Veteran Broadway director Doug Hughes discusses his career and methods with Robert LuPone, the director of the New School for Drama. Hughes is the New School's artist-in-residence for the 2007-8 academic year.

Doug Hughes is an associate artist at Roundabout Theatre Company, where he recently directed Eugene O’Neill's A Touch of the Poet, Richard Greenberg's A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Jon Robin Baitz' The Paris Letter and Stephen Belber's McReele. He is also the resident director at MCC Theater, where he directed Last Easter, Scattergood, Frozen, Anadarko and The Grey Zone (1996 Obie Award for Direction).

For his work on Frozen, Hughes received Tony Award, Outer Critics Circle and Lortel nominations. Other recent work in New York includes Engaged at Theatre for a New Audience; Flesh and Blood (Callaway Award for Best Direction), The Beard of Avon and A Question of Mercy, all at NYTW; Othello (with Keith David and Liev Schreiber) at the Public; John Guare's Lake Hollywood at Signature and Doubt, Defiance and An Experiment with An Air Pump for Manhattan Theatre Club. For his work on Doubt, Hughes won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. He also won the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Drama Desk and Callaway Awards for the same production. In May 2005, Hughes received an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence.

Get Ralph Reed Off CNN Before Tomorrow Night!

You may have read that CREW has released a statement calling on CNN to remove "proven liar" Ralph Reed from their political coverage. I'm not sure why, as he's friends with an admirably aboveboard cast of characters. Such as Jack Abramoff, and sweatshop owners in the Marianas who don't believe that abortion is so much a choice as something to be forced upon lazy, pregnant female workers with a coat hangar and a few sedatives.

Wonderul friends Mr. Reed has. Oh, and as this video will remind you, he was actually more than just best buds with Abramoff. He was a partner. No, not in a "I just met Larry Craig in the stall next door" kinda way (although anything is possible), but in a "ripping off Native American tribes" kinda way.

And if CNN doesn't have him removed? Well, then perhaps they can no longer call themselves this.

A group called Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is calling on CNN to remove Republican strategist Ralph Reed from its team of election-night analysts, calling Reed “a proven liar” who carries a grudge against GOP presidential candidate John McCain.
Reed, former chairman of the state GOP and ex-head of the Christian Coalition, was one of CNN’s unpaid commentators last week, as votes from the New Hampshire primary rolled in.

Not that John McCain shouldn't be blasted from time to time, but I'm all for Reed getting dumped by anyone. Any time. Anywhere.

“Reed’s disdain for Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain, stems from Indian Affairs Committee hearings the senator spearheaded, exposing Reed’s work on behalf of [Washington lobbyist Jack] Abramoff’s tribal clients.
“Reed’s primary opponent in the lieutenant governor race publicized the information that came out during the hearings, contributing to Reed’s defeat at the polls.
“It has been reported that Reed’s defenders allege that Sen. McCain released the email exchanges between Reed and Abramoff in revenge for Reed’s support of President Bush in the 2000 campaign. Given Reed’s hostility to Sen. McCain, Reed is hardly an unbiased voice commenting on the Republican candidates’ race for their party’s nomination.”

BREAKING: Federal Magistrate Recommends Temporary Restraining Order Be Issued Against White House

Magistrate Judge John Facciola, issued a report and recommendation in which he concluded that a temporary restraining order preventing the White House from destroying any back-up copies - in whatever medium -- created to preserve data should be issued by the District Court judge.
CREW sought this order to ensure that back-up copies of the millions of email deleted from White House servers between March 2003 and October 2005 were preserved pending resolution of CREW's lawsuit challenging as contrary to law those deletions and the failure of the White House to have an effective electronic record-keeping system in place. The court refused to accept the last-minute proffer of the White House to provide a declaration in lieu of a court order, explaining that a declaration is not sufficient because a violation is not punishable by contempt. The White House has 10 days in which to file an objection to this recommendation, after which District Court Judge Henry Kennedy will issue an order.

Wow, could somebody actually be holding the Bush Administration accountable for being members of a government in a democracy? I won't hold my breath until this process plays out...

Court may move against White House

Some judges are better than others. Here's one now:

A U.S. magistrate indicated Wednesday that a federal court may order the Bush administration to preserve copies of all White House e-mails, a move that a government lawyer argued strongly against.

A quote from the judge:

Can the government provide assurances that the White House backup tapes of its e-mails have not been "obliterated and recycled?" asked Facciola.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is trying to make sure that they're still intact. They're the ones suing the White House.

A Justice Department attorney claims they haven't been recycled.

At this point the judge seems to think that the requirements for a court order had been met.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) compiled this list of 24 legislators overall, and everyone you'd expect made the list.

Made In China McConnell and Pajama Pete Domenici are headliners. As well they should be.

Three are Democrats, which means about 86-87% of the most corrupt elected representatives in Washington are Republicans. Funny, I thought that figure would be higher...They must be trying really hard to behave over there at RNC HQ.
