Paul. I refuse to vote McLame or be part of the Obamanation
  • Cheri
To Sue, in AZ...me, too! Jeez, maybe that was the McCain family jet flying over my house, going an hour up the road to his house in Sedona. Oh, crap! Don't we have an energy crisis!? How much fuel do you think it takes to fly around AZ? Sue, Do you have a plane? Me neither...Gosh, and that's the only way to get around AZ!How out of touch do they need to get!! Thanks, Sue...we're on the same page:) I was amused, too!
  • Cheri
Mr. Bishop...I respectfully disagree with you. What planet do you get YOUR news from? Pay attention. Even the Republicans don't like this guy...they are throwing a convention soon, and no one wants to go!The RSVP's are few and far between for this old farts party. Tell me what part you think is so wonderful about his economic policy? The part where he says he doesn't know much about economics, or the part where is tax breaks for the wealthy would get him back $300,000 at the end of the year, compared to $300 for a middle class family.Which part is marvelous?
  • Cheri
Truthfully, the guy is as old as my dad..only my Dad's more on the ball!He said the other day that the only 2 jobs his vice pres. will have if he's elected, is to cast the deciding vote in the Senate, and to check on his (McCain's) health everyday! NICE.Go pick one of your McMansions and go take a nap.

I can't BELIEVE this is who repug voters chose to represent them! It boggles the mind! As the Obama ad says, The White House is one house we DON'T want McSame moving into!!! Peace to you and yours

People don't understand that when McCain apparently "doesn't remember", as in his positions on contraception etc. and how many houses he has, it's because he doesn't want to discuss it. He realizes the truth would make him l;ook bad, and lose him votes. He doesnot even support contraception; he would have all women barefoot & pregnant again. Judging from him calling his wife a nasty word in public (rhymes with stunt) and his record of voting against woemn & childrens' issues, I think he hates women. He doesn't like us, that's for sure.
  • Mark Brady
Enough of this propaganda. Two words: "Caveat Emptor" ... let the buyer beware. It is the responsibility of the home-buyer to evaluate the loan process before buying. Most Americans don't investigate for themselves what is being told to them. Also, Study Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama. Both are no different... to heads of the same coin. They do not represent you and I...

    Peace
  • BitterPill
McCain's too old. Time for him to hang it up. Personally, I think me not voting for the man is doing him a favor. He should go enjoy his various mansions or buy a baseball team.
  • birgit
it does not matter how many homes he owns, he traded up wives..way up, filthy rich up. It is all 'her' money.
He is no more an elitist than obammalamma -
you cannot believe that? I just wish best of luck with your ideological hegemony and false L/R paradigms.
  • I will spread this around.
  • tatersalad723
It's funny how the McCain propaganda machine has Senator Obama "DESPERATELY TRYING TO GET ELECTED PRESIDENT" It seems to me the desperate one is McCain. I mean look at it logically, he's 72. Does anyone think (if he doesn't win) he'll be able to run in 2012, of course not. That's why he'll say anything, this time, to get elected because, there will be no more chances for him to run. What Senator Obama is giving us is Hope and a fresh, young minded man who is as ready as he'll ever be to take the Oath of Office. Hell, he couldn't do any worse than Bush did, that's for sure.
  • Rob
Alright. I was wrong. You were right. This DOES matter. In an earlier response post to this video, I criticized the making of this video as irrelevant. John McCain's recent response to the question "how many houses to you own?" is relevant. My apologies.

Nice work being ahead of the curve, by the way.
  • James
This guy is a joke. Even Republicans are wary of his policies. I see another 4 years of disaster if he gets elected...

None of us knows what McCain stands for (not that I care much)because he says whatever suits him at the time. Tailor made for the audience he's talking to that day.Town hall meetings packed with like minded folks that will clap like seals and hang on whatever he says...until he changes his mind the next day, with the next group of seals....and it goes on and on...No substance.
  • Agustin Batista
Shades of Michel Moore! Building a house of cards out of clippings is a fools passtime. I'm still crying . . . . . of laughter.

I'm sick of this whole election! McSame is unfit to be the President of the United States! There should be NO WAY that he should be eligible to be president! He's 72!!!! He's also full of s*&T;!!!
What will become of us? Look at the state of our country now! Will it EVER get better? I weep for the future!
  • Patrick Stoffel
I have no idea what McCain stands for. I have heard him change his stance and positions on issues so much, it is literally impossible to determine what exactly he stands for. McCain can't even remember how many houses he owns?!! Seven is the answer - he didn't know! That's not change we can believe in.
  • Sue
You are a head in the sand follower...you have GOT to know that McSane is no different than Bush when it comes to policies and action for the REAL people of this country. When Bush took office, gasoline was $1.47/gal. HIS economic policies really worked for us, eh? McCain's campaign runs SOLELY on propaganda becoz they have nothing else.
  • jack lowell
Hey, let's leave religion out of the election contest. Isn't religion supposed to be a private matter seperate from government? Let's get rid of the party that brought us Abu Ghirab and
the devastation of Iraq as a country while wasting our military babysitting some oil fields.
  • Sue
BTW, as an Arizonan (for whom McCain has done NOTHING as a Senator) I can SAFELY tell the rest of the country that there ARE other ways to get around our state than just private planes, despite what Cindy McCain says!! (hey Cindy ever hear of a car...?? we even have paved roads!!)
  • jack lowell
NBC Today show at the end of June had a spot on real estate and they were comparing houses that McCain and Obama owned. The Today show said McCain was the spartan, living in an "apartment in Phoenix." So you see the networks, even NBC are rigging the next election so the rich fat cats win again.

Down with Congress and the corruption in govt.

    Sick of Republican Rule,

I don't think Obama can "forget" how many homes he owns!! Give me a break. simply being a POW does not a GREAT American make.
  • Dwayne Brown
    McCain is a great American.
All the criticisms you mention can also be said of Obama.
At least McCain didn't go to a "church" for 20 years that told him to hate whites and the USA.
  • Viper
I hate the man, but don't underestimate his ability to use slander and manipulate the media. Another reason why Obama needs Biden as VP, Biden will be happy playing McCain's game with him.

