First they took Kismayo, a key port city, now they're making headway across southern Somalia.

Opposition armed groups, including al-Shabab fighters and remnants of the Islamic Courts Union, are seizing control of the small southern town of Dhobley, near the Kenyan border.

There's been a major comeback by Islamic groups in recent months and few in Somalia are complaining.

Yemen's Army Captures Rebel Camp, Kills 19 Insurgents, AFP Says
May 5 (Bloomberg) -- Yemen's army captured a military camp held by Islamic rebels for the past three months, killing 19 insurgents, Agence France-Presse reported.

The fighting took place in the village of Dafaa, in the northwestern district of Haydan, AFP said, citing an unidentified local government official. Soldiers entered the camp after the fighting, AFP reported.

Shiite Muslim rebels, led by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, are fighting to restore a Shiite administration in the region, AFP said. The government has accused them of seeking to impose Islamic law in the country that lies on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

The government blamed rebels for bombing a mosque in the disputed region on May 2, killing 18 people, most of them soldiers, the news agency reported. The rebels denied the allegation. Clashes two days ago at Munbah killed 10 people, according to the report.

Artist Jon Ippolito poses the question of whether or not computer code can be considered a form of free expression.

-----

"At the Edge of Art," with Jon Ippolito and Joline Blais.

With the coming of code and the Web, art moves beyond being representational to something that can execute, can make things happen. Ippolito and Blais show that art, like the antibodies in our immune system, creates alien forces in service of the whole. It anticipates threats and models them. It is a diversity agent. - The Long Now Foundation

One of many foot soldiers in the battle between network and hierarchic culture, Jon Ippolito is an artist, Guggenheim curator, and co-founder of the Still Water program for network art and culture at the University of Maine. His current projects - including the Variable Media Network, the Open Art Network, and his 2006 book co-authored with Joline Blais, At the Edge of Art - aim to expand the art world beyond its traditional preoccupations.

-----

William Neukom discusses "Advancing the Rule of Law in the U.S. and Abroad."

In August, Neukom takes over the helm of one of the world's largest professional organizations and one of the most influential groups in law, politics and society. He faces growing concerns that democratic rule of law is being threatened in an increasingly stormy world climate. Hear Neukom identify the battlegrounds and present the American Bar Association's key goals. - The Commonwealth Club of California

William H. Neukom, a partner in the Seattle office of K and L Gates, is president of the American Bar Association. His one-year term began in ugust 2007 at the adjournment of the association's Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Neukom was Microsoft Corp.'s chief lawyer for nearly a quarter-century. As executive vice president of Law and Corporate Affairs, Neukom managed Microsoft's legal, government affairs and philanthropic activities for 17 years. Previously, he was the firm's lead counsel while working as a partner at Preston, Gates and Ellis. Neukom rejoined Preston Gates in 2002.

As Microsoft's lead counsel, Neukom led the company's efforts to establish, distribute and protect intellectual property rights around the world. He was instrumental in securing the landmark legal victory in Apple Computer v. Microsoft Corporation, a copyright case which spanned 1988 -- 1995. Neukom also led Microsoft's defense of antitrust claims brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, U.S. Department of Justice and the European Union, which culminated in consent decrees in 1994 and 2001.

Before joining Microsoft, Neukom was a partner of Preston Gates and Ellis LLP, where he had a general practice with emphasis on litigation, commercial law and nonprofit organizations.
