Talking Points Memo blogger Josh Marshall discusses the balance an opinion journalist must hold between political advocacy and informative reporting.

-----

On the 60th anniversary of Orwell's Politics and the English Language, George Orwell described political speech as consisting "largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness." Some six decades later, many symptoms of manipulation and propaganda diagnosed by Orwell persist on the American political landscape, along with new disinformation techniques enabled by modern technology.

Historians, scientists, philosophers, linguists, cognitive experts, journalists, image-makers, and public figures will debate in three separate sessions the current state of political discourse - and journalism's response to it - on the dawn of a bitterly contested presidential campaign - NYPL

Josh Marshall is the publisher of Talking Points Memo, TPMmuckraker, TPM Election Central and TPMCafe. He also writes a weekly column for the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill. His articles on politics and foreign affairs have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers across the United States as well as abroad, including the American Prospect, the Atlantic Monthly, the Boston Globe, the Financial Times, , the New Republic, the New Yorker, the New York Post, the New York Times, Salon, and Slate. Marshall graduated from Princeton in 1991 and holds a doctorate in American history from Brown. He lives in New York City with his wife Millet, their son Sam, and their dog Simon.

News Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch argues that all news media - News Corp's own Fox News included - is inherently prone to bias, and that the best counter to this problem is a diverse media representing a variety of opinions.

------

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch warned that "technology will continue to destroy all of the old ways and old assumptions, especially in the media" during an April 2 speech on "Creative Destruction: News for the 21st Century."

Rupert Murdoch is the chairman and chief executive officer of News Corporation, a global media company with properties in film, television, print and online.

News Corporation's subsidiaries include Fox News Channel, Dow Jones (publisher of the Wall Street Journal), 20th Century Fox, and MySpace - Georgetown University

Rupert Murdoch is an Australian-American global media mogul. He is the major shareholder, chairman and managing director of News Corporation (News Corp).

Beginning with newspapers, magazines and television stations in his native Australia, Murdoch expanded News Corp into the UK, US and Asian media markets. In recent years has become a leading investor in satellite television, the film industry, the Internet and media. News Corp is based in New York.

Thanks for viewing and post comments at the bottom.

Ok, here the run down!

When you hear the pundits on all the networks you start to notice all the constant repetitive wordplay on the election let's break it down!

Buzz word number 1: Jeremiah Wright -- The most popular buzz words from all right wing pundits! When you hear it, you know they're trying to paint Senator Obama as the "black candidate", "un-American", "racist" and anything they could think of! Project for Excellence in Broadcasting believes that the Jeremiah Wright issue dominated the news for over three weeks since the outburst at the National Press Club and NAACP dinner. So when Wright's name comes up.... You know what I'm talking about!

Buzz word number 2: 1968 -- When the Democratic Party held their convention in 1968, their were riots with outrage towards going to war with Vietnam, Robert F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s deaths. There was civil unrest towards the late 1960s. When you hear that word, you know that right wing pundits are expecting the Democratic Party to be divided cause over the outcome. I heard it on Rush Limbaugh (calls for riots), seen it on Newsbusters (Brent Bozell's commentary), and Karl Rove (calls of dividing the party).

Buzz word number 3: Black Vote and White Vote -- This is the old tactic to make it seem like a race issue. The polls show that Senator Obama won most of the Black vote. And it's mainly due to the Jeremiah Wright issue. The media harps on this and encourages the Blacks to vote for Obama over McCain and Clinton. This buzz word is the most common of the right wing pundits. Remember the Republicans love to race-bait and use divisive strategies to win. So when you hear right wing pundits say Black vote and White vote, then you know they are trying to divide the Democratic Party.

Buzz word number 4: Florida and Michigan --When the Democratic Party stripped the delegates from the two major states, the candidates were obligated not to accept the delegates. But since, Senator Hillary Clinton didn't win most of the primaries; she wants to include the Florida and Michigan delegates in to at least manage a narrow lead against Senator Barack Obama. When you hear those words, you know they're trying to paint Obama as ineffective. They're trying to paint Clinton as a "cheater". They're trying to prop up John McCain to claim that he would win Florida seeing the Democrats as weak on issue in Florida.

Buzz word number 5: Positive -- Usually when a losing candidate is trying to generate support, the right wing pundits want to say "nice things" about a major rival or ally! The right wing pundits were very supportive of Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Now seeing that Barack Obama is the frontrunner, the right wing pundits are trying to paint Hillary Clinton as better candidate over Obama.

Buzz word number 6: Experience -- Has there been enough talk about who's experienced. When you hear the right wing pundits explain the reasons to not support Obama, it's basically a tactic to drive a wedge towards working class supporters and black voters.

