John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Kansas City, MO 07/17/08

TRANSCRIPTION:
QUESTIONER: First of all, I would encourage everyone standing here, when you're walking around the city, in your supermarkets, whatever. If you see an American G.I. with his uniform on walk up to him, shake his hand, say thank you for what you've done for this country.

[Applause]

MCCAIN: Could I? Especially my dear friends, all of them, but don't forget the Missouri National Guard & Reserve. They have done magnificent things. Of citizen soldiers.

QUESTIONER: And I, myself personally, would like to shake your hand and thank you very much for what you did for us and for your service.

MCCAIN: Thank you. I remind you, I remind you that it doesn't take a lot of talent to get shot down.

[Laughter]

I was able to intercept a surface to air missile with my own airplane which is [inaudible, talking over each other]

QUESTIONER: What I wanted to ask you, Senator McCain is how do you feel on the stem cell research, and uh, just how do you feel on the stem cell research?

MCCAIN: Well, I feel that we should fund stem cell research. I do believe that there is now new technology advances called. On skin cell, skin cell research, which I hope will make this discussion an academic one. Because we're now making dramatic advances in technologies that we will not have to do stem cell research that other technologies will suffice. But at the moment, I support stem cell research because of the incredible potential that it has for curing some of the most terrible diseases that afflict mankind.

QUESTIONER (in wheelchair): "Senator McCain, [...] my friends and I—we are members of a group called ADAPT. We were in Washington in April. And 40 people with disabilities were arrested. We came to your office to ask you to support our national legislation, the Community Choice Act. What that would do is it would end the institutional bias and allow people with disabilities to choose where we would live and would receive services. [...] We come from all over the country [...] Will you sign on to support the Community Choice Act?

JOHN MCCAIN: "I will not because I don't think that it's the right kind of legislation. [...] The Community Choice Act is not a piece of the legislation that I support [...]"

Written during Reagan's reign, this still has alarming relevance to today's political events; in fact, Dubya's propagation of the worst of the Reagan Era hypocrisies makes the song even more dismayingly true than it was nearly thirty years ago. Be warned, the ironic persona of the piece does use the "N-word" and other abusive epithets to make his point about the entitlements of the "haves" vs. the duly undeserving "have-nots." He would be right at home on Fox News.

The Greatest threat to Democracy is Hypocrisy.
Seek Truth! Speak Truth!
Tim McMullen

"The Governed's Mental Getcha'"
(A Pagan Refrain upon Reagan's Reign)

Oh, the Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out,
And the Niggers & Jews & the Chinks & the Krauts!
I know what I'm talkin' about:
The Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out!

All them Commie pinko's with their "pie in the sky"
Busin' kids to school;
"Everybody's equal!" you can hear 'em cry,
But I'm not such a fool.

If we let a nigger get a college degree,
And we open up the door,
That'll be the end of society
'Cause who'll shine the shoes
and who'll sweep the floor?

Oh, the Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out!
While the beaners and the faggots
And the libbers sit and pout.
I've got mine, so they can do without,
And the Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out!

The Equal Rights Amendment is another joke
That really makes me laugh;
Don't they know a woman's place is in the home,
Bein' the "better half"?
The half that does the cookin', and the cleanin',
and the ironin',
And the raisin' of the family;
For a maid she's actually overpaid
'Cause she gets her board and her room for free!
And if she's bored there's always me,
And a bottle a' beer, and a color TV—
What woman in her right mind wouldn't agree
That this is the way God meant it to be?

But, the Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out;
I know what I'm talkin' about!
I've got mine, so they can do without,
No, the Government'll getcha' if you don't watch out!

I got mine and it's only fair,
But now everybody wants to be a millionaire.
Equal rights? Equal Pay?
What ever happened to the "Good Ol' Days"?
The DAR? The NRA? Old John Birch and the KKK?
The 23rd Psalm? Vietnam? The Atom Bomb?
Ah-h-h, the "Good Ol' Days!"

But, the Government'll getcha'
If you don't watch out:
Tax your hard-earned dough
And then spread it all about.
And those nuclear freezers
And the crap they spout?
Naw, the Government'll getcha'
If you don't watch out!

