Landmark Case Returns to NY Seeking Millions from Corporations that Profited from South African Apartheid

A landmark case is returning to a New York district court that seeks millions of dollars in reparations from corporations that supported and profited from South African apartheid. The suit is filed on behalf of thousands of apartheid victims under the Alien Tort Claims Act. It seeks damages from the companies for doing business with the apartheid government despite international sanctions and boycotts. The companies include the oil giants BP and ExxonMobil, banks such as Citigroup and UBS, and the car giants General Motors and Ford Motor. We speak with South African poet and activist, Dennis Brutus. [includes rush transcript]

Woody Guthrie's song about the displaced, the homeless, the migrants. Although this was an attack on capitalists and corporations during the depression, in this age of uffettered corporate control of society and government, in this age of anti-immigrant and anti-worker hysteria whipped up by the discredited but still dominant corrupt corporate media, with home and farm foreclosures at an all-time high, Woody's words were never more true for millions of Americans and immigrants.

JOHN MCCAIN: "Reckless conduct and the abuse of power must be called to account on Wall Street, in Washington, or any place else. I've got a few ideas about Washington in particular. My plan for reform starts with a top to bottom review of the departments of every department and agency to make sure that Federal money is going to essential priorities like job training, the security of our citizens, and the care of our veterans.

"We're also going to put an end to the 10s of billions of dollars squandered every year on special favors and corporate welfare. At a time when many working families can hardly afford their mortgage, their groceries, and gas for their car or truck, we need to close the door firmly on corporate lobbyists. My friends, I have a reputation of low tolerance for the wasteful, abusive and occasionally corrupt ways of business as usual in Washington.

"I hope I've earned that reputation because it's exactly the spirit we need in the White House today and we need it badly, my friends. And you're gonna get it."

TRANSCRIPT:
[...]
JOHN MCCAIN: "It's a great privilege for me to have had the opportunity to serve but could I just ask all of our veterans to stand so we can all thank them. Thank you for, thank you for your service, than you for being here, thank you very much, thank you and god bless, thank you."

QUESTIONER: "Can I first say that it was a humbling and very exhilarating experience to go down to South Carolina and volunteer for your staff down there. It was probably the five best days of my life."

MCCAIN: "Thank you"

QUESTIONER: "I would like to ask you, when you will finally have Barack Obama show up to a town hall meeting to have a conversation, will you just please do me one favor and remind him of what Ronald Reagan reminded of us decades ago; corporations collect taxes they do not pay taxes. And I'm sick and tired of hearing about these windfall taxes cause it's going to be my mother, my grandmother, my Aunt Bobs, my family members, my friends, who really can't afford it, to pay more."

[...]

MCCAIN: "There are executives of corporations that are giving the free enterprise system a bad name. Ok. There's people that have taken too generous of a package to say the least. Sometimes obscene and was not reflected by the performance of the corporation that they headed or played key roles in. If there's been speculation, and if there's been misbehavior, then there should be full and complete investigations and those people should be penalized for whatever laws they have broken or rules and regulations they have broken. But know let me talk to you about corporate taxes for a second. The corporate tax level in the United States of America is 35%. It's the second highest in the world. I was just told by John Chambers, who as you know does business, Cysco does business all over the entire globe. How many employees? 65 thousand employees. Now John Chambers mentioned to me that in Ireland the corporate tax is 11. Ours is 35%, Ireland is 11. Ireland is a beautiful country, as you well know. So businesses and corporations sometimes will go to those other countries and set up operations there because of the lower tax rates. Now ours is the second highest in the world, only Japan is higher and obviously the Japanese economy has not been a model for ours. So I've advocated lowering the corporate tax from 35 to 25%. I don't view that as a quote break for corporations, I view it as an incentive for them to stay in the United States of America, hire people, have jobs, have their headquarters here. So the next time that you hear this bit about loopholes for corporations ect. If they're loopholes then I want them closed, but if it's a matter of corporate taxes then I want lower taxes so we can do exactly what I just described to you. Thank you."

