Following unprecedented checks on Amtrak and Greyhound buses, the U.S. border patrol is forging ahead with surprise raids on domestic ferry runs from the San Juan Islands. So far agents have arrested over 50 people, 49 of them Latino, suspected of being "illegal immigrants" and turned them over to the ICE.

But besides capturing alleged illegal immigrants and a few citizens in possession of pot, they are also catching heat from islanders and tourists alike. Howard Rosenfeld, San Juan County council chairman, has expressed worries about the culture of fear that is putting off tourists.

"Most people just don't like it. It promotes a culture of fear. Anyone who acknowledges they are not an American gets taken aside. That creates a delay, and that's a disincentive for tourists to come and visit here."

Border Patrol: ICE targeting Amtrak, Greyhound

This news is a bit old but serves as a reminder for anyone who is unaware: If you are an undocumented immigrant traveling during these holidays or anytime soon between New York and Chicago, avoid Amtrak and Greyhound as there have been reports of undocumented students being apprehended and detained by the ICE.

Apparently, ICE is concerned about illegal immigrants and terrorists coming into the United States via the Canadian border and the Amtrak line from Chicago to New York cuts quite close to the Northern border.

U.S. Attorney Randall Caudle states that under the Fifth Amendment of the United States (which applies even to non-citizens due to selective incorporation through the 14th amendment), individuals do not have to present ID to border patrol and ICE officers within the United States. In effect, we are violating one set of laws to enforce another set of laws--talk about sending mixed messages.

Afghan border police battle a lack of equipment - 20 May 08

The southern region of Afghanistan is at the centre of Taliban-led operations.

More than 1,200 people, mostly anti-government fighters, have died there so far this year.

But Afghanistan's border police are lacking basic equipment to tame the Taliban.

Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo travelled with Afghan police on patrol in the south and sent this report.

DREAMers: Barking at a dog can lead to deportation

Victor Napoles (21), an undocumented immigrant, is facing deportation to Mexico after barking back at the dog of a border patrol agent at a traffic light.

What started off as a late-night silly joke a year ago has turned into a nightmare for a fellow DREAMer and his family. Napoles, who has been fighting his deportation case for almost a year now, says that he had no idea that such a small act could lead to such drastic consequences.

"I was taking my friend home and was at a stoplight when an unmarked Durango drove up next to me," Napoles said. "The dog in the car started barking at me and I thought, 'Why not?' and barked back. I had no idea it was a Border Patrol's dog." Shortly after the light turned green and Napoles drove away, he noticed flashing police lights and pulled over. "The first thing the officer said was, 'Why were you barking at my dog?'" Napoles said. "I was dumbfounded."
