John McCain
Speech
Orlando, FL 08/18/08

TRANSCRIPT:
JOHN MCCAIN: I suppose from my opponent's vantage point, veterans concerns are just one more issue to be spun or worked to advantage. This would explain why he has also taken liberties with my position on the GI Bill. In its initial version, that bill failed to address the number one education request that I've heard from career service members and their families -- the freedom to transfer their benefits to a spouse or a child. The bill also did nothing to retain the young officer and enlisted leaders who form the backbone of our all-volunteer force.

As a political proposition, it would have much easier for me to have just signed on to what I considered flawed legislation. But the people of Arizona, and of all America, expect more from their representatives than that, and instead I sought a better bill. I'm proud to say that the result is a law that better serves our military, better serves military families, and better serves the interests of our country.

Once again, the Courts have come down on the side of undocumented students. After losing the battle in district courts and appeals court, Kansas Chairperson of the Republican Party, Kris Kobach made one final appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, only to be turned down. Obviously, the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court have nothing to say on the issue that hasn't already been said by the district and appeals courts: the plaintiffs do not have a right to sue.

It is highly unlikely that any court would strike down in-state tuition laws and thereby, deny undocumented students the right to attend institutions of higher learning. Instead of giving up, Kobach is out to get new plaintiffs to create new lawsuits. He insists that the courts skirted around the issue of equal protection and federal immigration law that we have already answered on this blog. Kobach continues to insist that in-state tuition rates for the children of illegal immigrants are "illegal" while the courts say otherwise.

While we are on the topic of "illegal," for those who don't know, Kris Kobach is the GOP politician that sent out emails boasting about voter caging--an ILLEGAL tactic employed by the Republican Party to purge likely-Democrat voters from the polls.

Whose "equal protection" rights are being violated by providing instate tuition to undocumented students who are in effect, state residents, that have resided in-STATE and attended high school there for at least three years? I would love to hear from some new plaintiffs that Kobach is claiming to represent.

In the meantime, undocumented students in at least 11 states are eligible to attend college at resident tuition rates.

North Carolina's ban on undocumented students has prompted a Davidson County teenager (going by the name of Esperanza), to return to Mexico in order to pursue higher education.

Many anti-immigrant activists would hail this as a victory for their side--that denying higher education opportunities for undocumented students prompts a "return flight." However, 1) This is a rare case -- most undocumented students graduate high school or get their bachelors degrees only to stay in the shadows of society and

2) Exporting our young talent and K-12 investment such as Esperanza is a brain drain, and net-loss for the United States. In effect, the United States is saying that it does not need educated, well-adjusted and assimilated, English-speaking immigrants.

John McCain
Speech
Selma, AL 04/21/08

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: "Senator McCain you said you're here to listen to people in areas like this. What are some of the issues that you're hearing specifically from folks in Selma, Alabama . . .?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "The mayor of Selma brought up several issues with me as well the mayor of Thomasville as well as Sen. Sanders. One of the major challenges that small business people face, and it's getting worse, is access to credit . . . we all know that most of the jobs in America are created by small businesses. Most of the taxes in America are paid by small businesses . . . and there is not only not an increased availability to credit . . . but, according to many, many people I've talked to, there is a beauracracy that's impossible to find your way through and it's called the Small Business Administration. That's gotta be fixed [applause]. The second area that we need to concentrate on . . . is our community colleges . . . we need to have every community college in America provided with the wherewithal to educate and train workers, particularly displaced workers who have lost their job through no fault of their own . . . I'm not a protectionist . . . "

Recently on a thread at the DREAM Act Portal, a fellow DREAMer asked about the estimated percentage of DREAM passing this year. It has not been the first time users sign up to answer this question. After other DAP users answer it, they usually stop posting instead of contributing in some way for the cause.

Do they just go back to sleep, to their normal lives? If so, then we are in trouble. It is said that about 65,000 of us graduate each year from US public high schools without much hope for further education. I know that if I had not been granted the opportunity to attend college, I would have probably joined many in the shadows, working under the table and forgetting about college for a while. Now, as a graduating senior, I realize the importance to continue one's education immediately after high school. Within these past four years, I developed my social, academic, and spiritual life in college. I would not have had the opportunity to do so if I I had worked for a while until I was in my late twenties. I wouldn't get the chance to live in a dorm, be part of clubs, and socialize with my peers because I'd just be seen as an older adult. In other words, the experience isn't the same once you grow old and then continue where you left off after high school.

But I digress. I would just like to see more relevant questions asked about the DREAM Act other than just the chances that it might pass this year. I'll be realistic and state that due to the focus on the presidential elections, there is a very slim chance for the DREAM Act to even reach the senate floor. Unless we have thousands of supporters actively pushing this legislation, we won't be seeing much this year.

However, that does not give us the excuse to stop our efforts. This is the purpose of this blog--to keep the memory of DREAM alive so that other students and supporters can be informed of what is going on and how one can help. This is what we can do, for now.