Why yes, he is a douche, anyways putting your hard earned trust in a 'public servant' is gonna bring you dissapointment!!
Neither 'party' wants to bring about change to the common person - we live in those times. Bringing change to the many, would mean interrupting the lifestyles of the few.
The Monopolitigators will not have that!! yea, i made up that word - doesnt mean its not valid
  • Viper
After consideration, I have to agree with the people saying the video was a mistake, we don't really know all the facts with this woman so she's irrelevant, she should have been left out. Hit him where it hurts, don't give the conservatives more ammo.
  • Ray
I think people are meeting the point...
how much he has isn't relevant, but what does matter is that the lenders didn't wait for people to come and ask... they MARKETED the loans to people, convinceing them they should buy a house despite many of their doubts about being able to do it... and McCain isn't willing to do anything to them for using marketing strategy on home searchers who had little or no realestate or financial knowledge... you expect the people selling the loan to be the experts...
  • bhubble
Excuse me, how does McCain's wealth translate into that womens, (and others like her) lack of common sense when buying a home using an extremely low adjustable percentage rate, knowing the only way place that interest rate was going is UP?!
I found the presentation of the video a bit contrived, the women sitting in a darkened room, probably to convey gloom & doom, and the McCain's in bright sunshine?
I found this video contrived and pointless!! Other than pointing out the fact that there's people out there that think the rest of us are suppose to pay for their entire lack of self-responsibility!!

I think it's a disgrace! He has the NERVE to talk about irresponsibilty of people - what in the Hell does he need all those properties for??? Why doesn't he sell (or maybe Cindy won't allow) and donate the money to people who are now homeless due to this mortgage crisis! He should be banned from the USA - not a very good native son.
  • Shirley Goldberg
The number of homes McCain has is really not relevant. The Kennedys (and others) are wealthy and many of them worked for the good of the majority in this country. It is that he is either lying or at the least being disingenuous and attacking Obama and that the real McCain is not presented in the media. He was also condescending in his reply, i.e. he couldn't be bothered to answer the question which is what he does many times and gets away with it. Can't anyone figure out how to present the real McCain to the public.
  • Raymond Witham
    Where insanity rules:
We have had 8 years of insanity running the government spearheaded by George W. Bush; now the ruling party wants to replace him (he's starting to try to think for himself) with a man who is not only just as insane, he has proven himself to be senile.
  • damselfly
Come on people -- the purpose is to show the incredible hypocrisy of this man. He no more cares for the "working person" than Bush & company. And to use his POW status as some kind of shield is disgusting. Does anyone call the POWS who are homeless heros? No -- McCain has created this false persona that somehow people believe. Such crap. A hero is defined as a someone who is admired for his achievements and noble qualities -- A POW -- really?? How does that make you noble? And, what he's done since has certainly tarnished whatever he might have done then.
  • Mike Schmidt
There are so many reasons to vote for Barack Obama and so many reasons to avoid McCain. But this video is awful. The woman in it obviously couldn't afford her mortgage, so she should have bought smaller or been renting! There's no sympathy there. In this video, McCain is right! Lets hit him where he's wrong, instead. Leave it to the Republicans to throw bullshit around. They've been doing it a while and voters are sick of it.
  • Belinda
I heard Cindy McCain's sister and husband on the Warren Ballentine radio show today say they would NOT vote for John McCain, their own brother-in-law. Find out why and put them on a video.
  • CTO
This is ineffective. Not many will care that his wife has 10 mansions or that the woman featured can't pay her mortgage. McCain is living up the American Dream. What is lame is that this woman couldn't get her act together - why did she get a mortgage that she couldn't afford? I read the fine print on my mortgage documents and am not in over my head. Why should I feel bad for her?
  • sween_66
Great video. Here's a suggestion for another one: Reagan's famous line was "are you better off now than you were 4 years ago." McSame claims to be a Reagan Republican.

Are you better off now than you were 8 years ago?
gas prices, mortgage meltdown, global warming, 2 unfinished wars etc.
Why would you want 4 more years of the same?

I agree with those who say make this a national ad. Visuals, visuals, visuals. People are either too stupid or too multi-talking to respond to thoughts anymore. Give 'em visuals. How many homes!?!?!? Here's how many! POW.

Can you complain about the years he spent in a Viet Nam prison? Can you talk about Mr. Obama NOT saluting our Flag? Can you complain about Mr. Obama changing the American Flag on his aircraft to be his own version? Can you compain about the religious fanatics that he has been involved with for 20 years? Can ANYONE share exactly what his credentials are for leading this counrty? AND I do have to ask.... If YOU had the money, wouldn't you have a mansion or 2 no matter your part affiliation?

"Why everyone not see the simple facts. Obama will rasie taxes on ALL AMERICANS (by Mei Li)"

Well, Mei Li, probably because it is totally untrue, although that hasn't stopped the McCain campaign from using it as one of their talking points. Go to www.factcheck.org to see for yourself. Most of these talking points have been refuted on this nonpartisan web site designed to keep the campaign a little more honest. Or are you one of the many who are paid by the McCain campaign to add his talking points to various discussion threads as if they were your own?
  • Mitchel
Sorry guys, you really missed the target with this video. You can't blame one man for being rich and say it's his fault the woman took an ARM or possibly Interest only loan. She lost her home due to her own stupidity. Shame on you lady! BTW, who gives a shit how many houses he has or even if he can remember how many? You really think no Dems have multiple multi-million dollar homes? Please!!

This is the kind of weak propaganda that gives the right more ammo to use against us. Trash this POS video while you can.
  • Glark
Please also create a simple ad -- show his clips and then show his homes! People respond to visuals!
  • Jody Brown
I dont think McCain has to apologize for being rich. Why should he? I'm not a genius by any stretch but I am smart enough to realize not to get into a mortgage that could skyrocket to 15%. Do I feel sorry for her? yes. I really dont know what this is video is trying to prove. Maybe , dont be intelligent and make wise choices else people will resent you. Be poor, make bad decisions, be a hero!

This McCain Mansion video is great...but it needs to be cut down into a 30 second spot and played on national tv. The interview with the woman needs to hit the cutting room floor. "WHO IS THE ELITIST?" and then BAM, house #1 BAM house #2, BAM house #3, BAM house #4...
That is the heart of this video. Punch it up and shorten it and drive it home.
  • Samuel Labouisse, Jr.
Do you think we'll ever get anywhere near the story on how McCain 'played around on the side' after he returned from Vietnam--'cheating on his wife' ?! Hell no ! What makes him so 'sickening' today is all this 'piety', these 'crocodile tears' about his past behavior ! Are you kidding ?! well Jason, McCain likes to attack Obama with completely nonfactual information, so can you really blame people for looking at someone as filthy rich as McCain and believing that he would not pursue the average American's best interest. ALSO, loan companies like Freddie Mac and Fannie May are responsible for luring people into adjustable mortgages for houses they can't afford because that's where they make their money
  • MeiLi
Why everyone not see the simple facts. Obama will rasie taxes on ALL AMERICANS and will rasie Capital Gains Taxes. This will hurt everyone. All of you that will be taking money out of your 401K's should think about paying twice as much in taxes when you withdraw you funds for retirement under Obama.
  • Jason
How is it McCain's or Bush's fault that people chose to go with an adjustable mortgage. Typical liberal attitude, blame everyone else. Why don't we just elect Mrs. Gillis. Since she's struggling, it sounds like thats what you guys want. You say your not wanting to punish the wealthy. But thats all this video is. All it says is wrong with McCain is his money. I could find a lot more than that wrong with Obama. No wonder I found out about this website written on the wall of a gas station bathroom.