Rising education, housing, and health-care costs have made it virtually impossible for all but the corporate elite to enjoy what were once considered middle-class comforts. Thousands are afflicted with a wrenching choice: take up residence on America's financial and social margins or sell out. And it's not just impoverished teachers and social workers, struggling to pay their rent, who are hurt. From the activist who works to give others a living wage but isn't paid one himself, to the universal health-care advocate who becomes a management consultant for Big Pharma, The Trap presents a damning indictment of the economic and political landscape that traps young Americans. It examines the struggles between passions and paychecks.

Author, economist and TV celebrity Ben Stein laments what he feels to be America's lack of community values.

-----

How Not to Ruin Your Life with Ben Stein.

You may know him best for his deadpan delivery in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or his offbeat game show, "Win Ben Stein's Money." But this active thinker is also a major contributor to current discussions and understanding of business, ethical and social issues in the world of finance, and the political and social content of mass culture. Come hear this polymath speak about the many economic, political and social issues confronting us today - The Commonwealth Club of California

Ben Stein is a lawyer, economist, and commentator on finance (and a well-known actor and Hollywood personality).

Stein served as an economist at the U.S. Department of Commerce. He has been a longtime contributor to Barron's and a columnist and editorial writer for the Wall Street Journal. He has also written extensively about finance for New York magazine and the Washington Post.

In addition to writing for Yahoo! Finance, he currently writes a biweekly column on economics and finance for the New York Times and appears weekly on the Fox News network commenting on finance and economics.

He is the author of several personal finance books, including How to Ruin Your Financial Life, Moneypower: How to Make Inflation Make You Rich, Financial Passages, and - with Phil DeMuth - the best-sellers Yes, You Can Time the Market, Yes, You Can Be a Successful Income Investor, and the forthcoming Yes, You Can Still Retire Comfortably.

Stein is Honorary Chair of the National Retirement Planning Coalition, and lives in Los Angeles, Calif.

Of course it is, George:

The surge of foreign money has injected fresh tension into a running debate about America’s place in the global economy. It has supplied state governors with a new development strategy — attracting foreign money. And it has reinvigorated sometimes jingoistic worries about foreigners securing control of America’s fortunes, a narrative last heard in the 1980s as Americans bought up Hondas and Rockefeller Center landed in Japanese hands.

And who wants to do something about it?

With a growing share of investment coming from so-called sovereign wealth funds — vast pools of money controlled by governments from China to the Middle East — lawmakers and regulators are calling for greater scrutiny to ensure that foreign countries do not gain influence over the financial system or military-related technology. On the presidential campaign trail, the Democratic candidates have begun to focus on these foreign funds, calling for international rules that would make them more transparent.

I'm sure that George's overwhelming $800 in "America's pocket" will go a long way to paying for those medical bills, house payments, rent, food, and--what's that other big one again?...oh yeah--gasoline.

The weak dollar has made American companies and properties cheaper in global terms, particularly for European and Canadian buyers. Even as Americans confront the prospect of a recession, economic growth remains strong worldwide, endowing oil producers like Saudi Arabia and Russia and export powers like China and Germany with abundant cash.

And the forecast?

But even if political tension increases, so will the flow of foreign money, some analysts say, for the simple reason that businesses need it.

“The forces sucking in this capital are much bigger than the political forces,” said Mr. Garten, the Yale trade expert. “If there is a big controversy, it will be between Washington on the one hand and corporate America on the other. In that contest, the financiers and the businessmen are going to win, as they always do.”

Somewhere, The Nation of Dick is smiling.

Henry Kravis is a billionaire, the 57th richest person in America. He acquired this wealth by purchasing public companies with borrowed money. To pay off the debt, he cuts benefits at the company, sells its assets, and lays off employees.

This get-rich-quick scheme made him $450 million last year. Meanwhile, his tax rate is lower than teachers, firemen, nurses, even his own cleaning staff!

Yet everyday we hear another story, we live another experience, we see another example of the horrific economic pain our country is being devastated by.

It's time all of us started a WAR ON GREED. warongreed.org (more)
