Campaign: Close GITMO

Close Gitmo and Help Reclaim Democracy

We have the chance to help President-elect Obama reclaim democracy and restore the rule of law in our country, which he can do on his first day in office. By shutting down the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison facility, Obama can take a major step toward redeeming our nation's moral leadership in the world. And by ending unconstitutional military commissions and banning torture, he can cut ties with the highly controversial Bush era of national security.

We must seize this critical moment to end the abuses that the Bush administration has perpetrated for the past eight years. That's why we partnered with the ACLU to bring to you our newest video.

This is the first in a series of videos underscoring the urgent need to close GITMO and end unconstitutional military commissions. We urge you to sign the petition and ensure that the human rights violations at GITMO never occur again. Then send this video to your friends and ask them to sign up as well.

The ACLU is taking this campaign even further by hosting an open Town Hall Meeting tonight at 8pm ET, when people from all across the country will gather via teleconference to discuss the state of civil liberties in our country. Take part in this important conversation, and help President-elect Obama take decisive action to close GITMO.

  • Obama's claims of closing down GITMO are very important and crucial in redirecting our foreign policy but the fact that he does not even consider investigating, trying or even mentioning the massive civil rights violations on our own people by members of the past administration. His closing of guantanamo is actually ensuring the building of new facilities to house the detainees of GITMO, and his push into Pakistan and furthering the takeover effort in Afghanistan also ensures military contractors a sustained American military presence with no actual scaling back of CIA funded operations. Only years ago, the Pakistani connection to US was quite strong, Now Pakistani officials are confounded at our turnaround from support to contention. The CIA-ISI links have forged crucial connections to terrorist organizations, resulting in a self-sustained war where many are dying by our dollar. If Obama were to assure the world that covert operations will stop and that federal funding of state terrorism will stop, only then can we safely say that this man does have our, and the world's best interests in mind. Another region that cannot be left alone is Africa. If all Obama can do is redirect troops into Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and into Africa through AFRICOM, the recently mandated military command unit, while Iraq is perfect;y corporatized with the dollar remaining its reserve currency, what exact victories can be identified. Please follow the roots, the actions and the motive of our current gang of leaders. The guise of national security can virtually obliterate the fight for personal freedom. Funnily enough, the very constitutional text that is being permanently redacted, amended if you must, to an uncertain end, considered individual freedom as the first step to actual national security whereas the current view regards such a freedom as one of the greatest undermining elements to a secure state. Well, intelligence community-managed state security seems to spark and draw far more fire than previously experienced. We need a leader who isn't afraif to investigate the insiders, not promote them or excuse their crimes. Those with so much control must be held accountable. When I see Obama and Bush, I see a reign of royalty that barely needs to even refuse giving up such power as long as people don't even know that they are carrying the genes of kings, dating back to pharaohs. And we're waiting for help?
