<p><p>Celebrated Actor and filmmaker John Cusack will be our special guest this Friday to discuss an issue neither presidential candidate is talking about: war profiteering. <em><a href="http://www.myspace.com/johncusack">War, Inc.</a>,</em> Cusack's latest film which he starred in and co-wrote with Jeremy Pikser and Mark Leyner, satirized the outsourcing of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. <p><p>"If there's limitation to the transparency of anybody's medical records, it always raises the suspicion, 'What are they hiding?'..." Those were the words of Dr. Richard Sagebiel,<span> co-director of the UCSF Melanoma Clinic and yesterday's special guest on </span><em><a href="http://meetthebloggers.org/">Meet the Bloggers</a></em><span>. Dr. Sagebiel was one of over 2,750 doctors who <a href="http://therealmccain.com/doctors/">signed the open letter</a> urging John McCain to provide full disclosure of his medical records. And really, "What are they hiding?" is the question we need to be asking ourselves again and again as this story unfolds.</span></p><p>What is McCain hiding? He released a portion of his medical records back in May under extremely restricted circumstances, allowing a handful of hand-picked reporters to view nearly 1,200 pages for just three hours, without the use of the Internet, cell phones, or copying equipment. As <em>The Nation's</em> Ari Melber pointed out during yesterday's show, most of these journalists were not medical experts. But even if they were, this was an insufficient amount of time to examine so many pages of McCain's health history. That's why CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta--one of the journalists who got to see this portion of medical records--told Sam Stein at The Huffington Post that McCain's lack of candor amounted to "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/30/new-urgency-over-mccain-m_n_130298.html">cloak and dagger</a>" secrecy. </p><p>And why is the corporate press censoring any discussion about McCain's medical records? Yesterday's <em>Meet the Bloggers</em> came in part because both CNN and MSNBC refused to air <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHvJPGnkQxE">Brave New PAC's ad</a> about McCain's record secrecy. Both complained about the graphic images in the ad--images that both networks aired earlier this year. Even more amazingly, MSNBC actually banned the ad after shock jocks <a href="../../blog/55098-why-is-the-corporate-press-censoring-attempts-to-discuss-mccain-s-health-records">Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh self-righteously ranted about it</a>. </p></p>

<p><p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's appearance on a special <a href="http://meetthebloggers.org/"><em>Meet the Bloggers</em></a> yesterday proved two things: not only can politicians work together to fix one of the worst economic crises in our nation's history, but they can do this while continuing to speak to the American people, keeping us informed about what's happening in the halls of Congress. </p><p>Unlike Senator John McCain, who suspended his campaign and public appearances yesterday because he claimed Washington couldn't fix this financial crisis without his "economic expertise," Speaker Pelosi spoke candidly with show host Cenk Uygur about whether the Bush-Paulson bailout plan would work. Though Speaker Pelosi stressed the need for a bipartisan solution to solve the current crisis, she said the "<a href="../../blog/54572-meet-the-bloggers-nancy-pelosi-says-party-is-over-for-republicans">party is over</a>" for Republicans like McCain who have pushed for the deregulation that led to this mess in the first place. Speaker Pelosi called the expansive power for Treasury Secretary Paulson laid out by the bailout plan "almost laughable"; she questioned the price tag and time frame of the bailout; and she claimed President Bush ought to give the American people an apology for his bankrupt economic policies during his nationally televised speech last night. </p><p>McCain, meanwhile, was busy <a href="../../blog/54615-letterman-brutally-mocks-mccain-for-late-show-cancellation">incurring the mocking wrath of David Letterman</a> for canceling his appearance on "The Late Show" yesterday, only to appear in an interview with CBS's Katie Couric instead. (Perhaps McCain could have continued conducting interviews from Washington via the Internet like Pelosi, if only he knew how to use it!) McCain's "suspension" of his campaign was a cheap political ploy, clearly aimed at preventing him from <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/23/AR2008092303667_pf.html">slipping further in the polls</a> because of a crisis he and his aides like <a href="http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters/363854/">Rick Davis</a> and <a href="http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080922/scheer">Phil Gramm</a> helped create. Why else would he suddenly be so inclined to show up in Congress when he has been <a href="http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/senate/vote-missers/">the most absent member of the Senate</a>? </p></p>

