His daughter died of leukemia and he tried for years to uncover the the truth. Thousands of Marine families who lived at Camp Lejeune over three decades drank and bathed in water contaminated with toxins as much as 40 times over today&#39;s safety standard. Finally on June 12, 2007 a Congressional committee heard the testimony from him and other victims of the contamination. He is the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee and a senior member of the Appropriations and Veterans Affairs Committees. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, overseeing federal funding for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and many education programs. </p> <p>He has also served as chairman of the Senate's intelligence committee.
