www.ted.com Outside.in's Steven Johnson says the Web is like a city: built by many people, completely controlled by no one, intricately interconnected and yet functioning as many independent parts. While disaster strikes in one place, elsewhere, life goes on.

An ambitious project of the Philosophy and Communication Arts Departments of Molloy College in Rocville Centre. The fifth in a five part series of interviews highlighting community activism for social justice on Long Island, this episode focuses on mentoring.

This program was part of a cross-registered course on social justice and mass communication. Dr. Michael Russo's philosophy class did the pre-production work (identifying topics, finding "movers and shakers" on social justice on Long Island, and coming up with questions for the panelists) and my "TV 3" class did the actual production work (shooting "B-roll" video, creating computer graphics, producing opening and closing credit packages, and the actual in-studio shooting).

I am aware of no other college or university on Long Island or the NY area to have undertaken such an ambitious project.

I am proud of the students who took part in this.

www.ted.com Despite a love and fascination for Rome dating to his days as an architecture student, David Macaulay found the path to his book Rome Antics took some unusual (and frustrating) turns. Through failed pop-up designs, scribbled out title possibilities, surreal sketchbook pages (think "Piranesi meets Escher"), and rambling story lines, Macaulay details each step of his winding journey towards completion of his illustrated homage to the city.

Stanford University business professor Chip Heath stresses the importance of simplicity to effectively conveying an idea.

-----

Chip Heath, co-author of "Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die," talks about what makes certain ideas "naturally sticky."

Chip Heath is a Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. His research examines why certain ideas - ranging from urban legends to folk medical cures, from Chicken Soup for the Soul stories to business strategy myths - survive and prosper in the social marketplace of ideas. These "naturally sticky" ideas spread without external help in the form of marketing dollars, PR assistance, or the attention of leaders.

A few years back Chip designed a course, now a popular elective at Stanford, that asked whether it would be possible to use the principles of naturally sticky ideas to design messages that would be more effective. That course, "How to Make Ideas Stick," has now been taught to hundreds of students including managers, teachers, doctors, journalists, venture capitalists, product designers, and film producers.