This website is hilarious! The suggestion of a media bias towards McCain is hysterical! I especially like the guy who says that "McCain by comparison is absurdly underqualified, out of touch with reality, and fascist" when McCain has served our country in some capacity his entire working career. And then goes on to assert that one can verify his incompetence by "searching for the words "national debt" on his website". What an idiot!

what i love abt mccain saying that it isn't the responsibility of government to bail out people who are irresponsible. who bailed out all the savings and loans in the early 1980's that mccain was almost indicted for being involved with. he was heavily involved with charles keating who went to jail for his ripoffs of his financial institutions. mccain was heavily involved with him. the real truth never did fully come out abt that whole mess that cost the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars to fix. ask mccain abt who was irresponsible back then?

15% mortgage rate? didn't these people think about refinancing when the rates were in the 6% range? I earn $3600 a month, pay $1800 in mortgage and $2000 in alimony. I had to get a second and third job to get by. But this video is rediculous.. The could have refinced, a found a financial advisor. Let's fix America and American problems before we spend BILLIONS on countries that couldn't give a crap about America.
  • Corey Simmonds
Outside of housing there's the fact that wages haven't kept up with inflation for the past decade. Right now working class Americans make less than they have at any point since 1970. Raising minimum wage helps, but that won't fully take effect until next year. Many Americans for a list of reasons too long to list are simply hurting and a lot of it has to do with things that government has an affect on. Bringing that back to McCain, I again ask how I'm supposed to believe this guy is in touch with reality when his site doesn't even mention the national debt.
  • Corey Simmonds
It's easy not to relate to people in dire straights right now when you're working for a fortune 500 company. Likewise I'm going into college and have a private safety net in the form of parents who makes well over $100,000/year but if you actually look at some of these people who's finances are taking a turn for the worst for reasons that aren't always within their control (an increasingly common situation with the current economy) you can see that there is cause for complaint.
  • Corey Simmonds
Well first off, kerosene prices have doubled since they purchased the house in around 2000, but it was more an example of the general trouble being encountered from increasing cost of living than anything, a problem that becomes amplified when you live in NH, where the cost of living is through the roof vs most of the country. They also had their income slashed when a new child necessitated one person leaving meaningful work since they can't afford day care.
  • Kevin
Corey - I agree. I was pissed off for a while because I thought the banks were just as guilty for offering the loans (without a credit check) as the buyers (who couldn't manage their budget). I think the reasoning is that the problem is so widespread that to not bail them out would have a more widespread effect on the economy and therefore, everyone.

I disagree with the argument that utilities can cause you to not pay your mortgage. The normal max mortage is 30% of one's net income. Fuel prices, despite what the media has led you to believe, have only gone up about 25% in the past year. How much energy was that household using anyway?
  • Corey Simmonds
It's also worth noting that not everybody who's in bad shape here has had their finances get our of hand because of ARMs. I know a family right now that bought a house that was well within their finances on a fixed rate loan, but now the cost of health insurance and energy (they have a house heated by kerosene, which is incredibly expensive) are draining their budget.
  • Corey Simmonds
Aside from the fact that we should have at least some compassion, even for the stupid, the simple fact is it's bad for our economy to have people and companies simply sinking en masse.
  • Corey Simmonds
Well I don't disagree that stupidity isn't something to be commended, but a question does have to be asked here. Why were these companies allowed to issue these loans to begin with? You'd be surprised how easy it is to sucker the average American, especially with the buy now, pay later mentality that is so prevalent. The government usually makes it a point to regulate credit card companies and loan companies to simply make sure this stuff doesn't happen. Why?
  • Kevin
Corey - think about it - the point is that it wasn't handed to me. Don't call it a "system". Don't call this ambiguous entity "the corporations". That allows you to be conveniently ignorant. There are hundreds of programs out there (to include the GI Bill) that are available to ANYONE. I didn't inherit anything and I worked hard to get where I'm at.

What really chaps my ass is when people (or mortgage companies that don't run credit checks)expect to get bailed out of their mistakes or expect success to come to them. It's so easy to lean back and point the finger of blame.
  • Corey Simmonds
Oh, and as for Obama being "absurdly underqualified and socialist", McCain by comparison is absurdly underqualified, out of touch with reality, and fascist. If anyone doubts McCain's lack of good policy positions then try searching for the words "national debt" on his website. They don't appear anywhere on his issue pages. We're $9.5 trillion in the hole and he doesn't think it's worth a mention?
  • Corey Simmonds
Kevin you are incredible oblivious if you think you have no one but yourself to thank for success. Who paid for the school you worked so hard in? The government. What allowed you to transition from the Army to college? The GI Bill. It wasn't your hard work, but rather a system designed to allow you to succeed that put you where you are. Now Republicans are stripping economic mobility from our society and you dare to ask how we can complain?
  • Taylor
Kevin.....you stole the words from my mouth.
  • Kevin
Most of your comments on here are typical of the lower and middle classes feeling sorry for themselves. America is a place where if you work hard, you can do whatever you want.

I grew up dirt poor, worked hard in school, joined the Army to go to college - worked hard in school again - now I have a Bachelor's and Master's Degree that I paid for. I worked hard to get a good job with a Fortune 500 company so that I can provide for my family. I don't have anyone but myself to thank and likewise I don't have anyone else to blame.

Is it the "system" keeping you down or is it that you don't want to have to work hard to succeed? So what if the wealthy are wealthy? I don't expect them to give it all up to live paycheck to paycheck. You wouldn't.

Don't blame the "system" on your problems. Nobody twists your arm to sign a cell phone contract when you don't read the terms and conditions. Nobody makes you sign a variable rate loan. Start taking ownership of your actions and quit blaming the government and "corporations" for your inability to shape your own future.

John McCain is a typical self serving gluten Republican candidate
  • Flora Goldman
At least his wife is paying for it. Obama flies all over the world and guess who is paying. US. Where oh where is FDR now that we need him?
  • Kevin
"When it started getting out of hand" . . . let's translate - "When I came to the realization that the bank was serious when they meant 'variable rate'". Home interest rates were over 20% in the late 70s/early 80s and there wasn't a housing 'crisis' back then. People today want to live above their means and don't want to hear that stupidity has a price. Either get a fixed rate loan or live in an apartment.

