He can also be heard on numerous concert, guest artist and cast recordings. He has toured extensively in concert and has played to sold-out audiences at major venues including New York's Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheatre and London's West End. See the blog <a href="http://adreamdeferred.org/blog/30699-why-you-should-be-worried-too-part-2">posts</a> by Fash on why you should be worried too -- your government can order you for removal even if you are a citizen or permanent resident!</p><p>This recent <a href="http://www.ojornal.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=2677&amp;amp;dept_id=543384&amp;amp;newsid=19393115&amp;amp;PAG=461&amp;amp;rfi=9">article</a> discusses how the deportation of U.S. citizens and permanent residents is not just a one-of-a-kind case. In all cases of mistaken deportation and removal proceedings, there is one common factor: all the victims were underprivileged. They were either racial and ethnic minorities with less socio-economic status, or suffering from mental health and disabilities.&nbsp; </p></p> </div> <a href="/blog/32863-deportations-driven-by-race-and-socio-economic-status">Continue reading</a> http://bravenewfilms.org/blog/29581-notes-from-underground-2-0-what-do-i-mean-by-underground 2008-02-26T15:50:10Z DREAMActivist <div class="post_content"> <p>In discussions about economic and racial disparities, academics and policymakers often phrase the debate as that between <strong>&lsquo;Two Americas&rsquo;</strong>&mdash;the lines between rich and poor, white and black, legal and illegal and so on.<br /><br />I do not subscribe to binary modes of thought and such dichotomizing discourses. For me, there are multitudes of America, and the lines are more blurry, if not at all apparent. The America we are concerned with in this post is the <strong>America Underground</strong>. <u>It is the culmination of rich and poor, white and black, legal and illegal&mdash;multitudes of differences that come together and sustain this crucial but oftentimes rendered invisible part of our society</u>.<br /><br /><strong>What do I mean when I use the term &lsquo;underground?&rsquo;</strong> I do not just refer to hiding or living in the shadows of society. I do not just refer to an alternative stream or way of life. In addition to these, I am referring to the <strong><u>underground economy</u></strong>&mdash;both the culture and productivity of informal work.<br /><br />What do I think of when I think of the underground economy? On the surface, lack of education, health care, human services and infrastructure flash through my mind. Digging further, I see illegal immigrants abused and made to work hard and long hours for monetary compensation comparable to wages in the &lsquo;Third World.&rsquo;&nbsp; I remember stories of women trapped and compelled to sleep with their employers in exchange for sponsorship. Looking around, I see more domestic and illiterate workers, young adults involved in petty crimes, drive-by shootings, gangs, prostitution, illicit drug trade, alcohol and substance abuse. <br /><br />Does the government want to put an end to this? Is there a real drive to end the everyday desperation in the lives of people underground, to provide ample opportunities for those that are part of this informal economy? Is compassion for another human being enough to move people out of this underground economy and try to integrate them into the culture of mass-everything? Is this part of the change that the front-running presidential candidates Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain promise?<br /><br />I do not think so. What would move the people in positions of power to reach out and help the powerless besides the promise of long-term monetary and political gains?<br /><br /><u>Disclaimer - I do not claim to have any or all of the answers. He is also the author of 'Tis (1999), which continues the narrative of his life, picking up from the end of the previous book and focusing on life as a new immigrant in America. Teacher Man (2005), detailed the challenges of being a young, uncertain teacher who must impart knowledge to his students. His works are often part of the syllabus in high schools.
