Wherever you go, whatever you say, write, photograph, or buy, you are generating information. That information can be captured, digitized, retrieved, and copied--anywhere on Earth, instantly. Sophisticated computers can increasingly uncover meaning in those digital tracesunderstanding, anticipating, and influencing you as never before. Is this utopia? Or the dawning of a 1984/Brave New World horror world? Whatever you call it, it's happening. What kind of world are we creating? What will it be like to live there?
Blown to Bits offers powerful and controversial answers to these questions and gives you the knowledge you need to help shape your own digital future, not let others do it for you. Building on their pioneering joint MIT/Harvard course, the authors reveal how the digital revolution is changing everything, in ways that are stunning even the most informed experts.

Hal Abelson is Class of 1922 Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and an IEEE Fellow. He has helped drive innovative educational technology initiatives such MIT OpenCourseWare, cofounded Creative Commons and Public Knowledge, and was founding director of the Free Software Foundation. Harry Lewis, former Dean of Harvard College, is Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at Harvard. He is author of Excellence Without a Soul: Does Liberal Education Have a Future.

Author Sandy Blaine visits Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Ca, to discuss her book "Yoga for Computer Users". This event took place August 22, 2008, as part of the Authors@google series. For more information about Sandy and the book, please visit www.sandyblaine.com

More and more people depend on computers for work and entertainment, which means more and more hours spent slumped in a chair -- and more and more hand, wrist, neck, shoulder and lower back injuries. Yoga for Computer Users was written to help stem this epidemic of musculo-skeletal injuries through a yoga-based program of preventive self-care, using simple but effective exercises to teach people how to support and maintain healthy posture, relieve neck and shoulder tension and help prevent injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. You can use this program regardless of your age or yoga experience, and many of the exercises are designed to be done right at your desk. This event will be participatory and interactive, with some instructor-led chair stretches as well as discussion and Q&A.

Sandy Blaine has been practicing yoga for over 20 years, and teaching and writing about yoga since 1993. A founding member and co-director of the Alameda Yoga Station and author of Yoga for Healthy Knees and Yoga For Computer Users, she is also the long-time in-house yoga instructor for Pixar Animation Studios. Her writing has also been published in a number of magazines, including Yoga Journal, Yoga International and Ascent. Sandy believes that greater health, well-being and joy are available to everyone and strives to share the gifts of yoga with others through her work.

Author Michael Chorost visits Google's headquarters in Mountain View, CA, to discuss his book "Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human". This event took place on June 30, 2008, as a part of of the Authors@google series.

Michael Chorost became a cyborg on October 1, 2001, the day his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing in 1964, he went completely deaf in his thirties. Rather than live in silence, he chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing. This is the story of Chorost's journey -- from deafness to hearing, from human to cyborg -- and how it transformed him. The melding of silicon and flesh has long been the stuff of science fiction. But as Chorost reveals in this witty, poignant, and illuminating memoir, fantasy is now giving way to reality. For more information about Michael Chorost and Rebuilt, visit www.rebuilt-thebook.com

Michael Chorost has a B.A. from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He lives in San Francisco, where he writes, teaches, and consults.

In 1821, Charles Babbage was reviewing a set of mathematical tables with a colleague in preparation for a scientific presentation when, after finding a wealth of errors, he exclaimed in frustration, "I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam!" With this outburst, Babbage began to envision an end to human errors in the numerical tables upon which finance, trade, science, and navigation relied. The Difference Engine is the fascinating story of his heroic quest, against all odds, to build the first computing machine more than one hundred years before the modern computer we use today was invented.

Doron Swade, an engineer, technology historian, and leading authority on Charles Babbage, is assistant director and head of collections at London's Science Museum. He is also the mastermind of a six-year project to construct a Babbage calculating engine from original nineteenth century designs.

This talk took place on May 8, 2008 at Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters as part of the Authors@Google program.

For the uninitiated, network design can be a daunting subject with its seemingly mystical jargon and ever changing protocols. However, once you have a basic knowledge of the equipment involved, myths about networking will be dispelled. The following will walk you through the basic building blocks of a computer network.

While it's possible to create a network by simply connecting two computers together with an Ethernet cable or wireless router, most modern networks are more complex. Most corporate networks connect more than ten computers together along with internet connections and network peripherals.

Modems

Most networks will share an internet connection. Traditionally, modems were designed for dial-up connections but cable/DSL modems are now the norm. Newer cable/DSL modems can handle up to 10 Mbps Ethernet connections, although most internet service providers won't match the higher speeds. Those corporations with higher bandwidth needs require multiple modems with multiple internet connections.

When it comes to networking, the future is wireless. As the technology develops and transfer speeds increase, it looks increasingly likely that wireless will replace Ethernet in most home and small business networks. In this article, I look at how far wireless networking has come and at what the future holds.

There is little doubt that wireless is the way of the future. In fact, it has already made its way into many homes and businesses. If you own a laptop with wireless capabilities, you already know all the handy wireless hotspots in your local area. While you still have to pay for some of these services, increasingly business like cafes and restaurants are offering free Wi-Fi to attract customers.

Wireless is also becoming the medium of choice for the average home network. Most if not all internet service providers (ISPs) offer wireless routers with their packages for a few extra dollars. Also, you will be hard pushed to find a desktop or laptop computer manufactured in the last couple of years that does not have wireless capabilities. So, wireless is both cheap and easy to set up in the home.

The same is true for small businesses. The average wireless router's signal will cover enough area for most small offices. Wireless networking also cuts out the cost of installing and maintaining Ethernet cables. And, of course, it is much neater.

Internet access is an essential for any small business to compete effectively in today's business world. It allows ease of communication within a business and with customers, clients and other businesses.

Some of the main advantages of internet access for small businesses include:

Communication - Employees and customers can use email, instant messaging and even internet calling to communicate quickly and easily.
Information - The internet and the wealth of information it provides is quickly and easily accessible to employees and can help boost productivity.
Remote access - Employees can access the network and/or their workstation from anywhere using mobile devices such as laptops and PDAs.
Increased exposure - Few companies do not have their own websites nowadays. Establishing and maintaining an online presence should be a priority for all businesses.