Don't forget, Obama is wealthy and elitist too - not to mention absurdly underqualified and socialist.
  • dean
Gotta ask - why did that couple get an ARM mortgage? Was it to get into a house that was bigger, newer, etc... rather then a house that cost less and was more affordable with a fixed rate mortgage? I can not help but wonder, why do so many people have ARM's?
  • Steve
A vote for anybody other than Obama is a wasted vote. He'll have to fix the mess the Republicans have made.

Liberals don't feel that wealth is a bad thing to be punished, quite the contrary. We just feel that if you get rich off the system you're obligated to give back to it to give others that chance. If fact, Bill Gates is a very strong advocate of this principle and he's one of the richest guys in the world.
  • Corey Simmonds
How is taxation a burden to the rich when people become rich BECAUSE of taxation? American society plays as much of a role as personal initiative in success. After all, if a "rugged individual" was dropped in Haiti with absolutely nothing and told to use their intelligence and initiative to become successful, does anyone here really think they could do it? I certainly don't.
  • Corey Simmonds
People ask how being rich means you should get taxed more, remarking as if taxation is some sort of punishment. Perhaps the means to wealth should be considered for a second. If a person who is born into a non-wealthy family becomes wealthy, how do they generally do it? They get taken by public buses to public schools on publicly maintained roads before going to public colleges paid for by low interest public loans.

It would be interesting to know how much of McCain's wealth was earned by him, and how much came as a result of dumping his first wife (the one who stuck by him when he was a POW) when she was injured in an auto accident, and marrying the wealthy blonde Cindy.
  • Marc Latimer
When asked last week at the Evangelical Caucus what McCain thought wealthy meant. His answer was someone worth 5 million dollars? What an idiot. Do we really want 4 more years of of absurd republican George W. policies? Get real.
  • Peter Walberg
McCain is successful because he aligns himself with that small minority that profit off of the looting of the middle class and the wealth that is brought to our nation because of their hard work. It is NOT "work" to collect dividends and inheritance checks. They are 2 different methods of acquiring wealth and should not be confused. And yes Darren, you CAN fix stupid - by impeaching the Bush/Cheney gang of criminals.
  • leslie
How can McCain possibly know what the middle class is feeling right now. I never went above my means, but due to the market and the company I worked for, for the last 10 years, closing, I find myself, as many others struggling to make ends meet. I live day to day and month to month, never knowing if I will be able to keep up. I wonder if McCain has ever had to choose between food or a roof over his head. Don't think so.
  • Paula Boatman
I see the American Financial disaster not a problem of McCain or Obama. It has been caused by Americans that continue to stand by and do nothing and even consider voting for more of the same ole stuff. McCain just seems to be there to rake in the profits. Wake up America. Empty out Washington; Dems and Republican alike. I think in France they called it a Revolution.
  • Keith
The elitist's will lie, cheat, and steal to keep us from joining their club - Michael Moore was a slap in their face. While much of the world helps and protects the poor and needy, we in America protect the wealthy. The average Republican continues to be duped by their wealthy pimps.

Interesting how McCain states its not the govt's job to bail out people who are irresponsible with their money. Apparently it IS the govt's job to bail out corporations who are irresponsible with theirs however. Notice he doesn't say anything about that. Unbelievable. Another soulless individual running for office.

    The NY Times Caucus Blog:

"Labor, Film Co. Paint McCain as the ‘Real Elitist’

The A.F.L.-C.I.O. and the Service Employees International Union have feuded plenty in recent years, but they have banded together to help distribute and publicize a new online video that characterizes Senator John McCain as elitist and out of touch.

The four-minute video, produced by Robert Greenwald of Brave New Films, is called “McCain’s Mansions: the Real Elitist” and showcases various McCain homes and condominiums in Arizona, California and Virginia, with one valued at $4.66 million.
  • Sandra
OK, so there's only 6 of the alledged 10 homes owned by McCain. Most Americans are trying to maintain one home and finding it difficult to meet mortgage, food, utility and insurance payments. He's not one of "us" and good for him!But a vote for McCain is not going to help the average American family, unless he plans to lease space in those 6 homes to families who lost thier homes to foreclosure.
  • Fred Poarch
Being as 66% of Large Corporations owned by the wealthy elite paid NO Federal Tax from 1998 to 2005, and the majority of poor and middle class paid for the upkeep of our nations infrastructure, military and economy I find that less than parity is applied. To make matters worse 68% of foreign companies doing business in America from 1998-2005 paid no federal tax either according to the GAO. The majority of American does not wish to have such an oppressive and unfair form of taxation on the populace. Others find it easy to use the elitist sneer, and tick feed from the economic blood life of the other economic class people. To have a President so ignorant as to not even address the issue, screams I will screw you if you vote for me. The woman in the video screwed by unethical mortgage lending companies supported by McCain doesn't care to vote for him. He has yet to support and pass any legislation that will prevent these unfair lending practices. Instead of doing so, he supports more tax breaks for those same types of corporations as well as bail out funds for them. If you don't have a strong set of moral values this may seem ok. The set running the government has such a low moral core, that Russia is beginning to take our lead and has invaded Georgia. Our government has set the bar very low in the Olympics of moral fortitude, and the elite are definitely winning the gold off the back of the lower economic strata. They call it stock investments rather than strong arm robbery. It is the elitist means to suckle from Large Corporate welfare McCain supports. No Thanks!
  • Corey Simmonds
Yeah, we've been again targeted by far right wingers spewing propaganda here but it's not like we have anything to fear from them until they actually come up with a competent argument. They've been spewing the same bs since the Reagan era and it's no more true now then it was then.
  • Corey Simmonds
The apparent discrepancy in number could be a matter of how one counts. Some of the locations at which McCain lives have multiple properties by him. For instance I think his ranch in AZ consists of 3 different properties.
  • Art
The number of homes that the McCain's own is not as important as his positions and resolve for the people that either have no home or will shortly have no home . It is the attributes that allows John McCain to "jet set" around the country and allows him to own these homes while touting "those" people will have to work harder and get a second job to keep theirs .
  • Rena Wright
Unless I can't count right, I only saw 6 "mansions" on the video. I am certainly not a McCain supporter, but before sending out these attack ads, I think it's important to be credible otherwise we won't have validity with the "other" side.
  • Jay ODell
There's text reference that McCain owns 10 homes; this video lists 6.
Are there really 10, or is this number an exaggeration?
Let's not fall into the same exaggeration trap as the opposition. There's enough truth re: McCain to make this election a success for Obama.

