<p><p>When you're talking about the rights of workers and the urgent need to help them unionize, there's no better person to talk to than <a href="../../blog/53048-meet-the-bloggers-andy-stern-can-restore-the-middle-class">SEIU President Andy Stern</a>. On yesterday's <em>Meet the Bloggers</em>, Stern was our special guest to discuss the <a href="http://freechoiceact.org/petition/">Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)</a>, a vital piece of legislation that, if passed, will go a long way toward restoring the middle class in our country. EFCA would enable workers to unionize, allowing them to demand fairer wages and much needed benefits like health insurance. </p><p>EFCA would bring balance to the work place. As Michael Whitney of <a href="http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/">American Rights at Work</a> indicated during the show, this bill would effectively reduce the <a href="../../blog/50718-ceos-vs-minimum-wage-earners-guess-how-much-they-make">colossal disparity</a> between Fortune 500 CEOs making an average of $6,153 an hour and the majority of workers earning an hourly federal minimum wage of $6.55. What's more, EFCA would give workers a voice when it comes to negotiating jobs and contracts, which, as <a href="http://www.jackandjillpolitics.com/">JackandJillPolitics.com</a> blogger Baratunde Thurston pointed out, is especially important for minority workers. And with mega employers like Wal-Mart resorting to unionbusting tactics and electioneering in order to prevent their employees from supporting pro-union candidates, the time to support EFCA is critical. </p><p>That's why we dedicated our entire show to this issue, and that's why we partnered with American Rights at Work to create a new video called <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlbfpzC_-I0">Your New Job</a></em>, as well as a <a href="http://www.freechoiceact.org/page/s/yournewjob?source=bnf0908">petition to help EFCA pass</a>. <p><p>Three months ago, <a href="http://www.releaseajaytg.in/">Indian authorities arrested Ajay TG</a>, the 35-year-old activist filmmaker who created films like this one entitled <em>Aisa Kyon?</em> (or <em>Why?</em>), on trumped up charges. The police held Ajay prisoner in the central Indian state of Chattisgarh, claiming he had violated the Chattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA). This anti-terrorism law, which went into effect in 2006 and bears a resemblance to our country's Patriot Act, criminalized political beliefs and associating with "banned" organizations. But what exactly was Ajay's crime?<br /><br />Ajay inadvertently carried a Swiss Army pocket knife in his backpack when he attended <a href="http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/ASA20/013/2007/en/dom-ASA200132007en.html">the trial of Dr. Binayak Sen</a>, a well-known doctor and social worker in Chattisgargh. Police on security detail apprehended Ajay and campaigned in the media that he was a terrorist threat. They further claimed Ajay had made "unlawful contact" with a Maoist organization, alleging Ajay wrote to the group asking them to return his camera after they robbed him years before.</p><p>Both the knife and the letter appear to have been red herrings. They provided Indian police with more concrete grounds to arrest Ajay when what they were really concerned with was his affiliation with Dr. Sen. Prior to his arrest, Ajay had been working on a documentary called<br /> <em>Anjam</em>, which portrayed Dr. Sen's life, work, and subsequent arrest. Police had arrested Dr. Sen in May 2007 under suspicion of being a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naxalite">Naxalite</a>, or armed communist. </p><p>Dr. Sen had worked for decades treating the adivasis, a term used to describe "the first people" or poor indigenous tribes of India. He was the Chattisgarh general secretary of the India's human rights organization the <a href="People&#39;s Union for Civil Liberties">People's Union for Civil Liberties</a> (of which Ajay was also a member), but was accused of being linked to members of a banned Maoist group, primarily because Dr. Sen had publicly criticized the State's creation of armed vigilante groups to combat Maoists. <a href="http://www.freebinayaksen.org/">What Dr. Sen had actually done</a> was call attention to the police involvement in the killings of 12 adivasis earlier that year and had opposed a State-sponsored vigilante army that had resulted in the killings of many innocents.</p></p>

<br />JOHN MCCAIN: "On FISA, I believe it's very dangerous [...] to hold the telecommunications corporations liable for them acting in cooperation with the govnernment after 9/11 to help us monitor the communications of Al-Qaeda and terrorists. [...] I believe the telecommunications company, or any other organization, when called upon by their government, to do something that is in the national security interest, that they should not be held responsible in the way that [...] they're to be sued."</p>
<p>MCCAIN: "[...] Now it's my view that we should have the ability, with certain court procedures observed, to monitor the communications—particularly with the dramatic modernization and ability of communicate [sic] between organizations that want to do America harm. And so, I'm glad you're recording this because I'd like to make sure you show it to all your friends. Have no doubt where I stand: that the telecommunications companies should not be held liable for cooperation they provided the government of the United States after 9/11, when we were trying to stop further attacks on the United States of America. And to say that you want them to be held liable is something in my view that would be a trial lawyer's dream. And I strongly oppose it. Sen. Obama supports it. That's the difference in our views."</p>

<p>JOHN MCCAIN: "Now now now, Now we want to be polite to everyone. And I think it's an important part of the town hall meeting is that we be polite to every one. We need to move forward with these cases. We, my view is that we would move them to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. We need to move forward with these cases. I would remind you what you already know, some of these people are the most evil people that have ever existed and should never see the light of day. But at the same time there needs to be proceedings to try to address these cases and judgments can be made. I think they can be given trials, not the same kind of trials that American citizens receive. The Nuremburg trials did not provide the same legal niceties and abilities that a regular trials does. But I think it's important we move forward in these cases, determine if anyone is eligible to be free, and those others, keep them for as long as is necessary. But we have not progressed [...]"</p>
