talks on organising an election later in the year. </p> <p>In the last two weeks, the interim government says its detained at least 25,000 people, on charges of corruption. </p> <p>Among them, the eldest son of Khaleda Zia, former prime minister.</p> <p>Lawyers for Tareque Rahman said he has been tortured during custody, and that he may be permanently crippled as a result.</p> <p> <br />However background of the state of emergency and why it was placed. </p> <p>The prime minister says it was declared in January 2007 to bring the country back to normalcy and root out corruption that plagued the country for many years. </p> <p>No specific time has been given to lift the emergency and the deadline to have free elections is set for December 2008.</p> <p>The prime minister says he is
