U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates suffered a fractured shoulder after slipping on ice Tuesday night at his Washington home, the Pentagon said. [...]
"I think he's in a lot of pain," [Pentagon spokesman Geoff] Morrell said.

Gates apparently slipped as he returned from dinner, he said.

Either the food was really heavy and affected his balance, or he made one toast too many, whaddya think?

Gates will continue to perform his duties as defense chief, Pentagon officials said.
Gates won't be able to appear Wednesday for a hearing on the Pentagon's budget before the House Appropriations Committee. Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England will testify in his place.

Ah ha! So that's the excuse he's using to avoid testifying. Nice one, a brand new twist, if you will. We'll let him skate on that one.

I fear law enforcement officials even though I have never committed a crime, violent or non-violent.

My first encounter with a cop occurred at the high school principal's office when I was 16. He was there to investigate a report of child abuse that a teacher had filed on my behalf without my knowledge when I had confided in her about my father's violent outbursts related to my sexual orientation. I was a deer stuck in the headlights, scared because I felt the need to protect my family even while keep myself in an awful situation. Thus, I kept quiet and denied all allegations. From that point on, my guilt and fear got the better of me and I decided to do my best and avoid all possible situations that could put me in any interaction with law enforcement, no matter how much it endangered me.

The years passed and nothing serious occurred until the driver of a vehicle decided to smash into me while I was crossing an intersection on my bicycle. Injured with a damaged bicycle, all I could think about was getting away from the scene of the accident before a crowd gathered and any cops arrived. Not heeding the words of the driver or exchanging any contact information, I scrambled away from the site as fast as my body would let me.

Looking back, I had once again acted irrationally out of fear. I was angry at myself for not being more careful even though the accident was not my fault. I was angrier because my status as an undocumented student subconsciously made me act like I had done something wrong and needed to escape punishment.

How can I protect myself when my mere existence here is questionable to authorities that should otherwise make me feel secure? How do I assert and sustain my human rights without jeopardizing the safety and comfort of my family and me? I eventually settled the questions with a philosophical drivel-security is an ontolologically unstable concept in as much as we are never really "secure." Living underground, I am secure because I no longer demand security.

John Edwards' daughter hit by (alleged) drunk driver

It was a "minor" accident. But there's nothing "minor" about someone driving drunk and rear-ending another car. And when the person in that car is the daughter of a leading presidential candidate, that's when we hear about it:

Cate Edwards is the older daughter of presidential candidate John Edwards (D).
According to Chapel Hill Police investigators, Edwards was driving a 2007 Ford Sedan when she slowed down at a red light and was rear-ended by a woman driving a 1989 Toyota.
Officials with the Edwards Campaign say Cate was not injured in the crash and calls the accident "minor".
Chapel Hill Police charged 45-year-old Carol Small with DWI after they say they measured her blood alcohol content at .17. Chapel Hill police say Edwards' car suffered an estimated $2000 worth of damage.

It's a relief that she's okay. Now is anyone going to find a way to spin this negatively? I don't see how, but it's not a stretch to imagine that somebody will.
