Cluster bombs at a glance
By The Associated Press -- 1 day ago

WHAT IS A CLUSTER BOMB?: Fired by artillery or dropped by aircraft, cluster bombs are canisters that open in flight and eject dozens or hundreds of "bomblets" across a wide area, typically the size of one or two football fields. Bomblets are small metallic spheres or cylinders that can be as small as a flashlight battery, with about the same force as a hand grenade. The weapon is designed to slow or halt an enemy army by destroying or disabling troops and vehicles over a wide area in a single attack.

___

DANGERS: An exploding bomblet sends jagged shrapnel through the air much like grenades and mines. It can kill or maim someone within 10 to 50 yards. Bomblets can be set to explode above ground or on the ground with a time delay. Usually they are set to detonate on impact, but 5 percent to 25 percent typically fail to explode, essentially creating minefields wherever they land. The unexploded "duds" are volatile and can detonate if disturbed.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discusses the long-term implications of Chinese economic and political growth for United States security.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

Warren, MI 07/18/08

TRANSCRIPT:
AUDIENCE MEMBER: [...] My concern with the free trade is when we source to a Canadian supplier who was our tier one source, and I have a part that has three or four pieces that go together. Canadian law states that they must go to a Canadian source in order to purchase their secondary pieces that go on that part. Well, that doesn't seem fair trade to me then they're not allowed to come to the US and get a better price so that we can have a reduction in the part that I'm buying for my vehicle. What would you do to help us in that area for free trade?
JOHN MCCAIN: "I would take them to the arbitration that is supposed to be part of our free trade agreement -- the North American Free Trade Agreement - where their violations, there's been cases concerning Canadian lumber and there's been other cases. I would take them right to those arbitration panels.
"I think it also maybe in violation to the WTO agreement, but I'm not that much of an expert. But this seems to me clearly in violation of the agreement that we made that we would have free and open markets for all of our products between our two countries.

"I just want to assure you, I believe in free trade. But I don't believe in the abuse of free trade. I don't believe that people should have special advantages over American workers and over American products. And I will exercise those capabilities that I have in order to reach arbitration and reach fairness and justice for American workers and American products.
"And I also want to tell you the next China, the next toy that comes in from China with arsenic on it may poison our young children will be the last toy that came into the United States of America from China."

Maarten Troost visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Lost on Planet China: The Strange and True Story of One Man's Attempt to Understand the World's Most Mystifying Nation, or How He Became Comfortable Eating Live Squid." This event took place on July 16, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series.

Lost on Planet China finds Troost dodging deadly drivers in Shanghai; eating Yak in Tibet; deciphering restaurant menus (offering local favorites such as Cattle Penis with Garlic); visiting with Chairman Mao (still dead, very orange); and hiking (with 80,000 other people) up Tai Shan, China's most revered mountain. But in addition to his trademark gonzo adventures, the book also delivers a telling look at a vast and complex country on the brink of transformation that will soon shape the way we all work, live, and think. As Troost shows, while we may be familiar with Yao Ming or dim sum or the cheap, plastic products that line the shelves of every store, the real China remains a world—indeed, a planet--unto itself.

Maarten Troost brings China to life as you've never seen it before, and his insightful, rip-roaringly funny narrative proves that once again he is one of the most entertaining and insightful armchair travel companions around.

J. MAARTEN TROOST is the author of Getting Stoned with Savages and The Sex Lives of Cannibals. His essays have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, and the Prague Post. He spent two years in Kiribati in the Equatorial Pacific and upon his return was hired as a consultant by the World Bank. After several years in Fiji and Vanuatu, he recently relocated to the U.S. and now lives with his wife and two sons in California.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: "One of my biggest concerns is our sovereignty. We seem sometimes all too willing to turn over our decision-making processes to someone like the U.N. [...]"

JOHN MCCAIN: "[...] You have a very dangerous situation [in Iran]. What should be happening at the United Nations is the United Nations Security Council enacting vigorous, tough sanctions, which would then modify Iranian behavior. But what happens [...]? The Russians will block meaningful action. [...]

"But you've got other countries, like India and China, who are growing and coming on the world stage. And it seems to me that we ought to work more closely with our allies [...]

"My friends, things are not going the way we want them to in Afghanistan [...] But at least we are there with a number of other countries, who are sending their young people to serve as well. [...] And we have to urge more of our friends and more of our allies, particularly within NATO, to dispatch more troops and help out in a lot more ways. [...]"

Complete video at: fora.tv

Mark Leonard, Executive Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations, discusses the current state of democratic reforms in China, arguing that experimentation with democracy may have the result of making the Chinese one-party state stronger rather than weaker.

-----

The extraordinary economic growth and reemergence of China on the world stage has underscored how little is really known about this rising power. China is clearly a global player that will impact international relations throughout the twenty-first century.

Mark Leonard's What Does China Think? explores Chinese politics and society and analyzes their possible effects on the world at large - World Affairs Council of Washington, DC

Mark Leonard is the Executive Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. He is also an adviser to companies and governments on China as well as Middle East reform.
Previously, Mark Leonard was the Director of Foreign Policy at the London-based Centre for European Reform, and was a transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund in the United States.

Mr. Leonard has authored two books and has written several articles on international affairs in periodicals including The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and The International Herald Tribune.
