Bernard B. Kerik, who was Mr. Giuliani’s police commissioner when some of the charges were billed, said in an interview yesterday that the security detail’s travel expenses would normally come out of the Police Department’s budget.
“There would be no need for anyone to conceal his detail’s travel expenses,” said Mr. Kerik, who was indicted earlier this month on unrelated federal tax fraud and corruption charges. “And I think It’s ridiculous for anyone to suggest that the mayor or his staff attempted to do so.”
Well that settles that, right?
When Bernie's vouching for Rudy and not vice versa you know someone's slippin' fast.

Bffs? Fer sure:

For weeks, Giuliani has been followed around New Hampshire by a man in a Rudy mask, carrying a sign that said “Free Bernie.” But today, outside the Politics and Eggs breakfast here, the masked man was joined by a friend -- a man in a mask closely resembling Bernard Kerik.

The Kerik impersonator took the “Free Bernie” sign, while the faux Rudy carried one that said “Best Friends Forever.” They waved at passersby, and were quick to hug each other when the cameras started rolling.

When asked to identify themselves, the two men pointed to photos of Giuliani and Kerik.

Like we didn't know this was coming-

(CNN) - A year after admitting to misdemeanor charges of financial impropriety, former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik faces new charges from a federal grand jury, sources familiar with the investigation said Thursday.
A sealed indictment against Kerik is expected to be unsealed on Friday, two sources familiar with the probe told CNN. No details of the charges involved were immediately available, but sources said earlier this week that prosecutors had been looking into allegations including bribery and tax evasion.

The best part? Unless he takes a plea deal, this trial will drag on during the busiest parts of the election year.

Legal nightmare, indeed:

Bernard Kerik's legal nightmare is about to get worse, with federal prosecutors expected to file charges against the former police commissioner that will likely include allegations of bribery, tax fraud and obstruction of justice, the Daily News has learned.
The indictment, expected next month, could prove to be an embarrassing obstacle for Kerik's former mentor Rudy Giuliani, who is cruising at the top of the polls heading into the presidential primary gauntlet.
The bribery allegations against Kerik stem from a secret meeting at a bar in Tribeca, according to two sources familiar with the federal probe.

And who's the biggest "beneficiary"?

The indictment will have direct implications for Giuliani, the sources said.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Giuliani has extensive ties to Kerik, promoting him to correction commissioner, then to police commissioner. Giuliani later also hired him at his firm, Giuliani Partners, and recommended him to President Bush for the job of Homeland Security secretary.
The relationship soured in December 2004 when Kerik withdrew from consideration for the Homeland Security job and a torrent of accusations of wrongdoing poured forth.
Giuliani has since admitted he had erred in pushing Kerik for the Homeland Security job.
"It was a mistake," Giuliani told CNN's Larry King in February. "I think the answer is I made a mistake and I took responsibility for it."

A mistake. Like locating the Office of Emergency Management's command center at 7 World Trade Center? That kind of mistake?

Wow, I just don't know what to say. I sure wish, at the behest of Rudy, this bastion of honesty and compassion could have been our Director of Homeland Security:

Asked to respond to criticism that Giuliani made a terrible, life-costing mistake by putting New York's terrorist response center in one of the Twin Towers - thereby rendering it moot when the building was hit - Kerik noted the clairvoyance of hindsight.
"Yeah," he said, "I wish I could look back and say some of the things I've done and moves I've made, I didn't make. But the reality is you don't have that luxury of going back. Was it a bad decision? Possibly. But I think people have to look beyond that and look at the scope of the response on 9/11."

Just feel the compassion and regret oozing from his pores! Well, just for memory's sake, let's look at "some of the things he's done" and "moves he's made" that he doesn't think are worth examining:

Kerik acknowledges that his past troubles - including, among other things, accepting $165,000 in free house renovations from a shady contractor, tax evasion, plotting to wiretap the husband of former Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro, and having romantic, extramarital trysts in an apartment designed to give weary 9/11 rescue workers rest - make him a pariah within Giuliani circles. Nevertheless, he took up the baton of championing his former boss' White House credentials.

Gee, I wonder why he wouldn't want to look back at that golden record of propriety? Oh, and just remember, he is only a "pariah" in Rudy circles because he got caught being a crook. Rudy hasn't made himself a pariah yet, for getting people killed by putting his command center in the most vulnerable place he could find.
