He is the author of Benjamin Franklin: An American Life (2003) and of Kissinger: A Biography (1992) and is the coauthor of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made (1986). His biography of Albert Einstein - Einstein: His Life and Universe - was released in April 2007.

The Republicans have already turned to sick sexual innuendo and nonsense about their vice-presidential candidate, pigs, and lipstick in order to distract the public from the real issues in this campaign. One of the items that should be on the top of the list of real issues is Senator McCain’s plans to privatize and cut Social Security.

Senator McCain has repeatedly expressed interest in privatizing Social Security along the lines proposed by President Bush. For those who have forgotten that nightmare, President Bush’s plan would have reduced benefits by approximately 1 percent a year for many workers.

Workers who retire 10 years after the plan is put in place would have seen a 10 percent reduction in benefits compared with the currently projected levels. Workers who retire 20 years after the plan is implemented would see approximately a 20 percent cut in benefits and workers who retire 40 years later would see their benefits cut by close to 40 percent.

Senator McCain did nothing.

Last September, I stood up at NASDAQ and said its time to realize that we are in this together that there is no dividing line between Wall Street and Main Street and warned of a growing loss of trust in our capital markets. Months later, Senator McCain told a newspaper that hed love to give them a solution to the mortgage crisis, but he said I dont know one."

Jason Furman is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution where he is Director of the Hamilton Project. Furman is also a Visiting Scholar at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Previously Furman served as Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy in the Clinton Administration. Furman has been a visiting lecturer at Columbia and Yale Universities. In addition, he served as a Staff Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers, Senior Economic Adviser to the Chief Economist of the World Bank, and Director of Economic Policy for the Kerry-Edwards campaign. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.

Noam Scheiber has been with The New Republic since August, 2000. He holds a master's degree in economics from Oxford University and a B.S. in math from Tulane University. In addition to his work at TNR, Scheiber has written for The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Slate, Salon, The Washington Monthly, the Chicago Tribune, and The Christian Science Monitor. "Senator McCain would not take the steps or achieve the goals that I outlined today. His plan invests very little in renewable sources of energy and he's opposed helping the auto industry re-tool. Like George Bush and Dick Cheney before him, he sees more drilling as the answer to all of our energy problems, and like them, he's found a receptive audience in the very same oil companies that have blocked our progress for so long...

So make no mistake - the oil companies have placed their bet on Senator McCain, and if he wins, they will continue to cash in while our families and our economy suffer and our future is put in jeopardy," Obama stated today, in Lansing, Michigan.

Gas& Oil executives, their family members and their employees are donating fast and furiously to John McCain's campaign.

Greg Sargent of TPM reports:

"It turns out that Hess executives aren't the only ones who gave such huge sums to elect McCain -- generosity towards McCain apparently extends down into lower levels of Hess staff. A lower level employee gave the same, too, and so did her husband, even though he works for Amtrak.

The FEC filings show that Alice Rocchio, who's identified as a Hess office manager, and her husband, Pasquale Rocchio, who's described as an Amtrak "track foreman," each separately donated $28,500 to the RNC-McCain fund, which is called McCain Victory 2008. They gave the money on June 24th, the same day that eight other Hess execs and family members each shelled out the same amount.
