FORA.tv's Trevar Mazza shares his final day at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, as he makes his way to Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium for Barack Obama's acceptance speech.

Full disclosure: At FORA.tv, we pride ourselves in our ability to cover all shades of political opinion. Views and opinions of individual FORA.tv staff members are not in any way meant to represent the opinions of FORA.tv. To that end, we should note that when he's off the clock, Trevar is an enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama - as is probably obvious from the video.

As the web changes, so do the best methods of marketing your products online and gaining increased exposure for your websites and blogs. While Web 2.0 technologies are now well established on the internet, many of the promotional possibilities they offer are still being explored. In this article, I look at how Web 2.0 can help you market and promote your product.

One of the chief advantages of Web 2.0 promotions is that they can be absolutely free or very, very cheap. But, there's a trade off. Instead of paying, you'll be spending more time planning and executing your marketing strategies.

Some Web 2.0 technologies have been around for quite a while now, while others have established themselves more recently. One of the first Web 2.0 technologies to come on stream was the blog. Blogs set themselves apart from traditional websites in that users could reply to blog posts and interact with the blog owner.

Blogs are easy and cheap to set up and are used by almost every business—no matter what size—to help promote products. A blog will allow you to keep readers informed about your products and can be a good opportunity to share your views and thoughts on related areas. And because potential and existing customers can interact with you, a blog can be used as a customer service tool.

Blogging is not what it used to be. Gone are the days of the simple blog with posts and comments, and maybe a few images here and there. A few years ago we wowed at the facility for users to leave comments, and at extra features like archives and blogrolls—or links.

However, the modern blog is a different animal. It is true that blogging has become significantly more competitive as a means to make an income than it was a few years ago. Of the millions of blogs out there, only a small percent earn a significant income for their owners.

However, on the other hand, the fast changing world of Web 2.0 technology has meant that blogs are offering new and exciting ways of promoting yourself, your websites, and your products.

While, a blog is an effective means of Web 2.0 promotion in itself, all kinds of Web 2.0 technologies you can integrate with your blog to make it stand out from the crowd an help your blog to market itself.

There are many tools for designing and adding content to your blog. Arguably the most popular is WordPress, which can make setting up a well-designed, sophisticated blog a pretty simple process.

Blogging produced a revolution in the business of online marketing. While blogging is a great Web 2.0 marketing tool for any business, it has become, especially for new, shoestring budget start-ups, a vital means to getting website traffic.

The following are ways blogging has helped level the playing field between well established, corporate giants and small businesses just starting out.

Setting up a Blog is Fast, Free & Easy

There was a time when setting up a business online wasn't free. Many businesses were at the mercy of the technologically savvy — the "gurus" who knew design. Then the concept of "free" became synonymous with blogging. Now, it's incomprehensible to think otherwise.

For startup businesses, blogs provide a great alternative to quickly and affordably setting up an online presence. There's no technical knowledge required other than basic internet skills.

With so many blog building tools and software freely available, creating a blog is faster and easier than setting up a web site. There's no need to send yourself, or staff, to expensive training programs or seminars. Once you've decided which software and tools you'd like to use, it will usually take less than ten minutes to

Blogging for business is the new marketing mantra. But do you know why blogging is good for your business? Do you know how it affects your bottom line?

Take a look at why blogging is a win-win situation for businesses as well as for their customers.

Why Your Business Should Have a Blog

Blogs are one of the best ways to broadcast information and establish credibility. Whether your posts include industry news or whether you provide valuable insider information, your audience will begin to label you as an expert. They will also begin to see you as a business that is interested in its community rather than just commercial activities.

One of the most surprising benefits to blogging is getting media attention. Traditionally, a business would send a press release to media outlets announcing "major" news then hope they get featured. But a press release is just another form of interruption marketing. Journalists are bombarded with press releases. Most are simply promotional pieces disguised as news.

If you are blogging interesting, informative, and thought provoking ideas, the media will come looking for you, without you having to pitch them. Journalists are looking for experts that know what they're talking about.

Because of instant syndication, blogging is the preferred method to distribute content quickly, establish yourself as an expert, and get featured by the media.

you've built a blog, your primary focus should be in developing a solid readership. Now that you have your blog running, you've been adding quality content, and you've been engaging your readers, what do you do now?

You need to spend more time promoting your blog. When you market your blog, you're marketing yourself. You can't hide behind a faceless company which makes marketing so much more collaborative and difficult at the same time.

