Yup, I'm breaking away from politics to talk about a team I grew up rooting for as a young pup in New York City--a team that just pulled off the second biggest upset in a Super Bowl. Ever. And that's according to the point spread, while if you count the way our modern media machine slobbers over "winners," declaring them inevitable at the drop of a hat (see Hillary & Barack, three times each the past 3 months, and the Patriots up until yesterday), it may just be the biggest upset ever (apologies to Broadway Joe Namath).
Why was this win so cool? Let me count the ways:
1) People were crowning this Patriots team, only the second undefeated team during the regular football season, the best ever--before they even, ya know, WON THE GAME.
2) As I said, I grew up a Giants fan. It's personal. 'Nuff said.
3) My friends from the Greater New England area made fun of me all week about how we had no chance. I could respond in kind. But, as you know from reading this blog, I am too mild mannered to do something like that :)
4) If the Giants can win, perhaps so can the Democrats?
5) The Patriots Coach, Bil Belichick, is a classless bafoon. He was caught illegally videotaping The Jets practicing earlier this year and got nothing so much as a slap on the wrist. He likes to run up the score when his team is winning. He left the field before the game was over yesterday, in an ultimate sign of disrespect and in all the interviews I saw, refused to credit the Giants with beating him team--instead choosing to blame his own team (this from a guy who got a huge boost earlier in his career as a Giants assistant coach).
6) My son just learned how to say touchdown. How's that for timing!
I think I'll just stop there and enjoy the positive energy floating around the Schecter household. Next up--A Democratic President and 60 Senate seats.