Buzz word number 7: Polls -- Right wing pundits love the polls. They can determine who the more formable candidate is! But as I said in the last videos, don't believe what the polls say, don't believe what the pundits says, always believe that you're candidate can win. Ignore what people say about you're candidate. They don't know the candidate personally, and they'll excuse usually comes from listening to the media anyways. So when you hear a right wing pundit say that, you know what I am talking about!

Be on the lookout for these buzz words.

Rest in Peace to those who died in the Midwest and South during the tornados, the cyclone in Burma, former high school friend Tiffany Snow, and less than $1.999 a gallon for gas.

Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom.

Again, the corporate-owned media is at the helms of the recent controversy with Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

The media has made this the number one issue instead of the high oil prices, the high food prices and the two wars that are costing trillions of dollars.

And this also comes to the issue of why the Black vote goes to Obama.

The media has been spinning and reeling this "controversy" with Jeremiah Wright. The media seems to forget that members of the Trinity United Church of Christ may have family members across the country. These members are quite offended with the coverage of their church and they will take it to the voting booths. And the grapevine does spread!

If Blacks really believe that the Black church is being attacked, Senator Obama is blamed for Jeremiah Wright's words, and the media missteps with the context of the sermons! Then Blacks, who vote Democratic, will completely support Obama, period. That will prove to be very difficult to score points in the Black community if Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator John McCain decide to use the Jeremiah Wright issue. Cause the Black vote is very pivotal in this election. The Black vote supported Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Sr., Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush in their victories. The Black vote has supported Al Gore, John F. Kerry in their defeats.

So don't paint me as some "cult" figure over my leans toward Obama. I supported Ron Paul during his time and explained that if he didn't get the nomination, I will continue to vote Democratic.

I have grown very tired of this divisive strategy from the Republicans. Because they are in for a rude awaking if President Bush's doesn't prove he can handle the major issues.

So once again, this is honest opinion; you can agree or not agree. I just want to let my voice be heard. And my message to be sent to those who want change the direction of this country.

Now onto the name of this video: I want to make a cool title.
Here are some names: Wake Me Up If this Wright Issue Ends!
FOX News "loves" Dems
Why Worry, Jeremiah Wright is the Issue!
Hillary and Barack's FOX News Adventure

Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom.

Its real title is called "Wright the Wrongs!" But since of the controversy brewed between FOX News and Wright, I changed the title.

After months of scrunity from the media, Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., former pastor of Barack Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ, has finally responded to the attacks on him and his church.

Art Golab a writer from the Chicago Sun-Times wrote an article stating that Wright said some scathing comments about Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity while attending a funeral of a former judge.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/04/obamas-controve.html
http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/892017,wright041208.article

The Chicago Sun Times also have audio of the entire sermon (Note: the media was not allowed in the funeral! So I don't understand how the reporter managed to get this recording from the church and leak it to the mainstream media. Once again, this is the media that you can depend on! I bet FOX News paid the reporter to get the coverage of Wright, after all they knew he was talking about FOX, and they needed a story about Wright).

Some of the comments that were made on [O'Reilly and Hannity]:

"Fox News can't understand that. [Bill] O'Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity's stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe."

Now you know O'Reilly and Hannity will respond. I'll keep you posted on this "feud".

My written response:

My answer to O'Reilly and Hannity. Look here! You men are rich! You make a living on controversial issues! You do not care about the truth. All the things FOX News does is sensationalism. They make up stories without checking their facts. Now when people are attacking the network or you personally, you're naturally going to defend yourself. But in the case of O'Reilly and Hannity, they started the feud and now people respond back and they use the pity excuse. It's basically saying they go around saying that "Oh, he's attacking me! I was telling the truth! How dare him! He's going to regret attacking me!" That's what typical O'Reilly and Hannity do! Wise up! You can dish it out, but you can't take it! If you can't take it, "Shut the f*** up!" You people over at FOX News are nothing but "Republicans and Hot Babes!" I think the network only has just hot women, too much opinion and no substance.

I can't stop people from judging Pastor Jeremiah Wright, Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity. We have the right to criticize them, the government, the news media, television, President Bush, Vice President Cheney, or the candidates running for president!

The reason why I post these videos only tells the viewer: That I in no way support networks such as FOX News.

The main reason is mostly due to it's misleading coverage of all candidates and people they do not like. Not just Democrats, some Republicans (in case you forgot about Texas Representative Ron Paul).

So for those who are racist or ignorant, go ahead post your comments at the bottom. At least I show you people the diginity that I accept all comments.

Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom.

This is the truth:

1) 03/31/2008 Senator Barack Obama has more delegates than Senator Hillary Clinton. He is leading by over 150 delegates.

2) 03/31/2008 Senator Obama has more cash on hand for campaigning than Senators Clinton and John McCain.