Think of these six methods as a way of reaching out to your audiences and saying, "This is who I am. Come on over and let's chat."

With well over 100 million blogs online, it's certainly not easy to get noticed. But blogging is inherently SEO friendly. Why? Because search engines look for fresh content. And if you're using your blog correctly (i.e. you're updating it consistenly) then getting great SEO results is just a matter of time.

One good way to differentiate yourself is to find a niche. Even if you're in a crowded industry, you have to search out niches within that industry.

This is where SEO comes in. The first thing you must do is target the keywords your customers, or potential customers, are using to find solutions in your industry. Keywords are, well, key. You want to select keywords that are popular and relevant to your site. At the same time, you don't want to target what I call crowded keyword markets.

For example, let's say you're a shoe seller. Now, the keyword "shoes" is big...too big. Even if you blogged for years you probably wouldn't be able to compete for that term. Look at your shoe business and find something you can differentiate yourself with. Are you the largest shoe seller in the county? Do you make custom boots? This may seem trivial but it's absolutely necessary if you want your blog to rank well in the search engines.

You can no longer use the excuse that setting up a blog is too hard. Plenty of blogging software is available easily, and mostly free, taking the guesswork out of blog-building.

Today, assembling a blog is simple. What's even more important, and much harder, is marketing your blog. To be successful, you must strengthen your marketing ability.

You might be able to entice visitors to your website initially, but how will you keep them coming back for more. Successful blog marketing helps you get higher search engine rankings, gain valuable links and increase the traffic to your site.

Use to following tips to get your blog on the right marketing track.

Tip #1- RSS Your Blog

Just because your blog is live, don't assume visitors know about it. Imagine your blog is a nice sized chalk board sitting in your basement. How do you get it out of the basement and onto the sidewalk? That's where RSS feeds come into play. RSS simply allows others to syndicate content from your blog to their blog or website. Using RSS feeds to promote your blog is an effective way to get your content noticed.

Video blogger and journalist Josh Wolf argues for greater transparency in politics and the media.

-----

"Freedom of the Blog," with Josh Wolf in conversation with Doug Sovern.

Josh Wolf, 25 year old video blogger, freelance journalist, and San Francisco mayoral candidate, served 226 days in prison after refusing to turn over a collection of videos of an anti-G8 anarchist protest to a Federal district court. Wolf, who was awarded the Journalist of the Year award by the Society of Professional Journalists in 2006, is considered by some a journalistic martyr, by others an "alleged journalist". Come hear his thoughts on freedom of the press in an age of technology, what defines a journalist and other issues.- Commonwealth Club of California

Joshua Wolf is an American video blogger and freelance journalist who was jailed by a Federal district court on August 1, 2006 for refusing to turn over a collection of videotapes he recorded during a July 2005 demonstration in San Francisco, California. Wolf served 226 days in prison at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, California, longer than any other journalist in U.S. history has served for protecting source materials. With permission from the prosecution, U.S. District Judge William Alsup ordered Wolf's release on April 3, 2007. On July 4, 2007, Wolf announced that he has filed a declaration of intent to run for mayor of San Francisco against incumbent Gavin Newsom.

Daniel Lyons, aka Fake Steve Jobs, discusses the origins of his satirical alter ego.

-----

Daniel Lyons, aka Fake Steve Jobs, talks about his book Options and blog "The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs" written by his alter ego.

The New York Times recently outed Forbes reporter Dan Lyons as Fake Steve Jobs. Who is Fake Steve Jobs, you ask? He's the guy who started the blog "The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs", which has been the subject of water cooler talk from Silicon Valley to Washington DC for the past year. But Lyons is also a fiction writer who has gotten the papal blessing (i.e., a best young novelist nod) from Granta, and in his new book OPTION$ he uses the persons and voice that he created on the blog to bring us into a world where an iPod-loving, T'ai Chi-practicing, Reed College dropout who just happens to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company gets a little, you know, creative when it comes to "dating".

Fake Steve is, in his off-hours, a senior editor at Forbes and the author of a novel, Dog Days and a collection of stories, The Last Good Man. The recipient of both a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Literary Fellowship and the somewhat notorious Playboy College Fiction Prize, he was names one of the "Fabulous 52" in the 1996 Best Young American Novelists competition sponsored by Granta. Among the readers of Dan's blog, fakesteve.blogspot.com, is Real Steve Jobs, who has called it "pretty funny." - Cody's Books