  • Corey Simmonds
Well you can accuse McCain of being more elitist than Obama just because he's rich. ALL politicians are rich these days, including Democrats. The difference is in how Obama and McCain treat wealth. McCain treats the fortune of all rich people in America as a right that the government can't impose upon. People like Obama on the other hand treat it as a privilege that is earned thanks to American society, and for that reason believe that the rich are obligated to give back to society to give others that chance.
  • LM BNF
This video is about how McCain is so drastically out of touch with working families that he actually is blaming them for the mortgage crisis. The point of the video is to highlight just how out of touch he is with what it means to work for a living. The fact that McCain has accused Obama of being elitist (and the traditional media has run with that absurd comment) is laughable whenit is McCain who has many homes and lives an over the top lavish lifestyle.

The fact that McCain thinks it isn’t necessary that the government help those who are facing foreclosure while he hops from one home to the other is deeply insulting and garishly insensitive. The mortgage crisis is a systemic problem and can’t be blamed on the home owners.

The problem is not that he is wealthy, it’s that he is so unaware of what the average American faces every day.
  • LongSuffrin
McCain is simply irrelevant. He is too old, unstable, out of touch. He has absolutely nothing to offer. Period.
  • Corey Simmonds
FBHO says that continuing to lower corporate taxes will create jobs. The problem with that prediction is that Clinton unemployment dropped every single year of his presidency from the whopping 7.5% that he inherited from Bush Sr down to 4% by the year 2000. Under Clinton unemployment was nearly cut in half. Then Bush came in and lowered corporate taxes and unemployment rose again. Also keep in mind that it's conservatives who opposed the infrastructure spending amendment to the 2008 stimulus package that would have created a number of public jobs.
  • adam
Lets tax the "Liberals" for social programs, and tax the "conservatives" for wars, puppet governments, and attempted regime changes.
  • Corey Simmonds
Now here we again find ourselves in a situation where government refuses to take responsibility by properly regulating and taxing the rich and corporate. The result is that working class Americans are getting the lowest pay that they've made since 1970. The result is that economic mobility is becoming virtually non-existent. The result is that corporations are setting records for corporate profits, while working class Americans suffer.
  • oceanbreeze
It may not be Obama's or McCain's responsibility to help the poor... it's all our our responsibility
  • Corey Simmonds
The rights of the everyday working person were virtually non-existent. Pay was bad, unions were forbidden, safety standards within industrial jobs were literally non-existent, and child labor laws would have been a laughable proposition all while the rich ultra-minority wanted for nothing. FBHO seems to think this is EXACTLY the state our nation should be in since it wasn't until Teddy Roosevelt and the introduction of the very government regulation of the Progressive Movement that conservatives have always been against that the Middle Class was finally born.
  • Corey Simmonds
FBHO is just another blind neo-conservative who ignores both present day reality and historical precedent. Get out of the way of business? We tried that already. It was called the Industrial Revolution. Government took a VERY hands off approach to business. The result was that the only interaction between the two took place in the form of shameful moments in like history the Credit Mobilier scandal, or Rutherford Hayes sending federal troops to shoot striking railroad workers.
  • oceanbreeze
What happened to compassion in this country?
What happened to caring for the poor and those less able to afford a college education or a better home or better opportunities for their children?
Shipping jobs overseas for cheaper labor... shameful. Profiting off other people's pain and illness (health insurance) is immoral. Shipping jobs off to the third world and leaving your country behind ought to be illegal! What's the matter with people?
  • F B H O
Bill McGlone, how will the empty suit's income/wealth redistribution help the poor? There is no incentive for those that keep doing what it is that makes them poor? I say we have a liberal tax on all Democrats to fund all the big government giveaways and to offset the high tax rate on Exxon et. al. Further, the government earns more on a gallon of gas than the company that does all of the work to produce the commodity and they didn't do a darn thing to produce it; that is what is sad about the liberal point of view.
  • F B H O
Bill McGlone, it isn't McCain's nor Obama's job to specifically address individual poor folk in this country. They both can affect the well being of those who are poor by getting out of the way of business by lowering corporate taxes and lessening regulation so that creating more jobs here in the US is affordable. If I had to pay 35-60 percent of your earnings in taxes, I would send my manufacturing overseas too.
  • F B H O
a conservatives position on the poor would be to help them change their behavior so that they can improve their economic situation. Why do liberals always demonize the successful yet it is that success they wish upon the poor?

Greed? Stop envying those who have done well in this country by calling them snake oil salesman. The true snake oil salesmen are those in the Democratic party...they offer nothing that will help anyone in this country, more so individuals being more accountable for their own lives.
  • DDBNF
Brave New Films is not trying to attack McCain for being rich, we are trying to point out that it is elitist for McCain to call Americans who are suffering from the housing crisis "irresponsible" when he himself was born into privilege and is enormously wealthy.
  • Briguy
Snake oil salesmen used to be chased out of town. People new their wares were worthless and their lauded claims bogus.
  • Briguy
Today Snake oil salesmen get markets deregulate and put others to work peddling their defective products. Then conservatives blame the unknowing or the small-time risk takers for being at fault. Regulations are put there for a reason; they protect the little guy from big time CEO snake oil salesmen and from themselves. They enforce a community value of marketing products (even loans) that don’t trap people in risky situations. When we begin to recognize greed in our society, maybe then we will clearly see the damages it ravages on the middle class.

Did the bank force her to take a variable rate mortgage? ...its poor that keep ding what it is that makes them poor, and the rich that keep doing what it is that make them successful.

The number of homes he or anyone has should not make a difference to be elected to any office.

The woman on this video looks like she can read, she appears to be intelligent so why am I supposed to feel sorry for her. Can looks be deceiving? She had to know what she was signing when she signed the pprwk for an ARM loan and so should anyone else who mde that mistake and put themselves and their families in this situation. Why blame McCain, Obama, or Mother Teresa. This is where "take responsibility for your own actions" or accountability comes into the picture.

sorry to say this, this seems to be a video about why rich people are bad. doesn't say so but this poor lady seems to have taken out an adjustable mortgage which bumps up the payments after a couple years of 100 dollars a month or whatever. i would do that too if i could afford it, buy a $500 k house for 100 per month, then flip it by the time the mortgage adjusts upward. much as i pray mccain loses and obama wins i am afraid this video seems communist, not democratic or just.

This is the real McCain...A man who thinks that to be considered rich you need at least 5 million. The man is so out of touch with the middle class. If he gets elected President it will be a reflection on the ignorance of the American electorate.

