<p><p>When we launched <a href="../blog/49248-mccain-s-mansions-the-houses-that-greed-built">McCain's Mansions</a> on Monday, we revealed how McCain's elitist lifestyle—10 multi-million dollar mansions, flying around the country in his wife's personal jet—has rendered him completely <a href="../blog/49431-mccain-s-too-out-of-touch-to-realize-he-s-out-of-touch">out of touch</a> with hard-working Americans. Not only did the video make a huge splash, commanding over 200,000 views, but it continues to make waves. The media is now putting McCain on the spot about his uber affluence, and as it turns out, McCain owns so many homes he doesn't even remember how many he owns! </p><p>In an <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12685.html">interview with Politico</a> yesterday, McCain couldn't recall just how many homes he has. "I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain said. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you." </p><p>Politico claimed McCain owns at least four, but <a href="http://progressiveaccountability.org/2008/08/21/media-fact-check-mccains-houses/">Progressive Accountability declared</a> that the McCains own at least ten properties worth a whopping $13,823,269 (h/t Ari). As you would expect, the Obama campaign had a field day with McCain's gaffe, whipping together <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpmFd25tRqo">this ad</a> claiming McCain has seven homes, then flashing a picture of the White House as "one house America can't afford to left John McCain move into." </p><p>The fact that <a href="http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2008/08/seven_house_army.php">this total varies</a> ought to baffle McCain even further as the mainstream media frenzy begins. But whatever the true total is, the bottom line is that McCain has so much wealth he has no concept of money—unless of course it's money from lobbyists and corporations or to buy more mansions. That's why at Saturday's Saddleback forum McCain ludicrously declared it takes <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/08/18/mccain-definition-rich-graph/">$5 million</a><a href="http://thinkprogress.org/2008/08/18/mccain-definition-rich-graph/"> to move from "middle class" to "rich."</a> That's why he admitted economics isn't his strong suit and came up with a plan to sink our country even further into debt. And that's why he can't sympathize with Americans facing foreclosure, soaring gas prices, unemployment, and the daunting costs of health insurance. None of these problems register when you're living in a solid gold bubble like McCain, or however many gold bubbles he's living in. </p></p>

<p>I hike, I swim, I do light exercises. I love to hike around my beautiful estate. Two summers ago, one of my sons and I hiked rim to rim the Grand Canyon. Took us three days, but it's one of the great experiences that you can ever have. And I get up and do exercise. But I can also tell you that campaigning is pretty good exercise too. [...] And you never get to eat because you're always speaking while others are eating, or dozing. And it really is a lot of exercise working the rope line, shaking hands with people, going from one place to another. But also, we have a place in Northern Arizona that's on Oak Creek, which is one of the most beautiful places in the world. And I do go in the very shallow water there. But mainly it's through hiking that I enjoy because you can enjoy the great natural beauty as well as getting your exercise."</p>

<p>i especially like the concept of 2012 because the DAY on which the world ends in the Mayan calendar is my birthday, December 23. yay! </p>

<p><p>Arizona's experimentation in tough anti-'illegal' immigration law seems to have backfired as the very politicians who voted for tough sanctions against employers that hire undocumented workers are now <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/20/AR2008042001755.html">proposing</a> a state guestworker program to draw undocumented immigrants back to the state. Faced with the reality of business outcry due to labor shortages in agriculture, construction, hospitality and other propitious jobs, politicians in Arizona are willing to compromise on importing laborers from Mexico due to the incompetency of federal immigration legislation on <a href="http://www.fb.org/index.php?fuseaction=newsroom.newsfocus&amp;year=2008&amp;file=nr0415b.html">guestworkers</a>.</p><p>The now-famous Prince Williams County in Virginia may follow suit soon. Along with the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/16/AR2008041600108.html">$6.9 million</a> annual cost of catching and apprehending undocumented workers, Prince Williams County is losing a significant sales, business and property tax base as undocumented immigrants are leaving the county. Already, the county is <a href="http://www.wavy.com/Global/story.asp?S=8248161&amp;nav=23iie2Pu">softening</a>--now police officers can only interrogate criminal suspects about their immigration status after they are arrested as compared to the more stringent earlier rule that law enforcement had to check the residency status of anyone who is detained, no matter how minor the offense.</p><p>As more states come down hard on undocumented workers, it shall be interesting to study and document the effects of tough immigration legislation. </p></p>
