Judge dismisses indictments against political figures.

Raymondville - Judge Manuel Banales has dismissed charges against Vice President Dick Cheney, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, State Senator Eddie Lucio Junior, and others today.

The judge says there was not sufficient evidence to support the indictments.

District Attorney Juan Guerra tells NEWSCHANNEL 5 he was expecting the dismissals.

The Texas Rangers are hot on his trail and a judge wants Guerra found. They are looking for him after he failed to show up to a court hearing on Wednesday for a motion to quash the indictments on Vice President Dick Cheney and almost a dozen other high-profile officials.

Lucio and Cheney tied into GEO prison company

WILLACY COUNTY - Vice President Dick Cheney and Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. are tied to the GEO prison company because they both made money off the GEO group.

The indictment says that the Vice President has $85 million invested in a company called the Vanguard Group. The Vanguard Group has investments in prison companies such as the GEO group. The indictments states that the Vice President has a say in how much money the federal government pays those prison companies to house inmates. According to the indictment, it's a conflict of interest because the more money prison companies make, the more money that goes back to the investors such as Cheney.

As for Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. the accusation against him is that he was paid to be a consultant for the prison companies and that he made a profit as a result of his senate office.

The Neverending Vote

Election day in Denver in 2006 saw lines late into the night, and an uncountable number simply walking away from the polls. A lot of things have been changed to try and address that, including going back to systems less dependent on computerized systems. And it's estimated that 35% of Coloradans have already voted by mail or early vote.

But the ballot in Colorado is long this year. Seriously long. It took me about 45 minutes to vote it, and I skipped the judges. I don't know how many minutes election officials here figured people would need when they decided how many voting booths needed to be where. I'm guessing it wasn't 45.

The rumor is this is the longest ballot in the country. We'll be keeping an eye on things on election day to see how the system handles such a ginourmous ballot. Tune in to theuptake.org.