We've been given the choice between a douchebag and a turd sandwich. Either way, we're screwed. If you vote for the lesser of two evils, you're still voting for evil. Corporate welfare is bad and so is welfare for the stupid and lazy. Communism is not the answer.
  • Melissa
Why is corporate welfare acceptable (bailing out Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and various banks) but it is not ok to help real people who did not understand what they were getting into with their mortgage? A lot of people are foreclosing due to job loss, relocation, divorce, death of a spouse, etc. Don't think each person has been irresponsible. How about the gov't not regulating lenders as being irresponsible? We have been through something similar with the S&Ls.Don;'t think it will improve with McBush!

That fat woman said that "in the end our mortgage became 15%". Apparantly she got some kind of ARM mortgage where the inital payments are what you can afford and if you still are paying on the house in a few years, the rate goes up. I got a 15 yr/ 5% conventional loan that I could afford and it will never go up. WHY DID SHE DO THAT TO HERSELF AND WHY DOES SHE WANT THE TAXPAYERS TO BAIL HER OUT OF IT? She was irresposible so she wants me to pay for it. No thanks.

While I honor McCains service during the Vietnam war that bush deserted from, he is obviously unfit to hold public office, especially the presidency. His continuance of the cheney/bush catastrophe will turn the US into a 4th world country with millions starving/freezing to death and even dying of dehydration every year. Meanwhile, the very rich and the corporate elite will be watching us die as free entertainment. We will be reduced to drinking raw sewage and being charged for it. 'Nuf said.

I've always known that John McCain doesn't have my economic interests in mind. He's a champion of tax breaks for big oil and the wealthy. He was even against improving veterans benefits for our soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan. Make no mistake, McCain is an elitist.

During the Rick Warren interview, McCain said we should lower everyone's taxes by cutting out programs like 3 mil to research moose, or something like that. Military contracts to non military businesses in the Iraq theater have cost taxpayers at least $85 billion. The war is in the trillions. Please, somebody, please give me a reasonable explanation for how to cut all of our taxes and continue this war without throwing us into complete bankrupcy and eventual depression?

I disagree with the argument that McCain does not understand the challengers of working American families face of course he does but simply ignores them he does not expect to get their votes. McCain understands absolutely nothing about the economy energy policy foreign policy he just wants to be president. Is John McCain being put forward as an Aunt Sally to be knocked down by the Democrats because the Republicans know just how bad things are going to get and want the Democrats blamed for it???????
  • Thomas Clayton
I wish more people resisting the plunge into more militarism, more deficit spending, etc. would read and publicize George Lakoff's two books on the character of Republicans and those who vote for Republicans. He strongly emphasizes the Calvinistic bent in much of what passes for thinking, especially the Puritan doctrine that wealth proves approval by God, and that wealthy people are ipso facto good people. Thus, many people on the edge of foreclosure or bankruptcy approve of rich people, rather than seeing them for what they are, greedy leeches. And they'll vote for McCain, beloved of God as he is.
Thomas Frank ("What's the Matter with Kansas?" makes much the same point.

But then only 16 % of American citizens read books.
  • Lou R
How would John McCain know what economic hardship really is since his life has been one of applied privilege. His views of economics is shallow, creating an apples and oranges confused and confusing view. This came home to roost at the Saddleback Church discussion when he defines wealthy being $5M, placing greater than 97% of the American people below that level. McCain is a poor representative of any political party and a person who further diminishes the image of the once Grand Old Party.

The point is hypocrisy. McCain did not earn this money. the money comes from his bimbo barbie wife- his second wife. You may recall that McCain dumped his first wife, the wife who'd waited six years for his return from Vietnam; Johnny was, to put it politely, cohabiting with Superfund Cindy while still married. so, he's an adulterer who married for big money, money he used to start his career in politics. He's a fraud.

Illogical videos like these actually help McCain. His wife's income and home ownership practices do not refute his arguments that banks made bad loans and individuals welcomed sketchy mortgage vehicles to get into homes that were not affordable under traditional lending criteria.

Not an effective ad. I can't stand John MCCain but to nit pic about his $500 Farragama shoes is ridiculous. I'd buy them myself in a heartbeat if I had the money. You don't have to be a multimillionaire to buy expensive shoes. Stick to the issues... I cannot send this ad on to anyone who has a brain. If the ad had been an argument against the attack on Obama for being an elitist, it would have made more sense.

When Conservatives say "responsibility" that is a code word for RISK. They want to push all the risk on to individuals so the corporations have all the security. Please inform these assholes that they risked MY future as well. Look what has happened to the economy as a result. Look up the word EXTERNALITY and apply that to unscrupulous lenders. These idiots deregulated banking and this is a direct consequence. Responsibility, indeed.

My question is does Mr.McCain pay any property tax on any of his mansions? I thought that I was told that one of the "perks" of being a prisoner of war is that you are forever exempt from paying taxes - I believe just property - but can anyone confirm this?
  • Rob
I have appreciated every video that Greenwald has put out...until now. This is garbage. Is McCain the best candidate? No. But should McCain feel bad about the fact that he married a woman with a truck-load of money? Absolutely not. We should all be so lucky.

Let's stick to the election. If you want to criticize McCain's reaction to the housing crisis, that's one thing, but stick to the things that matter.

I don't care that he has money. The Kennedys had money. It's just that McCain will never give the working class an even break. He's got no clue what our struggles are like. And he doesn't care.

I am not a McCain supporter and I would never vote for him. I will vote for Obama. But I have to say, my vote doesn't depend on how much money McCain or his wife has. Think about it. To run for president of the US, you almost have to be a multimillionaire. And in the US, we have had a number of Democratic presidents who were--or whose wives were--exceptionally wealthy, such as Kennedy and Johnson. Even the Clintons, although much richer now, were not poor when he ran.

The video might be more effective if it referred to the previous banking crisis, with the savings and loan industry. What was McCain's connection to the people responsible for that mess? Did he support changes to end those abuses? Or did he give them a pass?
  • LMuseus
I won't be forwarding this video. Very poor - I agree with the above comments PLUS it needs to explain how the systems engineer (evidently educated) got into such a mortgage. Don't they read it and figure out what the worst case can be? A fixed mortgage would have been their answer. To easy for people to attack her for being stupid (I thought only the sheeple were stupid).

I won't forward this to anyone - I don't want to appear to be stupid.

Please, if we're going to be taken seriously, we ought to at least use proper grammer. The header should be changed from "less jobs" (which is meaningless) to FEWER JOBS, which is what you are trying to say.
  • Sooner or latter we are going to spread the wealth out as Isaiah 21:17-18 says. Even if it takes throwing the kings in jail as Isaiah 24:21-24 says. Then we will all have reason for that big party of Isaiah 25.

