► samharris.com

Sam introduces you to Lisa Picotte, his friend Actress, Acting Coach and Mom to Vlog Person favorite, Gracie!

LISA PICOTTE began acting at the age of eight as a member of the nationally-acclaimed Rainbow Company Children's Theatre Ensemble in Las Vegas, NV. She was required to work on every show in the five-show season in some capacity, either onstage or behind the scenes. While she was a member, Rainbow Company was awarded the title Best Children's Theatre in the United States two years in a row. By the time she left the company, Lisa was a veteran of over 40 productions, including drama, comedy and musical theatre. Lisa went on to study at Los Angeles City College's Theatre Academy and began working professionally at the age of 18.

Lisa's film and television credits include regular and recurring roles on such series as His and Hers, Married with Children, Great Scott!, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, and Dangerous Women, as well as guest roles on such series as The Closer, ER, The X-Files, The Fighting Fitzgeralds, Titus, Step by Step, Wings and Howe High. Film credits include roles in the soon-to-be-released Jekyll, The Earth vs. The Spider, Enchanted, Strange Days and The Homestead.

You may have seen her running down a grocery store aisle, scooping up packages of Quilted Northern Bathroom Tissue or serving up bowls of Dreyers Grand Ice Cream, as she has done dozens of national television commercials, including such other products as Western Union, Pizza Hut, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Nutri-system, and Zings, among others.

One of Lisa's favorite projects was creating and hosting the cult-favorite Internet series entitled Oh, For God's Sake, I Don't Get It!, episodes of which can still be seen at www.onlinevoice.com.

Lisa is the recipient of several critics' awards and nominations for her extensive work in Los Angeles legit and musical theatre, including such productions as Merrily We Roll Along, both at West Coast Ensemble and Reprise! (LA Weekly Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress), Company (Garland and Dramalogue Awards), A Quarrel of Sparrows (LA Weekly Award nominee), Music From Down the Hill (Dramalogue Award), and Quilters (Dramalogue Award), among many others. In addition to West Coast Ensemble, Lisa is also a member of the Musical Theatre Guild, having appeared in many of their productions, including I Can Get It For You Wholesale, Parade, Allegro, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Louisiana Purchase.

Lisa received a scholarship and studied Shakespeare at London's Royal National Theatre, and is currently writing a screenplay based on her recently-published short story Casino Eyes.

She currently lives in Los Angeles, and in her free time, like her actor-husband David Kaufman, is obsessed with games -- hearts, mah jong, Yahtzee, Michigan Rummy -- whatever -- it doesn't matter, as long as she wins! Her proudest achievement is being mother to daughter Gracie and son Henry Oliver.

Lisa's Resume:

Bestselling author Neal Stephenson theorizes on why "niche" science-fiction / fantasy actors like Lucy Lawless, Hugo Weaving and Leonard Nimoy so often end up cast in these types of roles.

-----

Neal Stephenson delivered a talk entitled The Fork: Science Fiction versus Mundane Culture at Gresham College.

Four professors discuss the origins of science fiction, its overlap with other genres and its developments over more than a century.

Neal Stephenson is the best-selling author of such novels as Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle. He is best know for writing science fiction (in the postcyberpunk genre) and his interests often lead him into investigations of society, mathematics, cryptology, currency and the history of science.

Sam talks with actor, Bill Brochtrup.

Bill Brochtrup was raised in Tacoma, Washington, attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and NYU. he has proven his acting talent in a variety of roles on TV, film and on the stage. His first television role was in the series "Hot Pursuit" (1984) and he went on to appear in such series as "Dharma & Greg" (1997), "Picket Fences" (1992) and "Murder, She Wrote" (1984). Bill's movie credits include Ravenous (1999), in which he starred opposite Robert Carlyle and Guy Pearce.

He was originally cast for just two episodes of "NYPD Blue" (1993) during the show's second season. However, when his splendid portrayal of "P.A.A. John Irvin" won over the show's producers and audience alike, he was invited to reprise the very same role in comedy series "Public Morals" (1996). In 1998, Bill returned to "NYPD Blue" as Irvin, who continues to be a much-loved character.

Bill's Filmography:

Actor Harry Shearer reads an excerpt from his novel, "Not Enough Indians."

This clip contains explicit language.

-----

Meet the residents of Gammage, NY, a town so far down on its luck that WalMart would rather site its new store in the middle of a lake than in Gammage. Mayor Zorn and the rest of the town council are on the verge of declaring the town bankrupt, when inspiration strikes. Why not petition for Indian Tribal status and open a casino? With the gears in Washington appropriately greased, the ink is barely dry on their Tribal certification when Gammage is transformed into the sovereign nation of the long-lost Filaquonsett tribe.

It's only a matter of trading in their housecoats and galoshes for buckskins and moccasins, and boning up on their tribal lore and ceremonial dances, until the "Council of Elders" is ready to import some casino backing and gaming know-how...Funny, smart, antic, and scathing, "Not Enough Indians" is a brilliant ensemble piece mixing misadventure, hilarity, and the great American dream, from actor, musician, SNL cast member, voice of The Simpsons, and now novelist Harry Shearer.

Carl Hiaasen writes, "Harry Shearer has one of America's great satirical minds, and he's in beautifully wicked form with Not Enough Indians." Harry Shearer's nationally syndicated radio show, Le Show, has been on the air for sixteen years, and his political blog runs in huffingtonpost.com - Cody's Books
