Some worry that even after this reform many Americans with pre-existing conditions -- including many thousands of cancer patients -- could still be denied insurance. There would be no limits on premiums, and lower-income Americans would get additional financial assistance. The cooperation among states in the purchase of insurance would also be a crucial step in ridding the market of both needless and costly regulations, and the dominance in the market of only a few insurance companies. We need to break down these barriers to competition, creativity, and excellence, with the goal of establishing a national market to make innovative policies and lowest prices available to every person in every state."

JOHN MCCAIN: "Anyway, let me just say, so, uh, th-, the p-, uh, then we have to address these issues one by one and, uh, s-, I'll say, there's many. Community health centers obviously are important for low-income people. Walk-in clinics. The most expensive form of health care in America, as we all know, is emergency room care. If Wal-Mart or one of these people wants to set up a clinic where they have a doctor or pharmacist and you've got a routine health need and go in there and get quick treatment and the pharmaceutical drug that you need, fine. Let's do it. We need to have outcome-based treatment of the chronic diseases."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . how do you feel about preventative care . . . ? And if, if you would not become the president, how would you feel about expressing those viewpoints that you have that are very good. I've heard you talk and I agree a lot with what you said, how would you work with whoever became the president?"

JOHN MCCAIN: ". . . One of the most alarming statistics in America today is the increase of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes amongst young Americans. There is no health care system in the world that can sustain the cost of a continued increase in those, just those three aspects of America's health . . . It's impossible to reduce the cost of health care in America if that's the case. But more importantly we are, as we have seen through many, many years, and maybe centuries, an increase in the life span of Americans that could level off because of the health and wellness of another generation of Americans. Um, I would like to see everything ranging from insurance companies rewarding their clients for wellness and fitness to employers rewarding their employees if they join a health club . . . young Americans . . . really look up to . . . our great athletes. And I'd love to see my friend, Shaquille O'Neal, who just finished the playoffs last night . . . he inaugurated a program in Miami . . . called "Shaq's Challenge." And I had at Miami Children's Hospital a chance to meet a young man who had lost 76 pounds who had taken up Shaq's challenge . . . Smoking. My friends, I smoked for a long time. It used to be the thing that Navy pilots did, it was part of our sort of image . . . Smoking is really, really unfortunate . . . We have taxes on cigarettes today and that money, instead of going to programs to disincentivize young Americans to smoke . . . it's general revenues. And it was supposed to go . . . to these programs and it's not . . . So, wellness and fitness, wellness and fitness."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . my question is really about objectivity and every time I see a debate on health care I really wonder whether or not the statistics and the data that people are discussing are accurate, reliable . . . so are you satisfied with the information that you're getting in terms of it's ability to allow competent decision making?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "I think on the major statistics I am. And here's the most disturbing fact of all and I don't think it's disputed: 47 million Americans are without health insurance today. Half of them will probably, is because they're out of a job and they will gain employment and then they will then be able to obtain health insurance. And that's nice to know. But the other half, which I, 8 million are children, then they, and many of those children of course is just because we haven't been around to sign them up. But then you get down into what you and I all know, is with the big looming fiscal problem and challenge and that is those with people with chronic diseases and, or, and/or preexisting conditions. And that is the area where we really have to address because the insurers won't insure them, they either making too much money to qualify for Medicaid or other reasons, like I said there are some children that simply aren't in the SCHIP program just because they haven't signed up for it . . . And so my answer to you is I think that a lot of the, some of the statistics may be not accurate but the issue of the uninsured and those with preexisting conditions or chronic diseases, is, is really a, particularly the preexisting conditions, is one that's the major challenge in health care in America today."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: ". . . I am kind of a liason between services provided and insurance companies and patients and families . . . I believe that the health care costs are rising not so much so because of providers but more so because of insurance compainies and under your proposed health care, um, resolution how do you plan on having the insurance companies being held accountable for the fact that they're not reimbursing us the way that they should and thus making their members have such high, uh, out of pocket responsibilities?

