This is not an endorsement of Rev. Wright's rhetoric, which I find insensitive and counter-productive.
But I do wonder, as he does, where was the outrage when we were the perpetrators and not the victims?
I wish he had not said "God damn America." Those three words in succession are such a vitriolic combination and a gift to the Religious Right. And it detracts from the point.
Senator Obama gave a brilliant speech yesterday and elevated the positive tenor that has sustained his candidacy. In my mind, he has left no doubt that he is the best choice for President of the United States.
I hope the full spectrum of debate over American Foreign Policy can eventually come out into the open. I hope we can do so without incendiary statements such as Rev. Wright's. But as long as the status quo is so painfully lopsided, voices of dissent will resort to such measures just so they can be heard.