It's time to show the world
What we're all about—
That we're not runnin' scared!
And if it ever comes to a world bout,
We won't be unprepared!
It's true the Russian bombs can
Blow the world to Hell
In thirty seconds flat,
But we can wipe the world out
In half the time,
So let 'em laugh at that!
For once we got our money's worth
'Cause every livin' creature
On the face of the earth
Can be killed twelve times...
The pentagon said!
I wonder what it's like to be
Twelve times dead?

But, the Government'll getcha'
If you don't watch out,
And those bleedin' heart liberals
Who picket and shout,
"No prayers! No guns!"
No fun, no doubt?
Whoa, the Government'll getcha'
If you don't watch out!

So gimme that Old Time Religion—
Gimme that Biblical Supervision—
Fear and inhibition, Lord,
They're good enough for me.
Gimme that Old Time Religion—
Gimme that Middle-income pigeon—
Confusion and derision, Lord,
They're good enough for me.
So gimme that Old Time Gospel Hour—
Gimme that Nuclear Missile Tower—
Who needs truth when you've got power?
God, it's great to be so free!

From the collection, All's Not Fair—The Voice for Choice and other Topical Songs. This song was written in 1989 during our participation in the coalition to thwart Randall Terry and Operation Rescue and their assault on women's health care and reproductive rights. It was performed at a Pro-Choice rally in Los Angeles in '89.

The Voice For Choice

My mommy is a doctor...
My mommy is a lawyer...
My mommy is an Indian Chief...
My mommy is an employer...

My sister is a waitress...
Mine's a big-rig driver...
My aunt is a housewife...
And mine is a deep-sea diver...

My mommy is a butcher...
My mommy is a baker...
My mommy is on relief...
And mine is an undertaker!

Chorus:
All our Mothers work hard all day!
All our Sisters earn all their pay!
All our Women sure pay their way
To do what they can do.
Our Sisters must raise their voice
Our Mothers can all rejoice!
All Women must Keep the Choice
To do what they can do.

My mommy has my father...
My aunt lives alone...
My grandma has a boyfriend...
My mom is always on the phone...

My mommy has a lover,
And she is my friend, too...
My mama has been abused,
And doesn't know what to do.

Chorus:
Add [Our Brothers must add their voice]

Sweet Sixteen was so naive;
He was her very first date.
"Nothing can happen!" was all he said,
But now she's three weeks late...

My mother raised a family;
Now she's a Grandmother.
She's done well by all her kids,
But she sure doesn't need another!

John McCain
Town Hall
Greendale, WI

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "Senator McCain, when you're elected president what sort of judges will you appoint? Will they be of the living constitution sort or of the strict constitutionalist?"

MCCAIN: "Thank you for the question. My friends, one of the things we have a tendency not to think as much as we should about is the appointment of judges; especially those to the United States Supreme Court. I don't know but some people—a lot of people say there could be as many as two or maybe even three retirements from the United States Supreme Court within a certain number of years.

"I don't know if it's true or not but always there is and so it's very important. And by the way, this is one of the big differences between me and Senator Obama. I happen to think that Justice Roberts and Justice Alito are two of the finest appointments to the United States Supreme Court because they had a record and now have a record of strictly interpreting the Constitution of the United States of America and not legislating from the bench and Senator Obama [...] voted against Justice Roberts and he wanted to filibuster against Justice Alito. So that's a very clear difference between myself and Senator Obama, my friends. Obviously he's for these activist judges and why anybody would vote against Justice Roberts—that's just not within my imagination."

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Alexandria, VA 04/01/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "Every child in America should be blessed with a teacher like I had. And to learn at institutions with high academic standards and codes of conduct that reinforce the values their parents try to import—impart to them. Many students, including here, do have that opportunity. But sadly, many do not. Too many. And government should be considered with their fate. I supported the No Child Left Behind Act because it recognizes that we can no longer accept high standards for some students and low standards for others. With honest reporting of student progress, we begin to see what is happening to students who were previously invisible to us. That is progress on its own. But we can and we must do better. If a failing school won't change, it shouldn't be beyond the reach of students to change their schools. Parents should be able to send their children to the school that best suits their needs, just as Cindy and I have been able to do, whether it's a public private or parochial school. The result will not be the demise of the public school system in America, but competition, competition that will help make public schools accountable and as successful as they should be in a country as great and as prosperous as ours."

