Every year, dedicated high-school students are denied the chance to attend college, based solely on their undocumented status. These young patriots are doctors who will never get the chance to heal us, teachers who won't be able to educate our children, police and firefighters who will never be able to protect us—all because their dreams have been deferred.

All three presidential hopefuls co-sponsored the federal DREAM Act, yet it has never been made law. The DREAM Act would enable states to grant in-state tuition to these hardworking immigrant students, making higher education (and eventually citizenship) a real possibility.

We need to put pressure on all three presidential candidates to commit to securing America's future by enacting the federal DREAM Act in their first 100 days of office.

Sign the petition so that we can show our elected officials that the dreams of students must not be sacrificed to the anti-immigrant, anti-American status quo.

Apart from teaching ESL to help immigrants adjust to life in this country, I also want to help students like myself. When I have the chance to work with them, I always admire their perseverance despite the obstacles they face.

This morning I decided to take along with me some reading assignments and some applications from immigrant students my friend sent me late last night. My friend and I opened volunteer positions at the DREAM Act Portal (DAP), an internet support forum for students who need the DREAM Act (www.dreamact.info). We received a good number of applicants and we are looking forward to provide an opportunity for students to work on advocacy efforts.

Reading the applications encouraged me to reflect on the entire issue, as usual. As I pedaled away on the bike, I thought about the talents that these students were willing to offer to the forum without pay. They really are determined to make a difference for all of us who need the DREAM Act to pass as soon as possible. All of us understand that we can’t let the ball drop, because we are ready to contribute to this society. I look forward to recommend many of these students to be part of the DAP Team to help us with advocacy work.

If you knew a student in our situation, what would you do to help him/her out? I plan to answer that question myself once I graduate from college and become an active member of my community.

Once I turned 18, I started receiving credit card offers in the mail, and I took it as an opportunity to start building some credit history. Little did I know that a few years later, after the ‘I’ll just use it to pump gas, buy this pair of pants for work, this book that I need, etc. etc. excuses,’ the charges would accumulate, and the interest rates, which never crossed my mind to keep track of, would have me swimming in the debt pool.

It’s easy for young people to swipe the plastic cards, and repeat the ‘I’ll pay it later’ mantra in their heads. Just out of college, I now face the bills of all the ‘little’ charges that I managed to make throughout my school life.

It was shocking to me to read that 41% of graduating seniors had credit card debt, with the average balance just over $3,000, according to the debt disease facts in www.keepitinyourpants.org.

I think young people need to be made well aware of the possible consequences of using these cards so freely, and of the astounding facts behind the credit card companies and banks that control this debt.
KeepItInUourPants.org is giving a perfect opportunity to get this point across through your own creativity by making a 30-60 second PSA, warning against the dangers of debt disease, yes, much like the dangers of STD’s, another epidemic. They will be giving away a $5,000 price to the first place winner, to be used for school related expenses.

Take a stand and fight this debt monster that targets our age group, while still taking the chance to show your artistic side. Go to www.keepitinyourpants.org for all the information, facts, and crazy videos. And from now on, keep that card in your pants.