Paul says he's an Obama supporter. Not true. Paull is not an Obama supporter and he never will be, His attempt to silence us by pretending he supports Obama, is just another filthy tactic by the Republicans. Hey Paul, we're not falling for it. We are not afraid of getting the word out about the dishonesty of Your party, the Republican party. We are not afraid of losing your support, because we nevery had it to begin with. Go back to your side and keep your lies where they belong, with the republicans.

I don't like the Mansions video. It's too long and too melodramatic. The one woman who speaks does not grab me. Cut to about 30 seconds or 1 min, and I might send it on. I'm not sending this one on.

If you saw Oprah this week about Poverty in America, you now know there are communities without paved streets, running water to flush toilets, wash dishes or clean water to drink, mothers who have lost all their teeth, children with rotting teeth, depression, illness and lost jobs resulting in no place to live or very substandard places. Our politicians are always talking about the middle class, but the candidates are not looking at the "invisible" poor much at all! Those people are truly forgotten!
  • Bernie
John McCain can claim that all these properties really belong to his wife, Cindy.

    What a con man!

It's not a good idea to bring up houses or people will find out more about the crooked way Obama obtained his Chicago mansion.
  • my 2 cents
I'm a huge supporter of a lot that is being done here, but this is really a non-issue. He has a rich wife. So did John Kerry. He has 10 huge houses. He has a rich wife. Whatever they choose to with her personal money is not an issue in politics.

Stay focused on the lies and flip-flopping and the dirty politics of McCain, and your message will seem more focused and less trite.
  • Rick
    ScubaSami,

I think you are missing the point, the Kennedys might have had money, but they still would try to help the disadvantaged and poor, not just help corporations and the rich. So your point is really not valid. I also think the Kennedy's, even though they do have money, are more in touch with the average american and their plight. Its my main point about most Republicans, they are just plain selfish. They don't care about much else then themselves and their pocketbooks.

I think that this is becoming an all to familiar picture in polotics, it's always about the comparisons between classes, instead of pretending to understand how this feels, he should just hold his hand up and say "No, tell me, what are you feeling, how can I help". Instead he says "I am like you, normal", pssst, he only has the backing of oil and energy giants ¬.¬
  • jackie
This was not what I expected. You say 10 homes and list 6. Only contrasted by one person - and her story is not concise.

Perhaps you youngsters have never heard of that famous Democratic political family by the name of "Kennedy"?? Oh, permit me to correct that description..."Wealthy" aka, "Multi-millionaires" who have been very popular (decades of political service!)...yet own mucho, mucho property and holdings... Can you spell "d-o-u-b-l-e s-t-a-n-d-a-r-d-s" folks? Try and keep things in perspective without focusing on the oft-time inaccurate (or at best, incomplete) media releases. The reality in these times is that everyone who runs for or becomes president has MONEY (or direct access to it)!! You surely don't think they want the job because of it's high pay? $300K/yr is a drop in the bucket! So, do your own due dilgence in determining who best will represent YOU, take the media frenzy with a grain of salt, and VOTE instead of bellyache.
  • Paula Williams
Yes, I have to chime in with everyone else. I was hoping that this would convince my right wing sister to consider her vote carefully, since she is a small business owner and struggling right now, but this film is so weak that I would NEVER send it to her.

Too many of you don't seem to understand how seriously bad the predatory lending practices of mortgage companies were during the bush administration. Add to that the complete hands off approach of the government when it came to monitoring nearly every aspect of these business and you end up with pretty much complete deregulation of the industry.

There is a reason that companies like Countrywide are being sued for predatory lending practices. Everything from not having full disclosure, to gaming the system by using less reputable (business/law/falsefied credit checks/etc.) avenues to ensure that risky loans that should never have happened closed.

Meanwhile, these same mortgage companies were actively pressuring/lobbying the government for even more unchecked power.

Bush's "Home ownership society" coupled with complete and total "free market rules" run amok. And many of the homeowners were clearly victims of it all.

Now, with the bailouts of many of the banks behind all of these schemes, the taxpayer has joined the list of victims.

I'm an ultraliberal. but I have to agree with the other posters here - a vastly underwhelming video that offers up more questions than it answers.

Ever since Hitler came to power and led to the destruction of germany, so many have said they deserved it for being so stupid as to believe him. The destruction of our country is well under way and if the people are stupid enough to trust McCain or allow his election, what will history say about us? God Help The USA........

You didn't deliver "Ten Homes." Why would I waste time on the rest, when you failed on the first. I have concerns about McClain--mostly because he's Republican. I have concerns about Obama--mostly because he has no track record. The least of my concerns is their wealth or that they are "plain folks." I'm not looking far a buddy. I need a leader I can trust.
  • It would be insane to have McCain as Bush’s predecessor. Wake up America, the fight for supreme wealth has been on for some time. Nurturing one grain of sand called greed will soon overcome the whole body. Vote NO for McCain, unless you want a repeat of the Bush Administration.
  • This is where we liberals are hypocritical-- by not framing the issue completely.McCain is living what his republican beliefs are-- wealth is the American middleclass dream/myth that the conservatives openly value most. However, how many wealthy multi-home, private jet-setting democratic leaders and political celebs are there? Gore, Kerry, the Clintons for some easy starters. The issue of Democrats having wealth (we're supposedly all about equal access and transparancy, aren't we?)is much like Republican family values -- you know, talk the talk. Who of us is willing to question money=power? Obama? The more vital question is in what ways did any of our politicians acquire wealth? Whenever someone rolls that boulder over we see a lot of squashed worms-- regardless of politics-- and even then many working class types give applause because the wealthy demonstated the smarts to play the system. Somehow, that transcribes to leadership in our American ethos?
  • If you say 10 homes, you need to show 10. I've read that it's 8 homes and that it's 10 homes. I've looked for information, but haven't yet found more than the 6 you show. (What about those 2 in Coronado CA -- are they 2 different condos in the same building?) I want to be able to back up my attacks on McCain with addresses and other information on each one of the dwellings in question. Please don't leave your McCain housing project incomplete.
  • Camille
    Some points:

