He's been villified at home for meeting the leader of a group, the US calls a terrorist organisation.

However, Jimmy Carter, the former US President, sat down for talks with the political leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal in Damascus.

Carter, who won a Nobel Prize for negotiating peace between Israel and Egypt, holds no official power, but he is an influential voice.

The Arab League's annual summit is taking place in Damascus. But some countries are boycotting the event, accusing Syria of meddling in Lebanese politics. Sir David is joined by Jihad Makdissi, a spokesman for the Syrian Embassy in London, who says the summit is about the Arab people and not Syria. Also in this part of the show, Sir David talks to David Frum, a US political analyst, about John McCain, the Republican candidate in the US elections.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills discusses the letters of Saint Paul, arguing that certain anachronisms in the Apostle's writing have led to undeserved criticism from many modern scholars.

-----

Garry Wills on "What Paul Meant."

Wills sets out to correct St. Paul's longstanding reputation as the man who corrupted Jesus's message. Reminding us that the epistles are older than the gospels and, therefore, more authoritative renderings of Jesus's teachings. Wills describes the early church as more of an outgrowth of Judaism than a radical departure. - Politics and Prose

Garry Wills is an adjunct professor and cultural historian whose many books include penetrating studies of George Washington, Richard Nixon, the Kennedy family, Ronald Reagan, and religion in America. His numerous prizes include the Merle Curti Award of the American Historical Association, the National Book Critics Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and an honorary doctorate from the College of the Holy Cross.

Thank you to everyone who donated to No More Victims for Mother's Day. Through your support we busted through our goal of $29,900 to bring Salee to the United States for treatment. The additional money will be used by No More Victims to help another war-injured Iraqi child receive the medical attention they need.

Ten-year-old Salee was injured on November 7, 2006 while playing outside her home in Hasswa, Iraq with her brother, cousin and some friends. On that day, US jets flew overhead firing three missiles at two passenger vehicles. One of the missiles hit Salee's home, killing her brother and taking both of Salee's legs.

No More Victims has arranged for Salee to receive surgical and prosthetics services in Greenville, South Carolina. This medical treatment is unavailable to her in Iraq.

Salee just left Fallujah and is currently in Damascus, Syria. Her and her father will be meeting with Cole Miller, the founder of No More Victims, in Amman, Jordan in the next couple of weeks. Cole will assist them with the visa process and escort them to South Carolina, where the doctors at Shriner's Hospital will take care of Salee. We will be posting updates on Salee's recovery here, so please come back to follow her progress.