3) 04/16/2008 - 04/19/2008 Aaron Kline a reporter from World Net Daily has written (another) smear piece on Obama. In this claim, Aaron Klein and John Batchelor were on conservative radio station WABC interviewing Ahmed Yousef a political advisor to (undisputed country) Palenstine's Hamas. This claim states that Yousef is supportive of Obama. Once again, the claim "Hamas supports Obama". Smell the fearmongering. FOX News runs the story on Carl Cameron blog and Martha McCallum's Live Desk.

4) 04/16/2008 - 04/19/2008 ABC News Democratic debate flopped. George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson were booed for the very same questions Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly used against Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright and professor Bill Ayers. Rush Limbaugh encourages Republicans to "rig" the primaries. He wants Republicans (uh, Democrats for a day) to vote for Clinton in part of his "OPERATION CHAOS". FOX News smears both Obama and Clinton when the Pope and Gordon Brown are in United States on diplomatic tour.

5) As of now, Barack Obama's YouTube page always has more than 1,000,000 viewers and thousands of subscribers. And that includes Amber Lee Ettenger (Obama Girl) videos! Senator Clinton and McCain can't get that many YouTube viewers on their videos.

With an economy in turmoil, high oil and food prices, home foreclosure, a war in Iraq and Afghanistan, falling dollar, job loss and global crisis overseas, many in America are seriously "bitter". In the old fashion the media divisive strategy is working.

"Why worry about these issues! We have a man who preach racist, hateful, anti-semitic rhetroic and denounced his country. We have a man who threaten to blow up his country and is unapologitic. In 2001, he written that he has no regrets to bombing New York police station, the Pentagon and was a part of the Woods Fund with the senator. This senator says small town Americans cling to their bibles, guns and morals. What an elitist!"

This statement is the typical Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly for you!

This disgrace in the media is why FOX News, talk radio and right wing pundits are slated for defeat. These negative campaign strategies brings the focus on the core reasons the Republicans are losing.

Instead of talking about how to overcome these problems, the media pile on more crap to an already ongoing Democratic race.

Senator Obama is going to be the potential Democratic nominee. And with that in mind, Senator Clinton is doing what the Republicans are doing. Take a strength and turn it into a weakness.

Remind yourselves that this is honest opinion! I in no way support FOX News due to their misleading coverage, faulty fact checking, and feuds with Obama and Clinton. If you think Democrats are getting bad coverage! Republicans who are not on the same page with FOX News are shunned or attacked. Take Senators Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, George Voinovich, Gordon Smith and Congressman Ron Paul.

Oh, by the way....Senators Clinton and McCain are deseperate! This man has a clean image, why not "muddy" it up!

[These] are the reasons why the American public is so turned off to politics and politicans.

This [Our] America! Do something.

Thanks for viewing and post your comments at the bottom.

I am leaning towards Senator Barack Obama, now! Thanks again FOX News!

Okay, here's the reason:

Earlier I posted a video about the media's obsession with Senator Barack Obama's words. Now I am back on YouTube defending him and Senator Hillary Clinton over the controversy surrounding ABC News Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos and nightly news anchor Charlie Gibson handling of the Demcoratic debate featured on ABC.

Why I chose the title was pretty simple! In regards to how far FOX News and its pundits push these non-issues on the Democratic candidates, I just couldn't help but speak on it!

George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson were booed for injecting FOX News in their questions. These very same questions Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly used against Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright and professor Bill Ayers. Rush Limbaugh encourages Republicans to "rig" the primaries. He wants Republicans (uh, Democrats for a day) to vote for Clinton in part of his "OPERATION CHAOS".

FOX News smears both Obama and Clinton when Pope Benedict and British prime minister Gordon Brown are in United States on diplomatic tour. Steve Doocy's son who attends a John McCain rally at a Pennsylvania college and slammed Hillary Clinton on MSNBC's Hardball. Doocy is an anchor/weatherman on FOX & Friends.

With an economy in turmoil, high oil and food prices, home foreclosure, a war in Iraq and Afghanistan, falling dollar, job loss and global crisis overseas, many in America are seriously "bitter". In the old fashion the media divisive strategy is working.

Remind yourselves that this is honest opinion! I in no way support FOX News due to their misleading coverage, faulty fact checking, and coverage of all candidates and people they do not like.

And to my Black Republicans watching, I want you people to know what's going down here: You people criticize the Democratic Party cause they once had promoted racism and slavery. That's the past, let's focus on the first Black candidate and woman candidate in a party that brings unity among others. You people want to support a party of rich people! Good for you.

Ok, here's some news for you guys:
If you want to know some racism - how about FOX News not having a African American anchor hosting a news program! Don't say Harris Faulkner, she doesn't host a program. CNN and MSNBC had Black people hosting programs.