Get more examples of fraud from the banking end of the mortgage transactions. The viewers have no idea if the woman featured in the video simply made a poor purchase decision, or if she was led to believe that, for example, she had a fixed rate mortgage that turned out to be a variable rate. The more examples of financially struggling individuals you find, the greater the chance that a viewer will feel connected to the general financial turmoil we're going through here in the US.
  • Lloyd
In reply to FRich - the woman said that her take home pay is about $2,200 and her mortgage was $2,400.
  • changeamerica
It has been mentioned here that two of the homes look like they are in the same building. I read that Cindy McCain had purchased a condo in this building, but her children were always using it - so she just bought her another condo in the same building. It is what all citizens would do, if your kids are in your condo - just go buy another one - problem solved. They are just like use - Everyday Americans - they really understand our problems NOT.
  • FRich
TO clarify-it is not McCains "fortune", but rather his wife's. She is a heir to the Amh Busch (bud) family.
Also-did the women in the video claim she had taken a second job, then state her monthly take home pay was $200? Two jobs-nets $50 a weeek?
Then stated her mortgage was a whopping $400 a month at a 16+% rate. Something-no a lot-doesn't add up here.
  • alexis
That was lame and unconvincing. There is enough information about McCain to make a case to knock him over- and THAT'S WHAT YOU COME UP WITH??????
  • Laurag4321

I'd advise the news media and all voters to read and the article by the U.S. Veterans Dispatch entitled "Betrayal, deceit, corruption and John McCain, dated June 19,2008." (l) He married Cindy just one month after dumping and divorcing his crippled wife, (2) his involvement in the Keating 5 and his friend Duke Tully, and (3) Cindy McCain's drug addiction and stealing drugs from the American Voluntary Medical Team. John Edwards scandal pales compares to John McCain, who is running for President of the United States.
  • Came here all excited to see this ten mansions, instead see a few condos and some lady bitching...

Look, if you want to do this "real stories" deal you need to interview more than one person...

Second, show all ten homes if that's the title!

Third, we need to do more than focus on houses considering pretty much every person running for this post had a big home (Obama, Edwards).

This needs some work, I can see my conservative friends laughing their asses off at this.
  • Regina
Not a convincing film. First, it's "fewer jobs," not "less jobs," which people who you expect to grasp the data might recognize. (And I don't care if good grammar is "elitist.")
I agree with many here that you must show all 10 homes, in quick succession.
One person's mortgage experience isn't convincing--maybe they overreached, are financially foolish--too many justifications possible. And sorry to say, when an obese woman says they ha to decide "whether to pay the mortgage or put food on the table" that's not convincing, either.
  • linda laird
I only saw five homes in your film on McCain and two appeared to be the same building in Coronado. Are some of these rentals? Where are the other five. Three are within minutes of each other. I'm not defending the man and his terrible policies. I didn't support John Edwards because of the size of his home while he talked about the poverty of the rest of us. But Swift boating goes both ways and I want you to tell and show the truth. Don't ask me to send half truths to others.
  • Vince
What a horrible example of a struggling homeowner. You picked someone who didn't have the sense to get a fixed rate mortgage. This was the best you could do? Why should the taxpayers have to bail out people like this? The facts about McCain are indisputable, however the person you used for your example is disputable. Too bad that you couldn't have made a more effective video....
  • jeannine otchis
Perhaps Senator McCain should be forced to live for a year on just his social security and military pension. And, no perks from heiress wife Cindy. Just pay all his bills from what HE earns. Then let us see him keep buying his $520 Ferragamo loafers.
  • Ron
The video only deals with the symptom of the problem. The housing bubble was caused by the Fed in support of lenders. Now the Treasury has teamed up with the Fed to back Government lending programs with hundreds of billions more fiat currency to bail them out. This inflates the money supply and increases inflation. No candidate is talking about fixing the real problems in this country. Obama says he is against the war in Iraq but has voted time and again to fund it. Neither of the main stream Republicrats will do a thing to upset the corperate fascists.
  • Deen Warren
    Hi,
If you use the Title "Ten Homes" then show them.
It looked as if two were in the same building in Coranado. You can't fault others for being deceptive if follow the same practice....Go Obama!

I think it would be much more effective if the video showed the McCains flying around on their private jet, the companies she owns, their yearly income, and showing their homes one after another, along with any other trappings of their great wealth. I didn't think it made the point that the Mcains are really the elitists in this campaign. The interview with the woman was interesting..but didn't seem relevant to the McCain story. We need to keep driving that point home.

The people I would like to show this to won't watch it because they refuse to be confused by facts and the people who will watch it know he's a jerk so you're kind of preaching to the choir! Include all 10 homes and lets discuss how he became a multi-millionaire! That would be interesting.
  • Joel
Great video, but why did they use a very overweight woman? They should have shown an average weight woman with a couple of kids on her lap. Have a kid open the refrig and show very little food in there.
They should have printed, in Bold Letters: "Strong Republican Family Values". John BUSH McCain committed ADULTRY while his sick wife was in a hospital bed. Then married an arrested illegal drug addict.

And to the National Obama Campaign:
    OBAMA FIGHT BACK!
OBAMA FIGHT BACK WITH THE TRUTH!
    OBAMA FIGHT BACK!
  • Jean
Gets the point across, but would be much more effective and credible if it actually showed all 10 homes owned by McCain. Two that are shown are in the same building, which leads one to believe at least one of them must be used for investment income. Which ones does he actually own for his own personal use not for income property??
  • sharon
I wonder if the woman in the video who lost her home was made clearly aware of the increase in her mortgage. Many of these folks were not
informed in a clear and honest way.
Also, I do agree that it would be much more credible to see all ten of McCain's homes and know which are rented out and which he uses.
  • While this video certainly shows how wealthy the McCains are, I honestly couldn't sympathize much with the woman sharing her story. She didn't feel she'd been irresponsible... yet she took out a mortgage with a rate that would go up to 15+%, whose payments would eventually exceed her income? They got themselves in a financial pickle, and that's sad, but what did they expect would happen, with that kind of a loan?
  • richard k
What really hurts is hearing the candidates, yes, both candidates, telling people what they think they want to hear. McCain does this all the time. But it is distressing to now hear Obama endorsing new off-shore drilling as helping solve our energy crisis. New off-shore drilling wouldn't put new oil on the market for 15 years, and by then, we must be off oil and on alternative energy supplies. My God, even Bush said we were addicted to oil. Wake up, Obama. Give your advisors a shake.
  • Robert
The video does not show 10 luxurious homes despite what was stated in the promo. Two of the ones that are shown are in the same town. This does not make sense unless he is renting them out. Although the general point is good, it appears you are overreaching and destroys the credibility of the entire video. Why can't you just stick to the facts?
  • ron
info on video, which i do not question, would be more meaningful if all 10 of the residences were

I have never begrudged anyone for making good money or being wealthy but these people have to ask where their wealth really came from. Mostly from the workers/employees that were not able to share in the wealth. It is great to be in a country where one can live well, but you have to stop and think when living better ends. I have to admit that I do not know where John McCain made his wealth but being wealthy and preaching to the poor seems like an oxymorn to me. That also includes those evangilistic preachers of which John McCain condones.
