John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Kalamazoo, MI 01/12/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "How long has the war in Iraq been a war against radical Islam? I mean how long have you felt that . . . ?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think that we were fighting to stop one of the most evil dictators on earth from doing what he had done . . . I met with a high-ranking al-Qaeda member and I said, 'What is it that helped you do so well for a long time in Iraq?' He said, 'Two things.' He said, 'The lawlessness after the initial invasion.' That was a terrible mistake. We didn't have enough boots on the ground. Books have been written about all the mistakes that have been made. The second thing he said was, 'Abu Ghraib.' He said, 'And that was because of the humiliation of Iraqis that was shown to the world and to those people was the greatest recruiting tool [they] had.' The point: obviously our failure in Iraq ratcheted up the participation of Islamic extremists . . ."

QUESTIOENR: "What would capturing Osama bin-Laden do in the immediate future?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "Oh, I think it would cut off one of the great propaganda engines in this war."

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "I have been as unequivocal as possible; unequivocal as possible. Water-boarding is torture. It is prohibited by international agreement. It is torture by any criteria you want. Now, I believe that the CIA could probably use some additional techniques than those that are in the Army Field Manual. But those cannot be in violation of the Geneva Conventions, the bill that they call the McCain Amendment, that prohibits cruel, inhumane treatment or degrading treatment. I believe under President Reagan we passed anti-torture convention. There's the Detainee Treatment Act, there's all kinds of laws that prohibit torture. Water-boarding is torture and I don't think there's any doubt about that. And I know there's some people that say well, you'd have to use it under certain circumstances. Well, I just don't accept that ... I noticed that the Israelis don't use torture ... If we use torture on people, I don't think that it helps us differentiate between ourselves and the people we're tryin' to defeat. And that's why the military ... becasue they're worried about in future wars if our members of the military become captive ..."

Former CENTCOM Commander General John Abazaid discusses how prosecution of international terrorism has affected global perceptions of the United States.

-----

In the wake of the abrupt departure of his successor, Adm. William J. Fallon, who served just over a year, and the high profile of the issue of the U.S. presence in Iraq in the presidential campaign, General Abizaid offers a timely examination of U.S. presence in the Middle East: past, present, and future - Grace Cathedral

John P. Abizaid retired from the United States Army after 34 years, during which he rose from an infantry platoon leader to become the youngest four-star general in the Army and the longest-serving commander of United States Central Command.

General Abizaid is a highly decorated officer who has been awarded numerous service medals and holds military honors from Germany, France, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Australia, Afghanistan and Egypt. In June 2007, he returned to the Hoover Institution as the Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow.

Alan Jones, Ph.D., has been dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco since 1985. Jones was formerly the director of the Center for Christian Spirituality and Stephen F. Bayne Professor of Ascetical Theology at General Theological Seminary in New York City. Born and educated in England, Jones was also on the staff of Trinity Institute of Wall Street's Trinity Church. He became a citizen of the United States in 1975.

Congressional Hearings Shed New Light on Government's Endorsement of Torture; Maj. Gen. Taguba Accuses Bush Administration of War Crimes

On Tuesday, the Senate Armed Services Committee held an eight-hour hearing that exposed the role of top Bush administration officials in authorizing the use of harsh interrogation techniques. Meanwhile, Retired Major General Antonio Taguba, the Army general who first investigated the abuse at Abu Ghraib, has accused the Bush administration of committing war crimes. "The commander in chief and those under him authorized a systematic regime of torture," Taguba said. [includes rush transcript]

McClatchy Interviews 66 Fmr. Prisoners Held by US, Finds Widespread Abuse and Wrongful Imprisonments

McClatchy Newspapers has conducted an extensive eight-month investigation of the US detention system created after 9/11. Based on interviews with sixty-six former prisoners, the investigation found that the US imprisoned innocent men, subjected them to abuse, stripped them of their legal rights and allowed Islamic militants to turn the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay into a school for jihad.

From Tom Hayden:

In the depths of the Cold War, Stanley Kubrick created a notoriously-mad scientist character, Dr. Strangelove, whose passion was for dropping atomic bombs. Now there is a rising media and Beltway fascination with a new Dr. Strangelove, whose passion is imposing a mad science of counterinsurgency on Iraq.

His name is David Kilcullen, an Australian academic and military veteran whom the Washington Post's Thomas Ricks once described as Gen. David Petraeus' "chief adviser" on the counterinsurgency doctrine underlying the surge in Iraq.

Kilcullen advocated a "global Phoenix program" in an obscure military journal, Small Wars, in 2004. For the ahistorical or uninitiated, Phoenix was a largely off-the-books detention, torture and assassination program aimed at tens of thousands of South Vietnamese who were identified by informants as the Vietcong's "civilian infrastructure." The venture was so discredited that the US Congress denounced and disbanded it after hearings in the 1970s.

But Kilcullen says the Phoenix program was "unfairly maligned" and was actually a success. So inflammatory was his advocacy in some circles that he revised his 2004 paper to rename the Phoenix program one of "revolutionary development."

Thanks to a new report from ABC News, we now know that Condoleezza Rice led White House meetings authorizing torture that were so detailed, "the interrogation sessions were almost choreographed."

How can we express the terrible shock we have felt from the fact that our government is using torture? How can we express what so many of us are thinking—that it is absolutely appalling to know that our representatives are implementing barbaric instruments of torture as policy? How do we express our moral outrage?

Perhaps more importantly, how do we begin to take steps towards ending this heinous crime? Sign the petition and demand Secretary of State Rice to resign.

Our allies at True Majority, USAction, and Democracy for America have launched a campaign to start calling out our leaders by focusing on Condoleezza Rice. No, she is not the President. But we want to call attention to the fact that the Secretary of State called for torture when she was National Security Adviser.

This is our campaign to get all three Presidential nominees to call for Rice's resignation. Accountability must start with her, especially now that she's being mentioned as a potential Vice Presidential candidate. We want to push all the Presidential candidates on this issue. They need to make a public stance: Condi Must Go!

Join us in taking action. Join us in creating a firestorm while the traditional media is missing in action. Join us in spreading the word to mobilize our country. We cannot tolerate officials with a blatant disregard for human rights!

When "enhanced interrogation techniques" get a little too "enhanced," they can always be outsourced to private contractors like CACI... for the right price.

The "New World Order" promises More of these incidents:

Stark County, OH: Oct 21, 2006:

The VICTIM in a 911 call to Stark County, OH Sherrif's office turns into an Abu Ghraib incident where enforcement by humiliation has become common practice against women taken into custody by corrupted enforcement agencies.

Unbelivably, the Sheriff defends the officers as doing eveything "by the book."

Militarization of America's police is vital to the New World Order and Globalization of poverty. These brutal police acts are "practice" for America's future need for Martial Law, when citizens discover - too late - their Bill of Rights has become nothing more than a quaint museum piece.

This video is the tip of an iceberg in Human Rights violations. There arn't enough video cameras to expose them all.