John McCain
Town Hall Meeting
Alexandria, VA 04/01/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: "We should reward the best of them [teachers] with merit pay and encourage teachers who have lost their focus on the children they teach to find another line of work. Schools should compete to be innovative, flexible and student-centered institutions, not safe havens for the uninspired and the unaccountable....

I believe we should encourage military veterans to enter the teaching profession, and I've advocated the Troops to Teachers Act...

There is no reason on Earth that this great country should not possess the best education system in the world. We have let fear of uncertainty and a view that education's primary purpose is to protect jobs for teachers and administrators degrade our sense of the possible in America! There is no excuse for it!"

Silvia Henriquez of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health spoke at Breakthrough's public forum, "Why Can't America Have Human Rights?" at The Riverside Church in New York City on September 14, 2006. The event, co-sponsored by 70 organizations, attracted 600 guests, including community members, students, and leaders. The speakers and performers were united in their platform— we must take a stand against abuses and create a much needed human rights movement in the United States.

A poll of 1,200 women in March showed that about half of those who back Senator John McCain said they didn’t know enough about where he stands on abortion to determine whether he agrees with their own opinions on choice. That means they might not know that he wants to overturn Roe, that he opposes birth control, or that he has voted against women’s choice 123 out of 128 times in the Senate. If McCain is able to smuggle these anti-choice policies into the White House, consequences for women could include less control over their reproductive health, fewer choices in handling an unintended pregnancy, and even the criminalization of abortion.

The new video just released by Brave New Films depicts a dystopian vision where clinics would deny women the full range of services and even information about unintended pregnancies. These videos may just be satire, good for mocking McCain and his anti-choice policies, but they eerily reflect the actual decisions that he and other pro-life policymakers have made about the fate of reproductive rights in America.
One of the scariest possible consequences of electing an anti-choice candidate is that overturning Roe would lead to the criminalization of abortion. That means that women would be forced to choose between seeking an illegal, dangerous abortion and carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term. Doctors would have to choose between providing safe, quality abortion care and risking criminal prosecution, or turning women away when they need their doctors most. We know the results of such policies all too well—we’ve been down that road before, and we can’t go back. The Winning Message Action Fund of the National Institute for Reproductive Health has established a website, HowMuchTime.org and produced a video ad dedicated to making sure that this critical question is part of the national dialogue.

Advice columnists Amy Richards and Dan Savage discuss what they see as frequent misunderstandings about issues of feminism and abortion.

-----

In the July 18th, 2004 issue of The New York Times Magazine, feminist activist Amy Richards gave her account of deciding to undergo "selective reduction." The procedure reduces the number of fetuses carried by a pregnant woman - in Richards' case, from triplets to one baby.

Her controversial choice reignited debates about reproductive freedom and the ethics of choice. Richards recounts the backlash of the article and the many challenges of raising her son in Opting In: Having a Child Without Losing Yourself. Richards is co-founder of The Third Wave Foundation and has written feminist.com's advice column "Ask Amy" since 1995.

Internationally-syndicated columnist Dan Savage dispenses with taboos when writing about sex and relationships. Since 1991, his column "Savage Love" has offered advice that examines and dispels conservative models of love, sex, and family.

With great humor, Savage encourages a "good, giving, and game" approach to safe sexual experimentation and skepticism of "simplistic" views of monogamy. Dan Savage is also a contributor to "This American Life" and editorial director of The Stranger, the Seattle weekly that first published his popular column.

His book The Kid relates Savage's experiences adopting a baby boy with his partner. The Commitment: Love, Sex, Marriage, and My Family, his memoir of family, includes Savage's commentary on the gay marriage debate - City Arts & Lectures

Daniel Savage is an American sex advice columnist, author, media pundit, journalist, and newspaper editor. Savage is best known for penning the internationally syndicated relationship and sex advice column Savage Love. Its tone is humorous, profane, and often hostile to social conservatives, as in the Santorum controversy.

