Once a glittering regional capital, modern Naples' reputation has been tarnished by organised crime and soaring unemployment but in this week's programme, Amanda Palmer and the 48 team meet local journalists Andrea and Ilaria, who show them how this brash city is determined to shrug off the forces holding it back.

The most destructive of these forces is the local mafia, The Camorra older and arguably more powerful than Sicily's Cosa Nostra - which operates like a vast corporation controlling Neapolitan business and local politics. But some are willing to challenge their power, as 48 discovers when Andrea takes the team to meet the The "Sott' 'o pont'" (Under the Bridge) theatre company an organisation trying to educate teenagers about the dangers of Camorrista life through drama.

For many, the most vivid image of modern Naples is the 'garbage crisis', which left the city festering in uncollected refuse for nearly a year. We head to the suburb of Villaricca, home to Europe's largest rubbish dump, to meet local percussion band Bidonvillarik. Their musical instruments are built from rubbish to draw attention to the garbage crisis - which, they say, is far from over.

Naples is proud to have maintained its own language, and nowhere is it more alive than in its beloved local folk music, Canzone Napoletana. We meet 12-year-old Fortuna, one of the genre's hugely popular child singers, as she performs to an enraptured crowd at a birthday party in one of the narrow streets of the Forcella district.

The next morning, our guide Ilaria introduces Amanda to 'Pizza Master' Enrico, who runs a training course for local teenagers. His students are keen to learn a respected craft which can earn them a healthy, legitimate wage in a city where high unemployment makes joining the Camorra an all too attractive an option. Amanda learns the secrets of the perfect margherita the precise dimensions and ingredients of which are enshrined in EU law - and attempts to solve the mystery of why pizza making is such a macho career.

Next we take the dramatic coast road around the Bay of Naples towards Amalfi, to visit one of the terraced lemon farms that have characterised the craggy coastal landscape of the Naples region for centuries. Lifelong lemon farmer Luigi reveals the passion for his fruit that keeps him fondly tending his terraces at the age of 74, and introduces us to his protégé, 'Young Luigi'.

Finally, Ilaria and Andrea take us to the village of Montevergine for the annual festival of Tammurriata, a traditional Neapolitan style of music and dance with a huge following among young people. An earthy blend of pagan sensuality and Christian spirituality, the festival celebrates fertility, rebirth, and a successful harvest.

AIDS activist Mechai "Mr. Condom" Viravaidya discusses creative methods for birth control promotion in his native Thailand, developed in order to deal with a 1970s overpopulation crisis.

-----

Mechai Viravaidya, politician and founder of the Population and Community Development Association in Thailand, discusses his innovative techniques for promoting birth control in the face of overpopulation and the AIDS epidemic.

He also talks about his efforts to build economies in rural villages in order to promote health and education. - Chautauqua Institution

Mechai Viravaidya, popularly known as "Mr. Condom" in his native Thailand, was recently awarded the 2007 Gates Award for Global Health on behalf of The Population and Community Development Association (PDA), the organization he founded in 1974. For over 30 years, PDA has helped improve lives and strengthen communities in Thailand through HIV prevention and family planning programs that have become international models. A health economist by training, Viravaidya is best known for his use of humor and unorthodox methods in focusing the public's attention on public health. The programs developed by Viravaidya and PDA led to a dramatic reduction in new HIV infections in Thailand, from 143,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003.

Using a nationwide network of village-based volunteers, PDA empowers women to plan their pregnancies, giving both mothers and children the opportunity to live healthier lives. PDA's comprehensive approach to poverty reduction also addresses income generation, water resource development, sanitation projects, environmental conservation, and promotion of gender equality and democracy.

Today, PDA's 600 employees and more than 12,000 volunteers work in 18 regional development centers and branch offices throughout Thailand. Through its international training program, PDA has trained 2,900 people from 50 countries in innovative approaches to HIV prevention, family planning, adolescent reproductive health and other issues.

With lessons from the Norse of Iron Age Greenland, deforested Easter Island and present-day Montana, Jared Diamond talks about the signs that collapse is near, and how -- if we see it in time -- we can prevent it.

Spoken word...Poetry...Just something to think about.

Be there be or be there not be a god.

Be there a god or not

Can't you see

things would be better if we were all just a little more kind to one another

more caring about one another

less greedy

more giving

were we to have more compassion and empathy for one another

If we were more understanding of our differences

more respectful of each person's individuality

our uniqueness

acknowledging the beauty that is us all

What if we were more respectful

didn't try to do one anothers thinking for them

didn't try to force our will upon one another

How about if we were less fearful of one another

less prejudiced

bigoted

tribalistic

war-some

If we were to be more accepting of one another as one race

the human-race

seeing ourselves truly as One Family

treated each other only as we would want to be treated ourselves

never proceeding to do anything without first asking self

would I want this done to me

If you are me and I am you

how I see you is a reflection on me

how you see me is a reflection on you

the only way to fully love myself is for me to also love you

If I should hurt you

I'm not only hurting you but me too

we're all on this trip together

every single one of us is on the very same blue marble

spinning around through space

if we don't soon learn to live together

it's a damn good chance we gonna all die together

At our own hands

fighting over whose god is greater

religion

dogma

doctrine

tradition

money

position

an assortment of ridiculous things

If we all were to die tomorrow and there's nothing else there-after to ever be experienced

no going to the otherside

no continuation of our energy

no future resurection

no after life

or eternal life

heaven or hell

no devil

no god

for us nothing at all

nothing but nothingness

I'd much rather live the rest of my life loving others for who they are and them loving B for B

striving to do only that which love would do where others are concerned

encouraging my brothers and sisters to do the same

Be there a god or not

If we don't help one another up

quit trying to tear somebody else down

every thing and every body gonna go boom

Yes indeedy Oh Yeah Shonuf Uh Huh Damn Right Do Wa Diddy Ooooo

On the verge of self destruction

Is it really gonna take total inialiation of every single man, woman and child on the face of the earth to rid the planet of the havoc humans have wrought

When it comes to punishment we're such gluttants don't ya think

just can't get enough

come on wake up smell the coffe and drink a few cups

Must we all die for the world to finally be at peace

If any of us should survive the carnage

having not changed our ways

the ones that got us from there to here in the first place

all them that's left gonna do is wind up right here again

what they gonna do then

what's it gonna matter

if all folks are going to do is keep running around in circles

history repeating

the only way off the merry go round

to not doing the same thing over and over again

be there a god or not

either way

love is far better than fear and hate

learn to truly love one another

every body wins

if not

eventually

all of us gon' lose

Ya never know

This time tomorrow we could all be gone

It isn't promised

If the ancients are right

the consensus

12-21-2012 life as we know it will be no more

Be there a god or not

from now until then and hopefully from that day on

put more love in your heart

giving more love away

the more you give

the more you get

each moment

every hour

til the end our our days

be there be or be there not a god

Be just my brothers and sisters

Be just and just be

Let there be peace on earth

and let it begin with me

An attempt to join a meeting of the Council for National Policy is met with resistance. This is the only known video documentation of the CNP - a highly-secretive right-wing organization that meets twice-yearly to discuss conservative movement priorities. In September 2008, the CNP approved the selection of Sarah Palin to run as McCain's VP. The CNP was founded in 1981 by Tim Lahaye.
