Last week, I spoke at a conference organized by NYU's Center on Law and Security called "Privatizing Defense: Blackwater, Contractors, and American Security." Also present at the conference were Blackwater Worldwide vice president Martin Strong and a lawyer for Blackwater, David Hammond. At the conference, I confronted Strong on Blackwater's killing of 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisour Square on September 16, 2007. Blackwater's Lethal Contract Renewed

The U.S. State Department's renewal of Blackwater's contract to provide security in Iraq "is bad news," an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said.

Blackwater guards shot and killed 17 people, including women and children, last September, prompting an outcry and protest from Iraqi officials.

"This is bad news," al-Maliki adviser Sami al-Askari said. "I personally am not happy with this, especially because they have committed acts of aggression, killed Iraqis, and this has not been resolved yet positively for families of victims."

... there was her record on one more thing: Private security contractors. And what a record it was(n't)!

Yes, once upon a time, Susie McTooLate, the ranking member of the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, decided to question the use of private security contractors in a once-lovely, now-ravaged land far, far away called "Iraq". Susie thought money was being wasted on them. Susie had a flare for the obvious.

But uh-oh! A nice man named Tom Allen (along with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) had introduced legislation to address this very problem 4 months earlier! And that act was called the Stop Outsourcing Our Security Act (SOS).

Tsk! Superfluous Susie McTooLate, what were you even thinking?! Copycat.

SOS was supposed to phase out some contractors like ::shudder:: Blackwater in 6 tiny months. And U.S. government personnel would come to the rescue! And by January 1, 2009, it would be a very Happy New Year because all the rest of those security guys would be gone by then! What a happy ending that would be!

But wait! Was Susie trying to cover up her own inaction? Was she trying to pull the wool over our eyes? Or was it even wool...? Hmmmm. I bet she used polyester!

Her Senate chums had already been asking for hearings on Halliburton because of all the waste and fraud and abuse, oh my!

Susie had been the Chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee from 2003 through 2006. That meant she had complete control over investigative hearings. What an important job!

But Susie McTooLate refused to listen to her co-chums, including ranking member Senator Joe Lieberman and Senator Frank Lautenberg... even about abuse by The Evil Halliburton.

She blocked hearings for three whole years! Finally, she responded to a June 20, 2006 letter from all Democratic members of the Committee urging her to hold hearings by scheduling a single hearing with but one government witness.

The moral of the story is: Don't put off until tomorrow what you should have done many years earlier. People die, money is wasted, and Susie won't get re-elected.

CIA Admits Contractors Involved in Waterboarding

Earlier this month CIA Director Michael Hayden testified before Congress and admitted private contractors were employed to waterboard al Qaeda detainees.

According to a Wall Street Journal article posted on CorpWatch:

"CIA Director Michael V. Hayden was asked whether contractors were involved in waterboarding al Qaeda detainees. He replied: 'I'm not sure of the specifics. I'll give you a tentative answer: I believe so.' An agency spokesman declined to clarify the answer.

According to two current and former intelligence officials, the use of contracting at the CIA's secret sites increased quickly in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, in part because the CIA had little experience in detentions and interrogation. Using nongovernment employees also helped maintain a low profile, they said. The sites were designed to handle only the most sensitive detainees."

So not only is the U.S. goverment outsourcing the war and its disastrous aftermath to private companies, it's even outsourcing the torture of prisoners. Then, the CIA destroys the evidence. Convenient.
