Vanderbilt examines the perceptual limits and cognitive underpinnings that make us worse drivers than we think we are.

He demonstrates why plans to protect pedestrians from cars often lead to more accidents. GORDON TROWBRIDGE: [...] There are a number of proposals making the rounds in Congress right now for loan guarantees that would help the auto industry that would help the auto industry--there are a number of analysts who believe those guarantees are crucial to keeping the possibility of bankruptcy at bay for those companies. Among the people who's working on that--those proposals--is Congressman Upton, who's a close ally of yours. I wonder if you had a chance to look at any of those proposals, and whether or not you support them?

JOHN MCCAIN: Could I say I have heard many of those proposals. But I've also had meetings, as you know, with the Big 3 automakers. And they are confident with the new hybrids, with flex fuels, and other technological advances-- which will not only help the auto industry but create tens of thousands of jobs throughout Michigan and the heartland of America--that they can succeed. So, in all due respect, I worry a little bit about us predicting failure on the part of the auto makers when they're striving mightily--having made agreements between management and labor on health care issues and pensions--that they're expressing to me their confidence in success with the adaptation of new technology. Now I will be glad to consider proposals to help the auto industry, including investing in pure research and development, a $5,000 tax credit for someone who purchases one of these new automobiles that are either hybrid or electric or flex fuels or others. But at the moment, for us to somehow predict the doom of the auto industry in America, and certainly the Big 3, I think is frankly not timely at this time. And I don't want it to be a self-fulfilling promise.

Water Fuel: Fox News does Cover-up Story

As you have probably already seen Fox26 in Houston, TX did a story on Denny Klein a couple of years ago. That story has since made it way around the world via youtube and other video sites. I saw the story when it aired and directed many friends to the video on youtube. Then not too long ago I saw a teaser for a related story about turning your car into a water burning hybrid. I truly thought they were about to do another story about the technology of using water as a fuel. That didn't turn out to be the case. They had Scotty Kilmer a quack mechanic who does a weekend segment on a different Houston News station come on as their "expert" to debunk all of this HHO stuff.
When I saw the story I was stunned. It totally ignored the previous story that I saw. So I decided to do a little research to see if there was more info on the web. That's when I found out that the website they're showing in the news report appears to be Denny Klein's website.(He's the guy interviewed in the first story. Who says in that story that the car could run on water exclusively, but is currently running as a gas/water hybrid just like the plans say.)
Also, if the person controlling the mouse on that webpage in the story would have scrolled down a bit, you would have seen the original story THEY did that has now become so popular on youtube.(Because it's embedded on the bottom of the page they're on.)
This debunking story convinced me to do my own personal test of this by going to the website listed in the report and buying the information to build my own Water Hybrid.
I'll post back when I finish with my own results.

How are rising gas prices affecting household budgets? Is there an end in sight to the middle-class squeeze? And how can we ease the strain on America's families? Center for American Progress Senior Fellow Christian Weller answers the call in the latest installment of CAP's ASK THE EXPERT series.

This summer is the summer of pain. Families across America are struggling with higher prices for gas and food along with record unemployment rates, flat wages, and the deepening housing crisis. In April 2008, gasoline prices easily shattered an inflation-adjusted record that had stood since March 1981, and they have only continued to soar since then, hitting new record highs almost weekly. Ever-higher food prices, which rose 22.7 percent from March 2001 to April 2008, are taking another bite out of families' wallets.

The aggregate figures show that this is not an isolated case:

Gasoline spending currently rivals record highs from the early 1980s. In the first quarter of 2008, families spent, on average, 4.0 percent of their after-tax income on gasoline, the highest level since the fourth quarter of 1983.

Higher gasoline expenditures are especially painful to people in rural areas. Families living in rural areas have an average commute to work that is four miles greater than urban families. Also, in 2006, rural households spent 6.8 percent of their average annual expenditures on gasoline and motor oil, while urban households spent 4.4 percent.

Increased gasoline expenditures disproportionately affect lower-income families. The second lowest income quintile devoted 5.4 percent of their average annual expenditures to gasoline and motor oil in 2006, while the highest income quintile devoted just 3.7 percent.

Minorities are particularly affected by soaring prices at the pump. In 2006, Hispanic households devoted 5.4 percent of their average annual expenditures to gasoline and motor oil purchases, while black households devoted 5.0 percent, and white households devoted 4.5 percent.

Families are faced with the challenge of trying to make adjustments to their budgets as prices rise and incomes fall. But personal savings are already close to zero, and families have borrowed record amounts to make ends meet in recent years. That leaves little room to shift around expenses and no savings to dip into as times are getting tough. It also makes borrowing more money difficult, since many families already have large bills to pay to their creditors.

Families will therefore have to cut back on other spending as gasoline and food prices soar.