JOHN MCCAIN: " . . .one of the frustrations that Americans feel today, particularly those whose health insurance is provided by their employer is that they don't have a choice. It's the insurance that, that their employer provides to them . . . what I want to do is have Americans have a choice and be in charge, the families to be in charge of their health insurance choices. I want to give every family in America a $5000 refundable tax credit that they can take and go across state lines . . . if there's a better health insurance plan in Arizona, let them take it. You can do that with automobile insurance. And I believe that that gives Americans a choice in kind of a competition. If they want to keep the insurance that their employer provides to them, fine . . . I'm for abolishing the write off for the employer to provide the healthcare by giving the employee the $5000 tax credit and that is more than enough to pay any taxes that might be associated with that benefit and also gives them the choice if they want to go someplace else and choose the insurer of their choice. I believe that choice and competition are really the keys to frankly the success in education in America and certainly healthcare. And my friends, if you think the government should take over the healthcare system in America, please let me know after you go to the airport and go through screening . . . I want to make healthcare affordable and available. I do not want a system of healthcare in America that we see in Canada and we see in other countries in the world where we see government healthcare systems . . . "

My friends, obviously if you can't get insurance you're in deep trouble, we all know that, we all know that. But we need to have what is called GAP, guaranteed access plans, and there are states that are working on it right now. In the state of Florida, their Governor Charlie Christ, is talking about a plan called "Cover Florida." In 20 states they have already taken measures to reduce the size, or, or, or, uh, cap the premiums for people who are, who have these conditions. We must work with the Governors. And we may have, we'll have to establish a fund, working with the states and the Governors and the legislatures and the patients. And we will provide, and we will provide the needed care for those who have chronic diseases or preexisting conditions . . . But in the meantime we need to have more choice and competition and health care for every person in America . . ."

TRANSCRIPT:
QUESTIONER: [...] "Many Insurance companies refuse to cover individuals who have a serious illness or have what they call a pre-existing condition. What will you do to stop this discrimination like this and will you pledge to do so?"

JOHN MCCAIN: "We will have to establish what we call GAP or government approved programs. They are working, I believe with the governors and the legislators, we can come together and establish risk pools that are spread widely to ensure those people who are in that category with chronic illnesses and with the so called uninsurables. If we're gonna keep health care viable in America we have to understand, as you said, that there are some people that simply cannot acquire insurance. So we the Federal Government are gonna have to contribute and the states contribute as well. And we're going to have to talk to all the Governors and Legislators and maybe allow them to tailor some of the programs that are unique to their states and their challenges. But I don't frankly, I've studied, I've thought, I've talked, I've read for years and were gonna have to have these GAP programs" [...]

QUESTIONER: [...] "I am concerned about cancer survivors and people like that getting coverage. [...] Companies can charge them $30,000 a year for the same plan."

MCCAIN: "But I'd also like to change the law so people can shop all over America. In any state in America, for the best heath insurance plan that suits them. And I'd like to give every family in America $5,000 refundable tax credit so they can go all over America and get the health insurance policy of their choice."

QUESTIONER: "As far as allowing competition over state lines, are you going to allow that to supersede state laws like Michelle's Law that we have here in New Hampshire, that insists that insurance companies cover college students when they have a serious illnesses."

MCCAIN: "We are going to have to work with the states but I also I want people to have the ability to go across state lines to obtain insurance. That doesn't mean I'm going to force certain regulations and rules on the states. But I do think there maybe insurance companies in some other states or other areas of America who might be able to insure people, or them to obtain insurance policies. And this also creates a far greater atmosphere of competition amongst them as well. Health insurance is the elephant in the room and I thank you for your question." [...]

Full story at www.thebluestate.com

A number of soldiers that were victims of the mistreatment and disrespect at Walter Reed testified before the House Committee on Government Reform.

Staff Srg John Shannon, who was wounded in battle, describes how he was talked down to by the staff & Walter Reed.

SHANNON: "..at that point, I was showing a soldier that was also a patient in opthamology down to the office. And it was five minutes before they opened, and I just needed to ask the lady if a certain opthamologist worked there. And she looked me up and down, in my opinion like a piece of dirt, and said, 'Come see me when we open.' I won't repeat what I said to her. I cussed a blue streak. And it took everything I had not to jump over the counter and smash the printer she was using to copy.."

What a way to respect the soldiers that put their bodies on the line to defend YOUR freedoms.