Savage has often been the subject of controversy regarding his opinions that pointedly clash with both traditional conservative moral values and those put forth by what Savage has been known to call the "gay establishment".

Amy Richards is co-founder of The Third Wave Foundation and has written feminist.com's advice column "Ask Amy" since 1995.

Thousands of people have marched in the streets of Chile to protest against a court decision banning free distribution of the contraceptive pill.

The ruling was sought by politicians who argued that the emergency contraceptive constitutes abortion, which is illegal in Chile under all circumstances.

Complete video at: fora.tv

Panelists Eric Ryan, Nathan Shedroff and Rajan Dev discuss "conscious consumerism" and its role in promoting sustainable business practices.

-----

Conscious Capitalism with panelists Nathan Shedroff, Brandon Schauer, Rajan Dev, and Eric Ryan.

Why are there 50 varieties of toothpaste on grocery store aisles? How does this fit into the world's heightened awareness of the need for sustainable business practices, and our own growing individual needs for self-actualization and meaning? Leaders in business, design and innovation will debate why a deeper understanding of human nature needs to be central to a 21st century business strategy and how it can challenge people's attitudes toward consumerism - The Commonwealth Club of California

At age 27, Eric Ryan founded method, a San Francisco-based consumer goods company that has reinvented homecare products with an innovative branding and product design approach. In five short years, method has challenged some of the world’s largest multinationals in home cleaning, laundry, personal care and air care to become the fastest growing consumer products company in the US.

Nathan Shedroff has been an information and interface designer for over twelve years. He focuses on developing online experiences, building online brand strategies and business models, and developing online communities. Throughout his career, he has worked in several different media and authored several books on multimedia, computers, and information. His electronic experience spans CD-ROMs, kiosks, published titles, application development, and online experiences.

Prior to joining Hot Studio as Chief Operating Officer, Rajan was the General Manager of the San Francisco office of Modern Media/Digitas for nearly six years. In that role, Rajan served clients such as Hewlett Packard, Intel, Sprint PCS, Michelin North America, Amgen and Charles Schwab delivering interactive marketing strategy and integrated marketing solutions (web, email and print).

Yes, I do write about Mrs. Collins a lot, but it is because I literally can't stand the fact that she gets away with calling herself a "moderate" when she is an Iraq-war cheerleader, war-profiteering enabler, faux-choice supporter and now telecom-immunity booster. She is not moderate, so much as she is a part of the body where Glenn Beck recently had an operation.

Lately, the evidence of how horrible she is for Maine and the country has further accumulated. She has talked like a peace activist while in Maine because the war is so unpopular there, but has voted again and again to enable the never-ending bloodshed in Iraq, which she and her allies justify by declaring it has gone down a little bit since we unleashed it on Iraqis and our own soldiers.

Wonderful.

On profiteering, she has chosen to simply look the other way while once again claiming to be all hot and bothered by it. When implored by Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey to hold hearings on Halliburton's no bid contracts, she just kinda shook her head and said "nah-ahh." Ditto for the disappearing hundreds of millions to billions in the "rebuilding" of New Orleans post-Katrina.

On telecom immunity, same old, same old for Susie. Maybe she'll yet listen to the wise advice of The Portland Press-Herald. Sadly, I doubt it.

Finally, we have the issue of a women's right to choose. Which Susan makes sure to claim whenever she can that she is all for, except for that small hiccup of strongly supporting two reactionary Supreme Court judges in Roberts and Alito, who have telegraphed their intention to give coat hangers a bad name once again. Now, all it will take is one more atavistic, Collins supported judge to overturn Roe V. Wade, which just celebrated it's 35th anniversary.

Do you really want Susan Collins to be that deciding vote after her tango with Alito? If you do for some inane reason, watch the attached ad put out by The People For The American Way. Hopefully it will set you straight.

Susan Collins is not a moderate. She just plays one on tv when she's back in Maine--on days when their are no good spritzer and weenie soirees back in DC.
