Australian Senator Bob Brown argues that China's record on human rights holds it in violation of the Olympic Charter - and therefore, not fit to hold the Olympic Games.

-----

Prince Charles has declined to attend the Beijing games as a protest against perceived human rights abuses. Steven Spielberg heads a list of celebrities urging others to stay away. There has been unprecedented worldwide public protest over China's human rights abuses.

However, are China’s failings any greater than those of other nations that have hosted the Olympics? What of China's great strengths -- do they count for nothing? Where does the balance lie?

Should sport be 'quarantined' from the politics of such matters? And in any case, who are we to judge such matters when there are so many problems in our own backyard? - Intelligence Squared Australia

Senator Bob Brown has been a life-long activist and has become a leading voice for human rights in Australia. Earlier this year, his "Tibet Motion," calling for the Australian Government to take reasonable action against repression of Tibetan people by China, passed the Senate without dissent.

He has long been involved in conservation, and in 1986, he was shot at and assaulted during logging protests. He became the director of the Wilderness Society, which organised the blockade of the dam-works on Tasmania's wild Franklin River in 1982, where he was arrested and spent nineteen days in Risdon Prison. While serving in the Tasmanian parliament, he successfully campaigned for a large increase in the protected wilderness areas.

Bob Brown was a driving force in forming the Australian Greens in 1992. He has spoken widely for the rights of the Tibetan people and against human rights abuses within China.

Australian Journalist Hamish McDonald contrasts the outpouring of protest over the Beijing Olympic Games to silence in previous years - such as the 1904 games in St. Louis, Missouri - when other questionable human rights issues were largely ignored by the international community.

Hamish McDonald has spent twenty of his thirty-five years in journalism based in Asia - in Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, and China, where he was the correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald based in Beijing.

He is currently the Asia-Pacific editor for the Sydney Morning Herald. He has been political editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review. He is the author of several books.

Human Rights Watch Media Director Minky Worden discusses whether recent international attention due to environmental disasters, economic growth, and the 2008 Olympics has affected China's positions on human rights.

-----

As human rights emerge as a central concern around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China's Great Leap: The Beijing Games and Olympian Human Rights Challenges examines China in transition today.

When Beijing first sought to host the Olympics, China was still recovering from the upheavals of Maoist rule and adapting to a market revolution. How are China’s leaders managing the Olympic process and the internal and external pressures for reform the Games are creating?

China's Great Leap illuminates China's recent history through voices of leading China experts, and points to key areas for future reform. Join the book's editor, Minky Worden, and contributing writers Scott Greathead and Emily Parker for an evening of discussion, moderated by Jamie Metzl, Executive Vice President of the Asia Society - Asia Society

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discusses the long-term implications of Chinese economic and political growth for United States security.

-----

Henry Kissinger discusses war and more with Peter Robinson as part of the Hoover Institution's interview series, Uncommon Knowledge.

War and the media - the two have not partnered so well since Vietnam. But in the days of the Internet, conservative talk radio, and Fox News, has the dynamic changed?

Kissinger says only a bit, and that the media remain heavily biased against military action.

Additionally, the 1960s concept that the U.S. government is somehow an evil enterprise is alive and well.

In this environment, Kissinger says our leaders need to present a clearer and more educated vision of the American role in the world - Hoover Institution

Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th Secretary of State of the United States from 1973 to 1977, continuing to hold the position of Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs which he first assumed in 1969 until 1975. After leaving government service, he founded Kissinger Associates, an international consulting firm, of which he is chairman.

Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge. Robinson is also the author of three books: How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life; It's My Party: A Republican's Messy Love Affair with the GOP; and the best-selling business book Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MB.

Mark Leonard, Executive Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations, discusses the current state of democratic reforms in China, arguing that experimentation with democracy may have the result of making the Chinese one-party state stronger rather than weaker.

-----

The extraordinary economic growth and reemergence of China on the world stage has underscored how little is really known about this rising power. China is clearly a global player that will impact international relations throughout the twenty-first century.

Mark Leonard's What Does China Think? explores Chinese politics and society and analyzes their possible effects on the world at large - World Affairs Council of Washington, DC

Mark Leonard is the Executive Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations. He is also an adviser to companies and governments on China as well as Middle East reform.
Previously, Mark Leonard was the Director of Foreign Policy at the London-based Centre for European Reform, and was a transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund in the United States.

Mr. Leonard has authored two books and has written several articles on international affairs in periodicals including The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and The International Herald Tribune.

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Anderson, SC 11/27/07

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "If the Chinese want to block action in Darfur, we should act together, if the Russians want to continue to block action to stop the Iranians from developing nuclear weapons we should act together, and impose trade, economic, diplomatic, banking, financial, other sanctions on Iran to try to bring them around to stopping what they're doing. ISo, I would gather these nations, it may not be as formal as some other but I would get these nations together . . . major European financial institutions are extending unlimited lines of credit to Iran; obviously because they're gonna get paid back with oil. If we really put up severe, severe restrictions on Iran it might have some beneficial effect. At least it ought to be tried. The only way I think we're gonna be effective is without going to the UN Security Council."