<p><p>While soaring gas prices and the energy crisis are major concerns for Americans, this economic debate is inextricably linked to the environment. How can we get our country off a crippling dependence on costly oil without considering environmentally safe energy alternatives? This was the topic of Friday's <em>Meet the Bloggers</em>, in which environmental journalist <a href="http://simransethi.com/">Simran Sethi </a>spoke with show host Cenk Uygur about sustainability, as well as the battle between Big Oil and innovation. </p><p>Sethi addressed the urgent need to <a href="../../blog/53936-meet-the-bloggers-simran-sethi-calls-for-a-green-economy">create a green economy</a>, and she recommended tapping into the diversity of natural resources in our country. Sethi suggested that energy independence is possible if adequate measures are taken immediately, which is why the upcoming election is all the more crucial. </p><p>Friday's show came in conjunction with the launch of our video, <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3ecA2L-VuQ&amp;eurl=http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/53870-mccain-s-green-economy-drill-baby-drill">McCain's Green Economy: Drill, Baby, Drill</a></em>, which we partnered with the <a href="http://www.lcv.org/">League of Conservation Voters</a> to produce. As the title suggests, <em>Drill, Baby, Drill</em> reveals McCain's deep ties to Big Oil. Specifically, McCain has <a href="http://mccainsource.com/corruption?id=0014">over 22 Big Oil lobbyists advising him</a>, and he received over $1 million dollars from Big Oil for his recent flip-flop on off-shore drilling. But as <em>Meet the Bloggers</em> guests Kevin Grandia (<a href="http://desmogblog.com/">DeSmogBlog.com</a>), Brad Johnson (<a href="http://thinkprogress.org/">ThinkProgress.org</a>) and Kate Sheppard (<a href="http://grist.org/">Grist.org</a>) pointed out, McCain's abysmal environmental record goes far beyond his recent flip-flops. </p></p>

<p><p>When you're talking about the rights of workers and the urgent need to help them unionize, there's no better person to talk to than <a href="../../blog/53048-meet-the-bloggers-andy-stern-can-restore-the-middle-class">SEIU President Andy Stern</a>. On yesterday's <em>Meet the Bloggers</em>, Stern was our special guest to discuss the <a href="http://freechoiceact.org/petition/">Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)</a>, a vital piece of legislation that, if passed, will go a long way toward restoring the middle class in our country. EFCA would enable workers to unionize, allowing them to demand fairer wages and much needed benefits like health insurance. </p><p>EFCA would bring balance to the work place. As Michael Whitney of <a href="http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/">American Rights at Work</a> indicated during the show, this bill would effectively reduce the <a href="../../blog/50718-ceos-vs-minimum-wage-earners-guess-how-much-they-make">colossal disparity</a> between Fortune 500 CEOs making an average of $6,153 an hour and the majority of workers earning an hourly federal minimum wage of $6.55. What's more, EFCA would give workers a voice when it comes to negotiating jobs and contracts, which, as <a href="http://www.jackandjillpolitics.com/">JackandJillPolitics.com</a> blogger Baratunde Thurston pointed out, is especially important for minority workers. And with mega employers like Wal-Mart resorting to unionbusting tactics and electioneering in order to prevent their employees from supporting pro-union candidates, the time to support EFCA is critical. </p><p>That's why we dedicated our entire show to this issue, and that's why we partnered with American Rights at Work to create a new video called <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlbfpzC_-I0">Your New Job</a></em>, as well as a <a href="http://www.freechoiceact.org/page/s/yournewjob?source=bnf0908">petition to help EFCA pass</a>. <p><p>The corporate press has been in bed with John McCain for years. What's more, whenever the GOP smells the slightest whiff of objectivity from the media, they immediately cry foul. That was the discussion of this week's <em><a href="http://meetthebloggers.org/">Meet the Bloggers</a></em>, in which punk rock icon, actor, and spoken word artist Henry Rollins filled in admirably for Cenk Uygur, who was at the Republican National Convention. Rollins led a charged, insightful conversation with bloggers Jonathan Kim (<a href="http://foxattacks.com/">FOX Attacks!</a>), Liliana Segura (<a href="http://www.alternet.org/">AlterNet.org</a>) and Paul Waldman (<a href="http://www.mediamattes.org/">Media Matters</a>) about the ridiculous bias we've seen from FOX News and the mainstream media throughout this election.</p><p>Waldman, who co-authored <a href="http://mediamattersaction.org/freeride/"><em>Free Ride: John McCain and the Media</em></a> with David Brock, talked about all the ways in which the McCain campaign and the GOP have manipulated the media. If you need any proof, just watch the heated exchange between CNN's Campbell Brown and McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds featured in this segment. As Rollins and Waldman pointed out, Bounds jumped down Brown's throat when she asked him to name one instance of real foreign policy experience from McCain's VP pick Sarah Palin. Once Bounds exhausted his talking points, he went on the defensive, accusing Brown of belittling Palin. But as Waldman concluded, Brown was simply doing her job, something not enough journalists are doing these days. </p><p>Of course, the worst perpetrators of media bias are the folks at FOX News. What sparked the idea for yesterday's show was Brave New Films' latest video, <a href="../../blog/51974-fox-attacks-obama-just-like-kerry">FOX Attacks Obama Just Like Kerry</a>, which documents all the ways in which FOX has been reusing the same smears and distortions of John Kerry from 2004 to malign Barack Obama. Jonathan Kim, who runs our <a href="http://foxattacks.com/">FOX Attacks!</a> blog and created this latest video, talked with Rollins about the "<a href="../../blog/52071-meet-the-bloggers-henry-rollins-and-jonathan-kim-on-the-harmful-fox-effect">FOX effect</a>." </p></p>
