We could see a true champion of workers’ rights become Labor Secretary today. After anti-labor Republicans did everything they could to postpone the nomination of Congresswoman Hilda Solis, the Senate Health Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee voted in favor of Solis yesterday. The vote could go before the full Senate today.
Committee Chairman Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) has called Solis “a tireless champion for working families.” And he couldn’t be more accurate with his praise. Not only was Solis raised by two union members, but she has devoted her entire career toward seeking fairness in the work place. According to the SEIU, Solis has fought for green jobs, fair pay for women, and children’s health insurance. She would help create millions of new jobs at a time when our economy is suffering, and she would oversee the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, thereby helping workers unionize more easily.
That’s why there was such an outcry when the Republicans stonewalled Solis’ nomination. The progressive blogosphere was up in arms, petitions were passed around, Facebook groups launched. Prior to yesterday’s vote, the SEIU joined UFW, UFCW, Change to Win and the Courage Campaign to deliver nearly 20,000 petitions to Senator Kennedy and ranking committee member Senator Enzi in support of Congresswoman Solis.
After watching the Bush administration’s Labor Secretary Elaine Chao favor big business over workers’ rights and best interests for the past eight years, we’re on the verge of seeing a new day for our nation’s middle class.
