(August 7, 2008) While the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan dominate most war news coverage, there is another war raging much closer to the United States. The Mexican police and army are waging a battle against the cash rich and weapons-heavy drug cartels with 2008 being one of the bloodiest years to date. While U.S news usually portrays the confrontations as a Mexican problem threatening to move north, Latin news sources paint a picture of U.S demand driving the cartels to do whatever it takes to move the drugs north.

President (sic) Bush discusses his drinking problem. Isn't that special? Now if only he could discuss the other 2,734,344,570,222 problems he as:

In a rare public comment on his past problems with alcohol, President Bush told a group at a Baltimore non-profit Tuesday that he had had a drinking problem in the past, and that “addiction is hard to overcome.”

Last month, he told an ABC interviewer that he had never been a "knee-walking drunk," but that "I doubt I'd be standing here if I hadn't quit drinking whiskey, and beer, and wine and all that."

Um, George, in case you hadn't noticed, you're not all here, standing or not.

On Tuesday, during his visit to the Jericho Program, he said that “if you remember, I drank too much at one time in my life.

If we remember? Gee, I don't remember that he was a sloppy, self-destructive, bratty, frat-boy drunk, do you? Do you remember that? Who out there remembers that? Hands?

Bush has said several times that he often drank too much when he was younger, and that he quit drinking after overindulging on his 40th birthday.

Shortly before the 2000 presidential vote, news reports revealed he had been arrested in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol near his parents' home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

“Alcohol can compete with your affections. It sure did in my case — affections with your family, or affections for exercise,” Bush told the ABC News interviewer last month.

I bet Pickles got jealous. And you know what they say about a woman scorned...

"It was the competition that I decided just wasn't worth it.”

The president also maintained then that he has not had a drink of alcohol since he quit more than two decades ago, and said he's a "better man for it."

If this is Bush as a "better man", I can't even begin to imagine him as a worse one. My head would explode. Bottoms up, George.

Medical historian Allan Brandt discusses the history of conflict between health researchers and the American tobacco industry.

-----

Allan Brandt researched "The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America," and after doing so for twenty years, he has become one of the top expert witnesses for tobacco-related state and federal cases. In 2004 Brandt took the stand as an expert witness for two full days of cross-examination in the case of U.S. vs. Phillip Morris. The judge's opinion referenced Brandt's testimony nearly 200 times and for the first time ever tobacco companies were found to be in violation of Federal racketeering statutes.

Now, in "The Cigarette Century," Brandt presents the definitive history of the cigarette, both as the ultimate cultural icon and as the produce that shaped US agriculture, big business, medicine, and regulatory policies in the 20th century. Making extensive use of previously secret corporate documents which became available in the last decade as a result of litigation, Brandt offers critical analysis of the cigarette controversy and how the industry used sophisticated public relations to invent a modern "disinformation" campaign. -- Cody's Books

Allan Brandt is the Amalie Moses Kass Professor of the History of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and holds a joint appointment in the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University.