If Obama's an elitist, then why Hannity and O'Reilly live in the rich parts of Long Island, New York!? How about a trip through Balitmore, Chicago's south side and Harlem, New York!

So for those who are racist or ignorant, go ahead post your comments at the bottom. At least I show you people the diginity that I accept all comments.

Video blogger and journalist Josh Wolf argues for greater transparency in politics and the media.

-----

"Freedom of the Blog," with Josh Wolf in conversation with Doug Sovern.

Josh Wolf, 25 year old video blogger, freelance journalist, and San Francisco mayoral candidate, served 226 days in prison after refusing to turn over a collection of videos of an anti-G8 anarchist protest to a Federal district court. Wolf, who was awarded the Journalist of the Year award by the Society of Professional Journalists in 2006, is considered by some a journalistic martyr, by others an "alleged journalist". Come hear his thoughts on freedom of the press in an age of technology, what defines a journalist and other issues.- Commonwealth Club of California

Joshua Wolf is an American video blogger and freelance journalist who was jailed by a Federal district court on August 1, 2006 for refusing to turn over a collection of videotapes he recorded during a July 2005 demonstration in San Francisco, California. Wolf served 226 days in prison at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, California, longer than any other journalist in U.S. history has served for protecting source materials. With permission from the prosecution, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered Wolf's release on April 3, 2007. On July 4, 2007, Wolf announced that he has filed a declaration of intent to run for mayor of San Francisco against incumbent Gavin Newsom.

Great stuff. Seems they've gotten alot better since Cliff joined as editorial writer. (kinda kidding)

A myth in the unmaking

Fox News's status as a politically impartial channel is at last being exposed as a fiction

Britons may be familiar with Rupert Murdoch, but I don't think the UK has a beast quite like the American Fox News Channel. Celebrating its 11th year on the air, Fox is a breathtaking institution. It is a lock, stock and barrel servant of the Republican party, devoted first and foremost to electing Republicans and defeating Democrats; it's even run by a man, Roger Ailes, who helped elect Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush senior to the presidency. And yet, because it minimally adheres to certain superficial conventions, it can masquerade as a "news" outfit and enjoy all the rights that accrue to that.

Much more at the link, but be forewarned, you'll be shaking your head at how clear the writer makes it.

Most of you are aware, and most likely have been for a while, that under the guise of "news" Fox has offered its viewers a steady stream of bias pertaining to social and political issues since its inception in 1996. From attacking Black America to pushing for war with Iran, from demonizing bloggers to distorting environmental issues, theirs is quite a record of achievement in propagating propaganda that is neither fair nor balanced.

Today we have a surprise (well at least it surprised all of us at BNF). Thanks to the terrific work of the News Hounds, we bring you Fox and ole' Billy O'Reilly attacking decency. Yes, you read that right. The self-righteous, pompous, bloviators who deign to lecture on how we should behave in our personal lives, are in fact exploiting women, pandering to the lowest common denominator and pushing smut out on the airwaves on a daily basis!

And this will definitely raise your hackles. YOU ARE PAYING FOR THIS! Yes, you read that right too. So watch the video and pass it along to your friends, acquaintances and anyone else not aleady spun by the "No Spin Zone." We simply must let the FCC know we are mad as hell about having their smut in our homes and being forced to pay for it. And we're simply not going to take it anymore.

Coerced confessions were involved in two different stories I saw reported last Friday, April 6.

I took my first clip from a story on PBS's NewsHour about the release of British sailors from Iran that you can find in its entirety at: www.pbs.org

My second clip comes from a KXTV channel 10 story on the new trial hearing in the Hamid Hayat case that you can find in its entirety at: www.news10.net

My third clip comes from a PBS Frontline story from last year that you can see in its entirety at: www.pbs.org

And, finally, the quote from the Atlantic article referenced in my video is available at: www.theatlantic.com

The Fox News obituary of Kurt Vonnegut airing the day after his death seemed particularly harsh to me, but I may be especially sensitive because I'm a big Vonnegut fan. I've uploaded some clips from the Fox News obituary for you to see and decide for yourself.

FYI, I tracked down the origin of the ancient Greek admonition "Not to speak evil of the dead" to Diogenes Laertius quoting Chilon (pictured at the beginning of this video) quoting Aesop at: www.classicpersuasion.org

Finally, this video also qualifies as the latest addition to my YouTube playlist titled "Fox News Bias" at: www.youtube.com

When Pres. George W Bush came out to explain the second veto of his presidency on May 1, I expected all the cable news networks to cover the live news event. I was somewhat surprised, however, to see Fox News drop out of covering the live Democratic response that came just 10 minutes later. I was most surprised to hear Fox News Washington Managing Editor Brit Hume explain candidly on live TV who he was helping with his editorial decision.
