Complete video at: fora.tv

Pakistani politician and activist Imran Khan argues that acceptance of U.S. financial and political support has had mostly negative effects for his country.

-----

Elections vs. Democracy: Post-Bhutto Pakistan and the International Community with discussant Imran Khan, the World Cup cricketer turned political activist and opponent of military rule in Pakistan. Ali Ahsan, associate officer in the executive office of the U.N. Secretary-General, provides commentary.

With the assassination of Benazir Bhutto at the end of 2007, an already turbulent country in the front lines of many of the international community's most pressing concerns - terrorism, nuclear weapons, development, and democracy - was thrown into even greater political turmoil. Parliamentary elections have been rescheduled to February 18, but will elections signify democratic change? And what are the stakes for the international community? - The Century Foundation

Imran Khan is Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek‐e‐Insaf Party (Movement for Justice). A former cricket legend, Mr. Khan was international cricketer of the year in 1989‐1990 and led Pakistan to a World Cup victory in 1992. He transitioned into politics in 1996 and is now an outspoken political opponent of the military regime led by Pervez Musharraf.

Born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1952, he earned degrees in economics and politics at Kebel College of Oxford University.

This is that strange thing that furners do on their news channels...you know reporting and stuff. I know, I also don't know how they fit it in between videos of Britney Spears giving birth while driving on a fifth of Scotch. Oh wait, you mean they don't show that stuff...

In any case, this is important. It is disturbing. And it is necessary to watch. I know we don't care much about "Stans" over here, but we might want to know what's going on in one where there is the potential for loose or preemptively launched nukes.

(h/t Bob Cesca's Goddamn Awesome Blog!)

The hysterical Fred Barnes calls the Bhutto assassination in Pakistan "incredibly harmful" and yet he still gives the Bush administration "credit for engineering the return of Benazir Bhutto" despite fact that it "didn't work".

Only on Fox "News".

Pinch me. Bob Novak is accusing the Bush administration of turning a blind eye to Benazir Bhutto's security. Novakula also suggests that the Pakistani government murdered her. And he agrees with this post that the assassination was not typical of an Al-Qaeda attack.

The assassination of Benazir Bhutto followed urgent pleas to the State Department for the last two months by her representatives for better security protection. The U.S. reaction was that she was worried over nothing, expressing assurance that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf would not let anything happen to her. [...] It was, according to the written complaint, an attempt to preserve the politically endangered Musharraf as President Bush's man in Islamabad.

Sound familiar?

When I last saw Bhutto in August in Manhattan, she was deeply concerned about U.S. ambivalence but asked me not to write about it. She had not heard from Musharraf for three weeks after their secret July meeting in Abu Dhabi. She feared the Pakistani strongman was not being prodded from Washington.

Why would Bush prod him? That might be construed as the right thing to do.

In early December, a former Pakistani official supporting Bhutto visited a senior U.S. government official to renew her security requests. He got a brush-off, a mind-set reflected Dec. 6 in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

BushCo has so much blood on its hands, it makes the carnage in Sweeney Todd look like a paper cut.

A more sinister fallout of a free hand from Washington for Pakistan might be Bhutto's murder. Neither her shooting last Thursday nor the attempt on her life Oct. 18 bore the classic al-Qaida trademark. After the carnage, government trucks used streams of water to clean up the blood and in the process destroy forensic evidence. If not too late, would an investigation by the FBI still be in order?

Musharraf's critics say an election would be a sham with Bhutto dead.

One thing we all understand: Bush's hand in a sham election, no matter where it is.
