Tobias Wolff is a contemporary master of short fiction, conjuring a full emotional range within the form's compression. His widely-anthologized stories have received three O. Henry Awards and are collected in Back in the World, In the Garden of the North American Martyrs, The Night in Question, and the recent Our Story Begins.

The protagonists of Wolff's short stories often struggle with moral quandaries, unable to reconcile what they know to be true with what they feel to be true. Wolff explores similarly existential themes in his childhood memoir This Boy's Life and In Pharoah's Army, the story of his reluctant Vietnam service.

While he is best known for his short stories and memoirs, Wolff is also the author of the PEN/Faulkner award-winning novella The Barracks Thief and novels including Old School. He currently teaches creative writing at Stanford University - City Arts and Lectures

Tobias Wolff is the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University, where he directed the creative writing program from 2000 to 2002.

His books include a novel, The Barracks Thief; two memoirs, This Boy's Life and In Pharaoh's Army; and three collections of short stories, most recently The Night in Question. He has also edited several collections of short stories.

His work appears regularly in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper's, and other magazines and literary journals. Among his special interests are American literature, the development of the short story, autobiography, and Chekhov.

Now Nato has come up with a new initiative to try to prevent efforts to find out about its weapons and intelligence. A Tour Of Poor Dayton - Main Street USA

Let's take a trip down Main Street in Dayton, Ohio. The tour last only 10 minutes and through stop lights and pot holes:

There comes boarded up houses, vacant buildings, prostitutes, red light cameras, construction and drifters. Ah, this is my hometown.

No disrespect to my town, but if there were things of interest here plus, tree lined roads and sense of hometown feel, then maybe some of this stuff that occurs currently can disappear.

Still, instead I will direct this message not only to our mayor, but the congressmen who represent our area, the senators who represent our state, the governor, and President Bush. Here's a look at a community hit hard by the loss of jobs, foreclosure, crime and poverty. Think about that when you say the economy is doing well.

Still if the 2008 Presidential candidates come through Ohio, why don't they make Dayton, Ohio their first stop!

Jamiel's Law

Seventeen year old Jamiel Shaw was shot to death on March 2nd by 19 year old Pedro Espinoza. Espinoza was in this country illegally. He was a DREAMer who had been here since he was a child.

Stories like these make me sad on so many levels. Sad because some innocent kid had to die. Sad because it will probably be used as an argument against the DREAM Act, however little sense that makes. Sad because it reminds me of the reason why the DREAM Act is necessary--to keep hopeless kids out of gangs, to get them in school and contibuting to society instead of stepping onto the path of crime and jail and theft and murder.

The elder Shaw and his wife, Anita, urged the council to pass "Jamiel's Law," which has been proposed by a mayoral candidate but has not yet reached the council.
It would require police to work with federal officials "to identify, arrest, prosecute, imprison and deport illegal aliens who are, or appear to be, gang members or affiliate gang members," regardless of whether they have committed any other crimes.

Even though I am sorry for the death of Jamiel, I'm not sure that this law is the best way about to go about it. I may be in the minority, but I think that gang members who have grown up here should be given a chance if they have not committed any other crimes--given the option to join a reformation program, the army, something. After all, their gang affiliation is not the product of their birth country, but of ours, and often of the circumstances they find themselves in. As for those who have committed crimes already, and those gang members who are not DREAMers, of course they should be deported. I hope that is happening already.

However, I would hope that at the same time as something like Jamiel's Law goes into effect, the government and the community would also take steps towards remedying the problems that cause kids to join gangs. The passage of Jamiel's Law should be nationwide and coupled with the DREAM Act, to keep immigrant kids out of gangs, and more funding to groups that improve the community, after school programs, etc.

Here are some organizations that I hope the L.A. city council reaches out to or provides more funding to if (or if not) Jamiel's law is passed:

Clean Slate, a gang recovery program

CROP, a community development program

B.U.I.L.D., a gang prevention program for youth

L.A. Bridges, the city's gang prevention program
